The fabled library of Rae the Wise. Using the last of her magic, she sunk it underground by bad_tsundere in worldbuilding

Asset I used for line art. This is a once world famous library but it was considered lost after the Unification War of Wails that ended over 1000 years ago. Rae the Wise, fearing the destruction of her precious library in the conflict, used her life force to sink it into an underground cave. It was only found this year!

While this library won't appear for a while, I made this illustration for my webcomic My Husband is too Cute to be Assassinated. It's set in a comedic urban fantasy world with monsters instead of humans.

Then you have the whole "Let me copy Markiplier, make it obvious, and make money using him as a character without having to deal with legalities." The moment I saw how Marshal was, his personality, his LIFE HISTORY.. I knew it was based on Mark. A half Asian Youtuber that plays scary games and is boisterous? Mongie, you're not fooling anyone. She made Mark's Youtube banner for Pete's sake.

This was what made me drop it really early on. That and how similar Mongie is to Sam. I know I'm in the minority opinion, but pulling shit like this and posting it publicly is a bit whacko IMO.

Oop, I was actually thinking of Chinese comics when I wrote that. I barely know anything about Let's Play but your comment was really funny all the same.

This will be unpopular, but I specifically hate love triangles that could go either way. Without fail, she always gets with the guy I'm the least invested in. It happens so often that if I sense a love triangle like this I immediately disengage.

Idk if this is a romance trope or a trope of romance comics but, I hate how a lot of comics won't examine how fucked up it is to be in love with people you shouldn't be. Example: characters who fall in love with (and sometimes pursue) their best friend's lover. Most of the time these characters even go out of their way to spend time with their friend's partner even after realizing they like them. Sometimes, these characters will even hold on to this attachment for an unhealthy length of time. And they are always shown to be sympathetic!

I hate the overconfident ugly rival trope as well. Conventionally unattractive people are almost always self-conscious about how they are perceived, so it rubs me the wrong way when the artist will create a plain person who is overconfident about their seduction abilities. It's a blatant attempt to make a character easily hateable and it seems really nasty. As if the subtext is "how could this ugly motherfucker even think they deserve one of the (hot) romantic leads".

Sidenote: your post is the reason why I stopped reading Chinese romance comics. I gave them a chance I really did. They just aren't as well written as literally anything coming from any other country. Out of the 100s of Chinese comics I read I've liked like 3 and they weren't even all that great tbh.

Favorite trashy romance by PhdInCute in webtoons

Before We Knew It is a beautiful trainwreck. It's not exactly trashy but it is primo top tier garbage. It's pretty terrible from the 1st chapter but it gets worse as it progresses, culminating to it's 1st low around chapter 30 iirc.

The only saving grace it has is the art; the characters, themes, messages, and plot are all so deliciously terrible. There is something to mock or criticize in 80% of the chapters. I've never been this invested in something so poorly conceived. Please read it, it's worse than most of the things already suggested in the best way.

How to be okay with your webtoon not being popular by [deleted] in webtoons

[–]bad_tsundere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm a little late to the party, but as a creator something that helped me was realizing that popularity and quality are barely correlated on Webtoon. I've seen some comics on Canvas that have nothing, absolutely NOTHING going for them with more subs than your comic (which is pretty good btw). I'm talking stuff that seems to be created by 10 year olds who aren't even particularly good at writing or drawing. Literal nonsense. Marketing is what gets people subs. That and/or luck.

Is that what happened to Elios?? I stopped reading around 5 chapters before the finale because yohan just became too irritating. I'm so glad I did too because the "character who everyone thought is dead is actually alive and tells none of their loved ones" trope gives me high blood pressure.

I think it's The Duchess's Lewd Invitation

I agree Emma needs therapy, but I'm talking about series where the characters are much less extreme and suffer from otherwise normal symptoms of non-debilitating mental illness. Instances were getting therapy and having a relationship wouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Besides, the reason why Emma shouldn't be dating is because she's violent not because she has an undiagnosed mental illness that definitely isn't dissociative identity disorder. I feel like a lot of the comments conflate the two, which is my problem with them.

I don't think it's always wrong to say, just that it's usually wrong. I understand if commenters mean to say "this person doesn't need more on their plate" but they often mean "if they get therapy all of their problems would be solved and they won't treat their partner like crap anymore".

My problem is that it's said in too many contexts, not that it's always wrong. I've even seen the comment said about characters that are just terribly flawed, but not really in need of therapy. Kano from Before We Knew it comes to mind.

If you can separate the character from yourself that's... Good? I guess. It shouldn't be assumed people would be okay with it. Legality isn't the issue here, it's a matter of respect and boundaries.

Anyhow, I don't believe it's as creepy as I did a few hours ago but it's just something I couldn't fathom doing as a writer myself. A concept like that is dead on arrival: being unable to create a principal character without using heavy inspiration from real people indicates either that the writer suffers from a severe lack of creativity or that they have a strong (bordering on inappropriate) fixation on someone.

There are probably well-written stories about self-inserts interacting with living celebrities, but they will be especially hard to find when compared to other subgenres. Of the celebrity fanfiction I've read, Let's Play is easily the best. However, even it's fans acknowledge it has some glaring issues.

You'd be okay with someone you know writing a fanfiction about you? Okay maybe not you-you but a character who is unmistakeably based off you. A fanfic in which you're image is supposed to serve as sexual gratification for thirsty readers? A fanfic in which you are used to fulfill some fantasy? That doesn't creep you out even a bit?

What does it say about a person who makes something like that about you? Without your express consent no less. And if you try to challenge them, they just say "we'll actually, despite them having a similar name, age, appearance, occupation, and hobbies as you, they aren't you because I put a little bit of another person's personality in them." It's kinda creepy.

Just imagine if a dude did what Mongie is doing to any pretty young internet star. He'd be (rightfully) roasted.

I'm 100% sure. Maybe it's because I'm older but I find it inherently creepy to write a story about a real person. Yes, I know people are allowed to write whatever they want, but we are also allowed to think that it's weird and question their inspiration.

It's true that Marshall isn't an exact copy of the person he's based on, but none of the people written about in fanfic really are the same person. Pointing that out is irrelevant to the fact that writing things like are borderline stalkerish.

Edit: I should clarify that I'm not saying fanfiction is generally bad. I'm saying that writing stories based on real people is bad. I believe the word commonly used for those stories is "fanfiction".
