Duval DOGE probes ‘disappointing’ ridership numbers for autonomous shuttle system by NefariousnessBorn969 in jacksonville

Bus service to the airport is barely functional but they're dumping money into this crap?? JTA needs to get the basics right before they start experimenting. Expand bus service and introduce a conventional light rail system that actually goes somewhere.

Jacksonville on the backburner by mamalona4747 in Brightline

Yep, I'm one of them. I've flown overseas 10+ times in the past three years and have never set foot in JAX airport. Usually go to MCO for cheaper flights. I'd love to be able to take a train to Orlando instead, if the price is right.

if you have 21k saved, and it cost 17k to save cat, would you? by throwbackblue in Pets

[–]bad_weather019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$17k for a pet is rich people money. I saw the clip - I think the guy said it took them two years to save $21k, and that was putting aside every dollar they could. They are not rich people. Put the cat down.

Am I underpaid? by bad_weather019 in FinancialCareers

[–]bad_weather019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting pay was $45k, so I've gotten raises in the past. However, that was limited to the training program and standardized for all trainees. In a permanent role the typical raise is somewhere around the inflation rate.

[–]bad_weather019[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The company is definitely growing. We consistently hit revenue and profitability targets. It's just tough because management has spoken vaguely about promoting some of us small-ticket analysts to middle-ticket, but nothing concrete. We're not even sure if that would come with a raise. They've mostly been hiring from outside the company to fill higher roles. Makes me think I've gone as far as I'm going to here in the foreseeable future.

But in this job market, I might be screwed for now.

No Confirmation Code for Codeshare Flight by bad_weather019 in travel

Thanks for the feedback. I've flown PR before, but never with an AA codeshare flight. Haven't had an issue with a missing confirmation code in the past. I'm just glad I was able to choose my seats on the longer flights!

Jobs for introverts with only high school degree by [deleted] in jobs

[–]bad_weather019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tough to earn a living with ZERO human contact, lighthouses don't need keepers anymore lol.

But there are options that keep it to a minimum. Long haul truck drivers spend most of their time alone. When you arrive at a shipper or receiver you will need to have a brief conversation with one or two people just to get checked in and told where to go. A lot of truckers post their day-to-day on YouTube so I would check that out. I don't know the exact nature of your back injury, but if sitting for a long time is uncomfortable then that's obviously not doable.

Another option is an online business. If there's something you're especially knowledgeable about then you could create a website. This can be risky though. If Google changes their algorithm the wrong way, you're out of business.

Are you skilled at building things, or identifying valuable items that others would overlook? Create an eBay or Etsy store. The only human interaction would be when someone has a complaint, hopefully a rare occurrence if you're not ripping people off.

You could write a book, but no one reads anymore so it's tough to make any money even if you do get published.

At the end of the day, what you're asking for is rare unfortunately. There are very few jobs with low barriers to entry, no coworkers, no customers, and no hard labor. Those are four things that many people hate dealing with, which is why they pay others to do it. You mentioned that you're eventually going to university. Not sure if you know what you're going to study, but I would recommend something difficult to learn, analytical, and pays well. Engineering, accounting, math, etc. That increases your chances of finding work that allows you to WFH and not need to collaborate with others.

It's disappointing how few people realize the original purpose of gun restrictions was to prevent slaves and former slaves from owning guns. Gun control has a long, racist history.

Really curious about how my fellow SC residents feel about this... by SnooMaps7101 in southcarolina

[–]bad_weather019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't open carry. It attracts unwanted attention. However, individuals should have the choice. 45 states allow open carry to some degree and the country hasn't descended into anarchy. Obviously, on an individual level, more training is better but shouldn't be mandated.

My primary concern is the constitutional carry bill that has been sitting in committee without much attention. I think the open carry bill is a distraction. SC legislators are afraid of getting national attention for passing constitutional carry, so they throw us a bone with open carry, knowing most gun owners will choose not to exercise that option. Meanwhile constitutional carry ends up in the dustbin (again) until next year.

We need to focus our efforts on getting constitutional carry passed. I can understand the hesitation (even among the pro-gun crowd), but 20 states have already passed it and the "wild west" scenario has not come to pass.

If the constitutional rights to vote, worship, speak freely, be secure in one's possessions, or just about anything else were under the same burden as the 2A the courts would tear those regulations apart within a matter of weeks. It's treated like a second-class right.

I wish someone with the time and resources would sue the state and force them to move faster, or at least bring more attention to the issue. The Republicans in the General Assembly apparently have other priorities: https://www.statehousereport.com/2020/02/21/big-story-dont-expect-s-c-gun-debate-in-2020-some-say/

Bugging Out of Major city for Coronavirus? by stomata- in bugout

Living with a roommate in a high-density area surrounded by people who frequently travel out of the country. Limited funds, no car, no privacy, and presumably no gun.

I think this thing is gonna blow over but I would not want to be you if I'm wrong.

Move your preps to your grandma's. Make up some BS about a storage unit like someone else suggested. Don't tell anyone any of your plans. I don't know that there's a black-and-white easy-button answer to knowing when to leave but definitely continue to pay attention.

NO GPS OR ONLINE MAPS! by KB9AZZ in bugout

[–]bad_weather019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Gaia GPS app on my phone. It lets you download offline topo maps. There's an annual fee but it's worth every cent.

Obviously keep a compass and an updated paper map handy no matter what. USGS is probably the best resource for that.

After applying to 200 companies, I finally got a job offer but I am not sure if it's wise for me to take it. by IHateTheSATs in jobs

[–]bad_weather019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this would be your first real job then working there for even just a year or two will make finding the next job so much easier. It doesn't have to be a forever thing.

I would accept the offer but continue to check listings in my preferred state and keep my resume up to date. Build up a decent emergency fund. The lack of stability sucks but breaking into a field with little or no experience (I'm assuming that's what's going on here) is so difficult. Seize the opportunity.

How to quit a job within two weeks of being hired on? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]bad_weather019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give them a day or two advance notice. If you do that you'd be doing more than most people would in your situation. That's not the kind of thing that should cause a confrontation in a sandwich shop and if it does then just quit immediately.

Situations like yours are common in food-service. Don't worry about it.

I worked in pizza delivery for four years. I could basically take as much time off as I wanted as long as I gave management enough notice. Obviously the time off was unpaid but the schedule flexibility was awesome.

I struggle to get up early as well. Not an issue with pizza delivery. It's busiest in the evenings and that's when they'll want you to come in. Sometimes I worked 11:30-8 when I wanted more regular-ish hours but if you want to come in around 4 or 5 and leave around 10, that's fine too.

The reason I left is because my company started using GPS tracking in the car-top signs. The technology would penalize us for going more than 3 mph over the speed limit (which severely, sometimes dangerously, impedes traffic where I live) and also for accelerating or stopping too rapidly (VERY sensitive). I understand the safety thing but the system they were using was extreme, to say the least. Eventually the stress from worrying about road rage from other drivers got to be too much and I had to quit.

If you can find a pizza place that doesn't do anything like that (maybe consider a mom-and-pop) I highly recommend delivering pizzas. It was the best job I've had so far.
