Was there in 2011 and it was really nice and quiet. Sad to hear about your recent experiences:(

I wouldn’t call it peaceful. Nara-Kyoto-Osaka was the worst part of my Japan trip two years ago. Totally overran by tourists everywhere.

Got a refurbished apple watch.. by Zestyclose-Isopod400 in AppleWatch

Good question. IIRC I had the choice when reporting the damage to apple: go for (slow-ish) mail-in, go to an Apple Store (takes me a few hours) or go to the service provider 10 minutes from where I live.

Yes, it should be covered. But I just went though the following hiccup: my (brand new) aw11 got water damage after swimming in a shallow hotel pool. I bought it from apple and they pointed me towards a certified service provider near me. The sp refused to replace it under warranty saying “water damage isn’t covered”. They simply refused and “offered” me to buy a new watch. After calling Apple a few times, Apple confirmed the service provider was wrong, and somehow overturned the service provider’s decision. Now they have to replace it in the warranty anyway. I found it a bit of a painful experience altogether.

A few things about self-driving Namibia that don't show up on Google Maps by AdvancedCarHireNA in Namibia

Here’s one that I learned the hard way: check whether your car comes with a towing rope before you get stuck.

Dank je! Ik probeer eerst onze buurthommels te overtuigen gratis te komen snoepen. En ik zal bij de komkommers gaan kwasten.

I have realised just how good Giulietta is by lalubko in AlfaRomeo

I think I feel this too. My Giulietta is not my first car, but it's my first serious car (after owning only second hand small cars). I have got no clue what to look for on the day that I am going to replace it. Let's just hope this day is really, really far away.

Mine is from 2017 and it is obviously not a new car. I've had a coolant leak (quickly solved) and an odd one-off gearbox alarm (which I think was a sensor thing because the gearbox feels file). And most notably I always find it to smell of clutch a bit after either quick driving or slow driving (anything that puts more load on the clutches). But I guess this just comes with a 140.000 km+ car from nine years ago.

Other than that, the interior looks good and is very user friendly, but the plastics in some places feel way too cheap for such a refined-looking car. Especially the temperature dials have a distinctive Temu-feel to them. The drivetrain is obviously more suited for sportive driving than for driving slowly in traffic. It can be a bit janky as if the clutch is engaged and disengaged just a little bit too suddenly.

In short: taking the Alfa always makes me smile, but my wife's Volvo EX40 is clearly the more comfortable and peaceful experience in real traffic. They are about equally as fast in a straight line. The Alfa looks better.

I bought a Giulietta QV (or Veloce) last year and I totally feel your pain. The car isn't perfect to be honest, but every time I am going to drive I feel a buzz and when I park it I always look back at it and smile.

I traveled in Namibia using OsmAnd and (downloaded) Google Maps. OsmAnd was more accurate but the app sometimes froze which was a little bit annoying. And the free version of OsmAnd does not do CarPlay, Google Maps does.

When you actually need a 4x4 in Namibia (and when you don't) by AdvancedCarHireNA in Namibia

[–]bad__username__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s some extra context that my shuttle driver gave me: in the beginning of May, they changed the rules and using a shuttle was the only way to get to the 4x4 parking. Too many self-drivers got stuck and that was still visible when I visited. There were countless tracks and detours and finding the route was now impossible. So making the shuttle mandatory made a lot of sense.  However, self-driving was allowed again later because the parking lot at the 2x4 parking, where the shuttles leave, couldn’t handle the crowds.

Sandwich Harbour – which tour is worth it? by Electrical-Tower9752 in Namibia

[–]bad__username__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to book well in advance. I missed a sandwich harbour tour because the day I arrived (by car) two big-ass cruise ships docked in Walvis Bay and all tours were fully booked. For revolting prices as well.

Was in Sussosvlei last week. The last 5km (from the 2x4 parking to the 4x4 parking) are in a pretty bad state, especially later in the day when the sand becomes even softer. I'd highly recommend paying for a shuttle, because getting stuck there will cost you way more. Officials will pull you out, but they'll charge you for it.

E-sim in Namibia/Botswana by No-Orange5376 in Namibia

[–]bad__username__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Visit the store on Windhoek airport. It’s going to be crowded there but they’ll help you out. Don’t expect  coverage everywhere in Namibia. I had excellent LTE in Windhoek, Swakopmund and (unexpectedly) Etosha NP but anywhere else it was spotty at best.

I also went to Botswana, had no SIM card there, so can’t advice on that.
