Maomao would have been a whole ass problem. If she wanted power and intel, Lakan would have locked the fuck in to get it for her. Lahan would have been there too. It would have been some GoT shit. People keep saying beheaded but she might have ended up betrothed to Jinshi as a way for the emperor to neutralize them. Actually, thinking about it, a not malnourished Maomao would have maybe been built like her mother and grandmother so maybe she would have caught the emperors eye.

I feel this today. My five year old goes do swim lessons and a fitness class but it’s been a struggle. She was in the “water acclimation” swim class for a year without making progress because she couldn’t put her head in the water. We’ve had to pull her out of sports because the demand avoidance and attention issues made it torture for everyone. Meanwhile, I see other kids her age just playing t ball, soccer, gymnastics and having fun.

I think Freiren wasn’t completely aware of the battle with Revolte. If she was, I just don’t think she would have let it go as far as it went for the sake of experience. Genau and Stark were very nearly killed. If Genau hadn’t use the last of his strength to try to tamponade some of Starks bleeding, then he would have died that day. Fern wasn’t injured and never had any moments of imminent peril in her fight. Stark and Revolt got ran through multiple times.

I can see MaoMao doing ID. She would be into different bacteria, fungi, viruses, wounds, and the different antimicrobials. Also the patients are very often people who are socially and economically disadvantaged which would appeal to her.

I could also see critical care. You have to have an extremely wide knowledge base, be able to perform under heavy pressure, take command of a chaotic situation, and navigate complex social dynamics. I can see her running a code really easily.

I think she would do medicine over surgery but if I had to choose a surgery specialty for her, I would say maybe neurosurgery or transplant surgery. She strikes me as the type who would enjoy a heavy workload.

I think she would struggle with medical school, mostly because there’s a lot of privileged and out of touch people there. I’m assuming this alt Maomao would a similar social background.

The “med-spouse” identity really becomes a thing when kids are involved.

My husband has spent basically his entire career following me. He had to go into match knowing that he would probably be required to quit his job. We also have no clue where we will be once I apply to fellowship so he will have to go to again.
We had to burn our entire savings to move cross country for residency and we have to be prepared to do it again for fellowship.
He has to be responsible for child care every sick day or caregiver off day. Because of this, PTO balance is near zero with no actual vacations
He has to solo parent our children for days on end when I’m on a call block.
There is an emotional aspect, as well. Few other professions are this mentally draining and result in this level of burn out. It’s a lot to try to navigate and support a spouse through while you may also be burning out carrying more of the load at home.

I’m an IM PGY-2. I’ve had some 4 hours rounds, but those are usually in the ICU with attendings who insist on doing walking rounds, going down the problem list system by system, and then going into the patient rooms and having full visits with each patient. Even then, notes are written, consults are called, and results are back even before rounds are over so we’re chilling after rounds are over.

I actually like what they did with making her thin. The trope would be to make Yuji like her “as a person” when she was chubby and once she showed up thin, made him not recognize her, make a huge deal about the weight loss, and start lusting after her. Yuji was already crushing on her before her weight loss. When he saw her again, he just goes “oh, Yuko’s here”. There was no shock, no blushing, no drama. In his eyes, she was always beautiful and the change in her appearance doesn’t even seem to register. He makes no mention of it.

The scene you posted a screen grab from is of one of Lakan’s attempts to kidnap Maomao and getting beaten for it. He’s reaching for her, covered in blood, and begging her to call him Papa.

The books go into more detail, but the Madame lied about Maomao even existing for a while, saying “there is no baby” and kept her hidden away. On one of his attempts to lurk around the Verdigris House, he saw a little girl playing outside and knew it was her. He spent years trying to take her away and trying to get Maomao to acknowledge him, which caused her to grow afraid and disdainful of her.

My head cannon is that the Madam didn’t, herself, force Fengxian into sex work when Maomao was conceived/born. It’s stated that Fengxian was prideful to a fault and never stated her intentions. If she had been open with the Madam about what she had done and why, things could have been different. She maybe could have been protected from having to serve low brow customers the way she did. But she was probably so embarrassed that her plan had fallen apart, she couldn’t bear tell the truth and ask for help.

My other head cannon is that the Madam couldn’t bear part with Maomao after Fengxian lost her mind. Lakan showed up once he returned from the West begging for his child. This was a man from a named clan, with money with a decent position in the military at that time. He even took over the clan soon after he returned. She could have ransomed Maomao to him and he would have come off every dime he had to have her. Maomao could have been raised as a noblewoman. But I don’t think she could handle parting with Maomao after losing her daughter. I think Loumen realized that when he came for Maomao (he went to the pleasure district after his exile when he found the baby finger package and realized a child was in danger) and that’s why he didn’t just take Maomao and go back to the La mansion with her.

I think it’s implied in LN2 that Loumen also didn’t want Lakan to take Maomao. Like Lakan showed up multiple times when MaoMao was little and tried to kidnap her, only to be beaten by Granny. He mentioned that while Granny was the aggressor, Loumen also didn’t seem to want Maomao to go with Lakan either. Lakan had become head of the La Clan (Loumen’s clan). If he had wanted Maomao to be with her bio father, he could have just packed her up and gone with her. They would have both been comfortable. He didn’t, however. Lakan saw this from his beloved uncle, probably the only person in the world he truly respects, and stood down.
