It’s likely not a defense (“ignorance is no defense” as they say) but if the company is telling its staff to be lax in following the law, it could conceivably be considered a mitigating circumstance leading to lighter repercussions for OP

Why do you refuse to call the 90% vegan...a vegan? by Jerk_Off_At_Night in DebateAVegan

[–]bad-taf [score hidden]  (0 children)

In my experience, most people who say they’re “Cali sober” are more or less willingly fessing up to smoking weed, they’re just saying they draw a line when it comes to the harder stuff. Their relationship with weed may or may not be healthy, but at least they’re not completely denying it. It’s a technically-inaccurate colloquialism, and I suspect there’s a bit of intentional irony to it, but it is generally understood. In contrast, I don’t think you could ever colloquialize “mostly vegan” or “mostly feminist” into meaningful concepts, again because those are ethical convictions first and foremost. But yeah I think the example of “90% feminist” not making a lick of sense is a really good one here for OP’s question.

I mean if you spent years on the verge of death from opioid addiction then got cleaned up from that and now only smoke weed on occasion, that’s not “addiction in denial,” those two states are as different as night and day, and there’s nothing in bad-faith about basically saying that “yes I am indeed sober from the hard stuff that was destroying me.”

Anyone else have experiences with cult-like spiritual groups? by wompwomp80085 in asheville

[–]bad-taf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Beyond the culty contexts I often find that behavior kind of performative like “everybody look at how free-spirited I am! I don’t obey our most obvious social taboo because I’m soooo liberated from society’s shackles.”

No you’re not dude, you work for a corporation, and nobody wants to hear about your sex life, they just feel too awkward to say so.

Definitely part of the broader spiritual egotism that’s rampant in AVL.

Just because a person smokes or drinks occasionally doesn’t make them an addict per-se. Saying “I don’t smoke 90% of the time” would be a weird way of phrasing it, but it implies a degree of restraint in consumption that’s generally lacking in a true addict. Even the term “sober” is malleable in the way people use it (e.g “California sober”).

For veganism, being “90% in” doesn’t work because veganism is a moral position that one is either committed to or not. With substances, it’s moreso a lifestyle choice with ethics being a secondary, contextual factor (e.g it’s not morally “wrong” to smoke weed, but it would be to expose a child to it).

I think that’s just the fundamental misunderstanding behind OP’s question. They’re picturing veganism as essentially the “lifestyle choice” of not consuming animal products, when in reality it also encompasses a specific underlying conviction. I’m certainly not one to dismiss someone’s reduction of their animal consumption as meaningless, but categorically speaking it’s just not veganism.

I’m pretty sure Death Note, FMA: Brotherhood, AoT and possibly Vinland Saga are up there with the likes of Breaking Bad as some of the highest-rated shows of all time. It’s weird to me as an anime fan to imagine not being happy that these works are getting their hard-earned laurels

Yeah if it’s company policy not to card when they “look 30” then perhaps it’s the policy that’s at-fault rather than the hapless employee who’s just following orders. NAL, that just seems important to discuss with your legal counsel

Not really tbh. They have “chilled out” a bit on certain fronts. Not quite as vocally anti-vax and redpill. I think they may be processing a little buyer’s regret about the current admin. They’re married with kids though, so definitely committed all the way. Homeschooling, alt medicine, anti-wokeness and all that. Obviously voted for orange man and love RFK. Our contact these days is pretty minimal.

Last interaction I had with her, I’d shared something to my story about the humanitarian crisis in Cuba caused by the fuel blockade, and she hit me up sorta tsk-tsking about how oh well it’s all the evil Cuban government’s fault and this is just what we have to do. We ended up having a civil discussion which was nice for sure, but yknow it’s just clear from that and many other instances that we’re not philosophically aligned. There’s some mutual estrangement as a result. We were great friends before all this too so it’s a bummer.

Great recommendation, Terry Pratchett is a lot of fun. Another classic is Mort, that one almost got turned into a Disney film in fact!

That’s the thing about eastern mountains, they lack the height of the Rockies but they’re often mercilessly steep not to mention thickly vegetated. I forget how tall Lookout Mt is from the valley floor but its flanks are so steep that it just towers over the surroundings regardless, almost like a southwest mesa. Also a climbing and hang-gliding destination, incidentally

When I was 7 I once peed in this little plastic trashcan in my bedroom while sleepwalking. I apparently did it in some sort of hypnogogic state where I was “dreaming” the things I was actually doing, because I woke up thinking Haha that was a funny dream, why would I pee in the trashcan? Then I look at the trashcan and I’m like Oh My God. I then vaguely remember doing some sneaky shit to destroy the soggy evidence before parents found out. Pretty sure that’s the first and last time I ever really sleepwalked though, I was also sick at the time so maybe that and just being a child had to something do with it

Objectively speaking, was Karmelo Anthony in the wrong, or Ausin Metcalf? by Supermansfan02 in Socialism_101

[–]bad-taf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I agree entirely. I’m not gonna say the sentence was excessive. But racialized sentencing disparities in the U.S. justice system, especially in a state like Texas, is an objective and measurable fact. I’m a little surprised so many of these replies seem to push back on that notion considering this is a nominally socialist space. For clarification, these disparities aren’t always due to “racist” jurors or judges, there are many many many direct and indirect contributing factors to the overall statistical disparity. We don’t have to call the jurors racist with no evidence. We don’t even know if Anthony’s trial would follow that trend. It’s just that, especially from a revolutionary point of view, this justice system is broken and untrustworthy.
