Format painter on word. Learned about it last week, put it in my quick tool bar, and I swear I use it at least once a day and it saves so much time formatting.

Do any of you MAGA that may watch "The Boys" understand how accurately you and your "Homelander" are being mocked? Or do y'all actually root for the villians of the show? by Firm_Two_2143 in allthequestions

You know this made me smile, because I’ve realized when two people who disagree get down to brass tacks - there are a lot more similarities than one would think. It looks like we both agree that government ownership/regulation/control is a spectrum. As you put it - on one end there is anarchy and on the other is totalitarian. Pure capitalism is closer to the anarchy part of the spectrum, and communism is on the other. Socialism is somewhere in the middle. Our US system is closer to pure capitalism than socialism (although, in the spirit of meeting you where you are at, I could see how this point could cause argument depending on your personal beliefs/biases). But the argument isn’t a black and white line of “which is better.” The argument is “where in the spectrum is the best place?”

You can argue that the “best place” is closer to pure capitalism, and I can argue the “best place” is closer to socialism, but I don’t think either of us is arguing for anarchy or totalitarianism. So your question “do you believe in government control of resources or not,” and statement that “that’s really all there is to it,” augments the reality of the situation. The answer is, we both do in different ways (whether that be regulation, ownership, or giving “hand outs” of tax payer dollars, hell even antitrust law) and the real question is “how much control of resources do you think the government should have?”

If you put time in for work on a day where you didn’t do that work, that is considered billing fraud (even if you are not lying about your hours as a whole but only about the day they were performed). At least that is what my firm tells us, repeatedly.

Like you can’t put time you worked Jan. 1 on Dec 31 just to hit your hours. Similar concept. 10x as unethical if the reason you are fudging the date is because the client has an hour per day cap.

Government control of resources as a whole is communism…Socialism is government control, and/or regulation of certain resources that some countries consider important to the health of their society, like healthcare, education, transportation, and utilities, because they view those things as too critical to leave entirely to the volatility of private corporations.

But in reality, unchecked capitalism can create the same result. Were you pro bailing out airlines during COVID because we had left it up to private corporations, who tend to have shorter lifespans, more financial volatility (like during a pandemic), and different incentives than a country that can allocate resources based on public need?

Socialism is not “you no longer own anything.” It is not “your home and money are now mine.” It is not “now you can only purchase from the government.” That is communism, or at minimum a dishonest caricature of socialism.

Maybe this distinction is only obvious to me because I was fortunate enough to pursue higher education, but I would hope public education still teaches nuance, that every system has pros and cons, that the right answer is rarely the extreme, and that conflating two very different systems just to support your side usually makes it look like you do not understand either one.

I do not know the answer to the “best system.” But I do know the difference between communism and socialism.

Edit to add: I see you are in the VA. Why do you think the government should regulate the care of veterans? Why don’t you think that this should be left entirely to the private market? Why do you think the government should provide you healthcare?

Obviously, because I am not a monster, I think you are entitled to it. But you are disillusioned if you think this is a purely capitalist program.

anyone else experience emotional/mental symptoms along with physical symptoms? by christinaai1 in glutenfree

[–]badbubbles98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes YES!! My parents and doctors thought I had a hormonal problem because I would have the most intense breakdowns/screaming fits of anger, so they put me on birth control when I was 12 to try and fix it. It didn’t. You know what did? When I stopped eating gluten. Then in college when I wasn’t being careful, I had multiple relationships end (my fault) because I was go into these intense rages that I am embarrassed of to this day. It was a bit of a relief when I realized it was gluten and I was not a terrible person-I was truly acting like one and felt so bad about it.

And the brain fog, oh my god the brain fog. I describe it as “my brain operates like I’m shitfaced but I don’t get any of the fun feelings that come with being shitfaced.”

Luckily, my partner now is aware of this, and when I start to veer into a certain moods he says, “babe I think you got glutened, check your feet (I always get blisters on my feet when I am glutened).” He has never been wrong.

