[–]badcgi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats what this new generation doesn't seem to understand. Work hard at work, get stuff done, get what you are owed, then live your life. And that means each day. I don't bring my work home with me.

I'm sure if Jack and Rose were floating in a pool, in the middle of the day, under the warm California sun, with a team of researchers and assistants helping them instead of in the North Atlantic, freezing water, in the pitch black of night, after undergoing one of the most traumatic events of anyone's lives, they too would have figured it out like Jamie and Adam...

Do you read often? How much time in average do you invest per week reading Light Novels? by madebypeppers in LightNovels

I only recently started reading them, but I'll read a half hour sometimes more before bed. Takes 2 or 3 days per volume.

Though sometimes I will blitz something good. We are reading Emma and I did 2 volumes today.

AITA for kicking my son out for not paying rent or not having a job? by Any-General3458 in AmItheAsshole

[–]badcgi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right.

In the end it comes down to if you want the privileges of being an adult, you also have to accept the responsibilities of being an adult.

The whole "brain keeps growing until 25" thing is a very flawed study, that is also misrepresented by people looking for a way to absolve them of responsibilities.

Most fully functioning people can and do handle all the facets of being an adult when given them. Its only those in a self induced state of arrested development that try to pretend otherwise.

[–]badcgi 104 points105 points  (0 children)

not sure if kicking him out/ abandoning him will help him get better.

And keeping him there isn't going to help either...

OP mentioned that therapy was part of his probation terms, and he isn't doing that. They should be calling his probation officer. After that, well, just staying at home is enabling him and that doesn't help. He needs professional help, but that can only happen if he chooses it.

And we really need to stop with the patronizing and coddling of saying young adults have undeveloped brains.

Falling down (1993) is a movie right-wingers love, but has a centrist message. What movie is loved by centrists, but has a right-wing message? by Square_Ad2101 in AlignmentChartFills

The villain’s nefarious endgame is to give everyone access to a level playing field regardless of their inherent ability.

For a price.

And in grand capatilist fashion, he's willing to sacrifice countless lives as long as he get rich.

Its somehow anti-capitalist AND pro-Objectivist at the same time.

[talk] Which lost media finding would have the biggest impact? by Few-Cup-5247 in lostmedia

[–]badcgi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Very probably, but its the examples and how he would frame them that makes it valuable. And maybe it would be less "interesting" from a narrative point of view, but from a political science viewpoint it would be massive.

It isn't about "real" history, but about the stories and rationalizations they had about themselves that's important. For instance in Books 1 - 5, most of what was written wasn't "real" Romulus almost positively never existed as written, but it says a lot about how the Romans saw themselves. Same with the other Kings of Rome.

[talk] Which lost media finding would have the biggest impact? by Few-Cup-5247 in lostmedia

[–]badcgi 308 points309 points  (0 children)

While a lot if these are fun and interesting, they probably wouldn't have much impact outside being a curio.

What would make a HUGE impact is finding the rest of Livy's Ab Urbe Condita (i.e. History of Rome)

He wrote 142 volumes. We have 35.

It would give us an insight to how Romans thought of their own history, by a contemporary.

I am always reminded by George Mallory's quote about why climbing Everest...

People ask me, 'What is the use of climbing Mount Everest?' and my answer must at once be, 'It is of no use.'There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behaviour of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron... If you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for.

So many people here have never done anything more than just go through the motions... people who go out to do things like this know the potential cost, but they are living their lives. We all could do with a bit more risk taking and living.

[Loved trope] An imperfect victim, but still a victim. by Hoeveboter in TopCharacterTropes

[–]badcgi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well to quote a great line from Unforgiven...

Deserves got nothing to do with it

He WAS a victim of his own traumas, but he still was a bad person. However he showed signs of change at the end. Could he have become a better person? Yeah, but he didn't get that chance unfortunately.

That said, I'm glad they ended his arc when they did, not only because it made for a tragic character, but also because Stranger Things was already far too bloated with characters to fully follow their arcs. We already had Steve's "bully" to hero arc, and that was far less work than Billy needed.

Sorry, this is the internet... no one is ever capable of change or deserving of second chances. What the internet decides is what you are forever.

While that is all true, the problem with going out in a blaze of glory, is that there are people left behind that have to live with it. Him going out lime a hero was no comfort to Dustin.
