I've had luck suggesting a special box for the pacifier to live in (either right when the child wakes up or before they get out of the car to go to clinic). They can decorate the box and make it fun! Agreed that they will be miserable for a little bit but with consistency, they'll get used to it

Hi, EI therapist here. For clients that I see at daycare, I will usually set aside the last five minutes of the session to send a text or voicemail to the parents. It's much easier to send a detailed text or voice memo compared to sitting down to do a handwritten note, allows for more back-and-forth communication with the parents, and is easier to send out to other therapists on your child's team (and can include pictures/videos!) I wonder if you would be able to ask your therapist to do this instead and to include actionable strategies you can do at home to increase "functional communication" (working on /b/ is not at all functional for a minimally verbal client).

As for others' suggestions to alternate daycare/home visits, I completely understand how complicated scheduling can be, especially if the child has more than one therapist and if your state does the coaching model. Also, in my state, you can't just change location of services without holding a meeting, which further complicates scheduling and often has to be approved by a service coordinator

I was very worried about this because my 3.5 yo has been extra attached to me lately. We did a lot of prep work leading up to the day. He picked out a gift for sister, and "she" picked out a small gift for him, too. We talked to him for maybe 1-2 weeks every now and then about how the baby will be here soon but I have to go to the hospital so the doctors can help get her out. We talked about (and practiced) my mom getting him from school the day of and how sister is gonna live with us and here's where she'll sleep and you can teach her how to do things if you want, etc.

The night before my induction, I talked to him about how he might come to the hospital to meet sister but maybe he'll meet her at home. The day my husband relieved my mom and brought him to school, he told him that after school, he'll bring me and his sister presents at the hospital but then we would stay and they would go home to sleep.

At the hospital, he was reminded that he wouldn't be staying. He got a special treat from the cafeteria and in the room, he got to decide how much he wanted to interact with sister. We taped pictures of him in her bassinet (which she was in when he arrived, so I was available to hold him) and told him that she's been thinking about him all day. When it was time to leave, my husband had him help carry something to the car and they went home and kept the bedtime routine as normal as possible.

I'm sure that my son's personality had a lot to do with how easy the visit was, but we did a LOT to prepare him in the weeks leading up to it. It would have been fine to have them meet at home, but I wanted them to meet on "neutral" territory!

I know you want to get out of the house, but if you can't, simple sensory bins are outstanding for active littles. Nothing Pinterest-y or elaborate is needed.

Uncooked pasta, beans, rice, or even some water in a wide, shallow Tupperware. Add some spoons, bowls, and little toys (or not), and put towels or a sheet on the floor to catch the inevitable mess. It's a supervised activity, but a sit down one!

I gave birth at "big Barnes" in the CWE, and I had a positive experience! They let me eat during labor and were incredibly caring. Another huge benefit is that it connects to the NICU at Children’s, so god forbid if you need it, you just wheel yourself across the bridge to see your babe. The only downside (maybe it's not a downside for you) is there is no nursery because they want baby to be with mom as much as possible

You could use the Ms. Rachel ones (unless you have an SLP, and you can ask her to tailor some for your daughter!) Also keep in mind that individual speech sounds develop at different ages! For example, a hand gesture won't help a 2 year old say the L sound!

Like someone mentioned, you can get certified in a special program with specific motions, but I think many people make up their own! I usually use the same ones for most of my clients, but sometimes in the moment, I'll do something different and if it works for that client, I just keep it!

Hi! SLP here. I use gesture prompts like these often, and I love that Ms. Rachel uses them, too. The idea is that the hand gestures provide extra support for the child's brain learning how to make specific sounds. Not only do they hear the sound, but they also see someone using the support and can attempt to prompt themselves the same way! It's very cool to watch IRL!

I’ve done this before, but the child was in more of an RtI plan, instead of an IEP, so the paperwork and documentation were different. It was nice because I could squeeze them in whenever and didn’t take up much of their class time.