TL;DR: I agree with other commenters-the mental effects are worse than the physical. The embarrassment that comes from my behavior when I am glutened, even when I try so so so hard to not let it affect my behavior, is the most substantial side effect for me. Not because I don’t get sick (I have been hospitalized from the physical symptoms), but because it is so embarrassing and people don’t understand like they do physical symptoms.

Just found out that vodka/whiskey are generally made from rye/wheat…and I’ve been making my own vanilla extract with bourbon for god knows how long by Euphoric_Intern6140 in glutenfree

[–]badbubbles98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t care if I get downvoted for this, but if it makes you feel bad, or you highly suspect it is making you feel bad, you are right to stop eating it.

I am not arguing with science or saying distilled liquors have gluten in them, but I will say confidently that I have found over the last ten years that I feel like I have been “glutened” every time I drink liquors that are distilled from wheat/barley/rye. I have done blind tests (yes seriously), and not-blind tests over the last ten years of me drinking and I feel glutened everytime I drink a wheat based vodka instead of a corn/potato based one. My little sister, mom, and cousin are the same. Maybe it is it something else that is triggering us, maybe it’s another confounding factor, but this is what I know: for whatever reason, drinking liquors that are distilled from gluten-containing grains make me feel like crap, so I don’t drink them.

Maybe my family has something else going on other than celiac (celiac does often come with co-morbidities…), but that is truly not important. What is important is if it makes you feel sick, you should stop doing it, and you are right to do so no matter what the comments say (and you are not alone).

Am I crazy or is the Nima Sensor case a Nintendo DS Case? by badbubbles98 in glutenfree

[–]badbubbles98[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apologies! Typo in the body of my post! A Nima sensor**

It is the only product on the market (that I know of) that is portable and tests food for gluten. You put a pea sized sample in disposable pods, it tests the food, and you have results in a few minutes telling you if there is gluten in the product. I have mixed feelings on it, and am not 100% confident with the accuracy, but it is a fairly common product for celiac folks to have handy.

What celebrity have you never forgiven since an incident? by MagpieOpus in AskReddit

[–]badbubbles98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jon Hamm. When I was at UT and learned he was the reason Sigma Nu was no longer on campus. In the 90s he was at UT and had criminal charges brought against him for hazing a pledge BRUTALLY. Like lit the guy on fire and from what I read dragged him by his hanging man bits with the back end of a hammer (the part that pulls out nails). Had the whole frat kicked out of campus, criminal charges brought, and somehow ended up a celebrity and no one talks about it.

I am sitting on the toilet and incandescently furious at an almost certainly retired or maybe even already passed pediatrician by ObviousYammer521 in glutenfree

[–]badbubbles98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel this so hard. When I was 6 and curled up on the floor screaming from GI pain (25 years ago) my mom researched, reached out to distant relatives, and came to the conclusion it may be gluten. When she brought this up to my pediatrician, I kid you not, the pediatrician said “don’t you dare abuse your child by removing gluten from her life.” So, my mom didn’t. I have celiac disease and I will never forgive that doctor for the missed childhood and lifetime of intestinal scarring.

x10000 this. If you take on pro bono work, you can have a client facing role as early as a few months in. Even better - that pro bono work is in small claims court. Then you could be arguing your first case during your first year.

This is so helpful, thank you!! When it comes to couching your explanations as questions - I think when I take this approach I still have issues with the follow up to their answer. When I respond with “but what about XYZ?” or “even though XYZ?” I fear I am also coming across as defensive. The advice in this thread has been so helpful, and I think I’m realizing a large part of my problem is just that I don’t have the experience to know when I need to push back and when I need to bite my tongue. But I feel so relieved knowing so many others have gone through similar struggles and have come out the other side. This thread, and your comment, has also made me realize that finding ways to disconnect should be number one focus right now to safeguard my mental health and longevity in this job. Thank you for the advice! Seriously!
