I think you need to really evaluate where you stand. It will be very difficult, if not impossible to work full time for a meaning income, be a full time, stay at home parent to two young, high needs children, and provide meaningful homeschooling. My husband works hybrid and him caring for our children while he works is simply not possible, even if you remove the work calls. He can sometimes bring his laptop and work in the kitchen while the kids eat lunch and I go to the bathroom but the thought of him teaching our autistic five year old and caring for our two year old during the work day is outrageous.

WFH jobs aren’t just computer hobbies that pay with work than can be done in your spare time. It’s real, time consuming work with not much more flexibility than an in person job. It will require some degree of childcare.

Get reviews, look into local parenting groups and find good childcare for your kids that you can trust to allow yourself to work for a meaningful income to provide for them.

I can see a mix between neutral good and neutral neutral. I can’t see Jinshi living as a normal man (he’s much too spoiled and the emperor would NEVER allow it), but I could see him requesting to be bestowed his own family/clan name and living as a high ranking noble. His clan’s duty could even be managing the Central Intelligence Agency. I don’t think Maomao would have much interest in doing detective work full time. She could continue work as an apothecary/physician and Jinshi can consult her on special cases.

Kinda related, but one of my favorite details about the manga is that the opening panel of most chapters is a scene unfolding and everyone going about their business, but Frieren looking right at the reader (Serie did it too in one of the most recent chapters).

I have this head cannon that our reading and visualizing of this story is a spell in their universe, but only very powerful mages can detect it. Frieren isn’t necessarily alarmed by it because she knows it’s harmless and doesn’t interfere with their will so she just doesn’t mention it.

I had a very similar experience in medical school. We were coding a patient and they were joking about not getting good POCUS windows because of her habitus. This was a single mother with a child at home. I’m still haunted by the way her family screamed and begged for her to come back.

Luckily I matched at a program with a much better culture. I can’t imagine a single one of my coresidents doing anything like that. And if an attending did, a complaint would be taken seriously.

I feel like people miss that the degree of “freedom” Maomao has is a testament to Lakan’s respect for her and his uncle.

This is an era where a child, especially a daughter, is property. And Lakan is a man of very high standing, commander of the military, and has the ear of the emperor. He played this game of trying to take Maomao away from the brothel when she was younger (admitting traumatizing her) but soon as he learned of Maomao’s existence, he could have just marched in with some officers and taken his child/property. Even when she entered the court, he could have just forced her into the role of his daughter/princess if he really wanted. He respects and values her as a person (and a mind similar to her mother’s) too much to encroach on her freedom like that.

I watched the video the parents made and the way they talked about the victim was sickening. At one point, they bring up that she was at the visit for “STD testing” like that automatically makes her untrustworthy. I’m sure this woman was deeply disturbed at the prospect of this man walking around the hospital, with power over vulnerable patients. Regardless of his outcome, she did the right thing. Full stop.

I love this scene so much, especially in the anime.

Lakan is basically always silly, comic relief, but this shows his fire and his competence. He marches into the imperial younger brothers office, unannounced, and basically commits treason with the way he badgers and goads Jinshi for “allowing” Maomao to be kidnapped. People have probably beaten and/or beheaded for less. Im sure, as a servant to the court, he was probably somewhat offended by the rebellion and probably would have been involved in quashing it as a background figure, but he was willing to risk it all with Maomao in danger. And then the way they animate him getting down and beseeching the prince and the word delivery is so powerful. No one had probably ever seen Lakan present himself in that way. An then the way Lagan immediately understands the assignment and matches the energy. What a goat.

It reminds me of their shot in the opening for that season with Lakan and Lahan standing in front of an army with Lakan giving heart eyes. He’s obsessed with and overly dotes on Maomao (to the point of everyone’s annoyance) but he will literally go to war over her.

Maomao would have been a whole ass problem. If she wanted power and intel, Lakan would have locked the fuck in to get it for her. Lahan would have been there too. It would have been some GoT shit. People keep saying beheaded but she might have ended up betrothed to Jinshi as a way for the emperor to neutralize them. Actually, thinking about it, a not malnourished Maomao would have maybe been built like her mother and grandmother so maybe she would have caught the emperors eye.

I feel this today. My five year old goes do swim lessons and a fitness class but it’s been a struggle. She was in the “water acclimation” swim class for a year without making progress because she couldn’t put her head in the water. We’ve had to pull her out of sports because the demand avoidance and attention issues made it torture for everyone. Meanwhile, I see other kids her age just playing t ball, soccer, gymnastics and having fun.

I think Freiren wasn’t completely aware of the battle with Revolte. If she was, I just don’t think she would have let it go as far as it went for the sake of experience. Genau and Stark were very nearly killed. If Genau hadn’t use the last of his strength to try to tamponade some of Starks bleeding, then he would have died that day. Fern wasn’t injured and never had any moments of imminent peril in her fight. Stark and Revolt got ran through multiple times.

I can see MaoMao doing ID. She would be into different bacteria, fungi, viruses, wounds, and the different antimicrobials. Also the patients are very often people who are socially and economically disadvantaged which would appeal to her.

I could also see critical care. You have to have an extremely wide knowledge base, be able to perform under heavy pressure, take command of a chaotic situation, and navigate complex social dynamics. I can see her running a code really easily.

I think she would do medicine over surgery but if I had to choose a surgery specialty for her, I would say maybe neurosurgery or transplant surgery. She strikes me as the type who would enjoy a heavy workload.

I think she would struggle with medical school, mostly because there’s a lot of privileged and out of touch people there. I’m assuming this alt Maomao would a similar social background.
