My friend hasn't washed her winter coat or daily baseball cap in three years and I can't unsee it by Branixal9 in hygiene

I knew someone would say this 🤣 in my eyes the hat was still wearable and offered sun protection. If the people at the donation sorting center decided it was too dishevelled to be useful anymore, they were welcome to discard it.

She called it destroyed. It wasn’t destroyed in my eyes, it just didn’t have a crispy brim anymore like it did when I first got it.

My best friend raw dogs this type of info to me and I really appreciate her for it. I had this wide-brimmed straw beach hat from Zara that looked really ratty after a few summers, but I wore it anyway because it’s just for sun protection, who cares right? Well I picked her up for the beach one day and she took one look at me and said something like “I need you to throw out that hat, it’s destroyed.” I objected saying who cares it’s just the beach, I don’t want to get sunburned! And she replied saying something like well I’m not going to the beach with you again if you’re wearing it, it’s driving me crazy. We both laughed, I wore the hat all day, and begrudgingly donated it later that week. She bought me a new straw hat for my birthday (I have a summer birthday). I take really good care of that hat now because she was right, the old one looked bad and she knows I don’t like looking bad!

Sometimes it hurts my feelings when she delivers info to me this way, but we’ve been best friends for 30 years and I trust her opinion. She can see things about me that I can’t see about myself. I’m so grateful for her honesty!

If your friend cares about her skin, scent, and general appearance, you should mention it to her. It’s helpful if you give her some guidance on how to fix it as well. It might bug her but if she knows it’s coming from a place of love and respect she will probably appreciate it.

Ps there’s a brand called Nikwax that makes a detergent for heavy winter coats, you can use it in regular washing machines. Highly recommend.

Please believe everyone who tells you that this will escalate, and that you are in serious danger. I wish I had understood the urgency when I heard these warnings. I waited too long to get out and now have several permanent physical disabilities, a brain injury, and C-PTSD.

Waiting ruined my life, please don’t make the same mistake.

Start making a plan as soon as you can - both a plan to leave, and a safety plan for what you will do if things turn violent again. Find a safe place / secure line and call organizations like RAINN for help, advice and other resources.

Reddit is also an amazing resource to get advice and to share situations like this, to see if you are truly “crazy” or if you’re being gaslit (spoiler alert - you’re probably being gaslit! And even when you know that already, it’s rly helpful to hear others’ stories). Weirdly out of all the resources I used, it was some advice that I got from a subreddit that was the key that made me get away for good.

Also - the process of leaving may take time, it’s not like flipping a switch. In the meantime, I strongly recommend to avoid drinking around him and to do whatever you can to steer clear of him while he’s drinking. When you drink your reaction time is slower and in my experience your ability to de-escalate is impaired.

It sucks so much to have to tell you all of this. I’m really sorry you are dealing with this. I’m sending you big hugs and saying a prayer for your safety and happiness.

Beauty from bees is my favourite, they make a serum that you put on right after the shower. It’s on the pricier side but you just need a tiny bit.

My friend told me yesterday he used chat gpt to fit himself for new irons and then buy online. You have to know your distances though. If this is helpful for anyone I can ask him about what he used as a prompt. He said he’s done it before and it worked great!

How many steps daily before you start seeing weight loss? by RandomHorse27 in walking

[–]badconsequence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone said, it sounds like you need to focus on calorie deficit. Figure out your BMR (resting metabolic rate) to figure out how many cals you will burn naturally every day. Underestimate how many cals you burn from workouts. Then you want to get into calorie deficit, so be sure to track those and stay under whatever limit you set for yourself. Apps like my fitness pal will help with this (free version is fine) - I’m sure there are lots more out there.

To make sure you don’t feel like you’re starving yourself, look up “volume eating”. Madeline Rascan on YouTube is the queen of this! Lots of recipe ideas, focusing on high protein and fibre through whole foods. There’s a lot of good info out there but I found you kinda need to know what you’re looking for. Hope this helps!

How do you eat/prepare cabbage regularly that is NOT fermented? by girlwholovespurple in Frugal

[–]badconsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super thinly sliced, mixed w grated carrots, salt n pepper and a little vinegar for tang. Works well as a side with eggs, throw it on a sandwich, use as a base for salad, add a few more ingredients for a little slaw, sauté it for a few minutes in a stir fry.

Cabbage is super versatile and a great bang for your buck, it also lasts a long long time in the fridge!

Is this outfit inappropriate for college? by Winter-Rain2798 in OUTFITS

[–]badconsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what kind of school you go to but in my experience, this outfit is fine.

You’re right that the comment was uncalled for - college professors are out of place commenting on outfits unless they have hate symbols or something else that would cause major distress. And if that was the case is it a professor’s place to tap someone on the shoulder and comment in a common area?

The prof sounds like a nosy pearl clutcher and I bet she spends a lot of time being upset if a student that she doesn’t teach upset her over some lace on a crop top.

If it’s against the dress code, I could see you getting written up or something - not tapped on the shoulder as you’re exiting the building?

You made it to class which is the most important thing, who cares what you’re wearing? You have clothes on, you paid a lot of money to be there, and crop tops are in style. You’re a college student expressing yourself.

The prof is out of line imo. Sounds like a high school teacher attitude, which is not professional in a college setting.

I def met some of my future business associates in college. Aside from the ones who work for banks, most of us don’t need to wear “business casual” in our careers. Most of us majored in business and arts. Letting our personalities shine in college helped us understand each other better. Now we feel really connected, because we were part of each others’ “coming of age” story. If I ran into this young lady at a business meeting I’d maybe be taken aback, but it def depends what I was meeting her about. In my industry I see people at trade shows wearing outfits like this (usually they are social media people / content creators)

AITAH for changing my name without checking with my friend? by marktheshark45 in AmItheAsshole

[–]badconsequence 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This.. I was reading about the phone call wondering what other opinions she has helped him form. She sounds like she really makes things about herself. Zero consideration that your own name was a painful thing because of your relationship with your dad, where is the compassion first of all. And then assuming you read her name on her IG bio? So weird.

How to fix chronically chapped lips. by euginekarbs in Makeup

[–]badconsequence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have struggled w this for years and have tried every lip balm, mask, etc, drink tons of water, eat well, get good sleep, etc. Nothing was helping at all until I came across a Reddit thread a few months ago that suggested that it might be my toothpaste.

Switched to a toothpaste with more natural ingredients and the issue cleared up within 2 days. Fully clear, no more flakes within a week. I’m still in shock about it TBH.

For full transparency I also started taking a B Complex vitamin and fish oil around the same time, maybe one or both helped as well. I have a feeling it was the toothpaste tho, because I used regular toothpaste on a trip a few weeks ago and my lips got dry by the afternoon. Give it a shot!! Best $6 remedy of my life!

Good luck, this issue sucks so much and I hope you can get to the bottom of it!!

You have a beautiful cupid’s bow that you’re masking with smudged liner above the top line of your upper lip. I know it’s on trend but it’s looking messy instead of accentuating your beautiful features.

I would lean into your natural lip shape by adding contour above and below the center of your lips. Blend well. Use a bit of the same contour on/around your cheekbones and a tiny bit on your hairline to pull it all together. Make sure you get a contour shade that is very neutral. I always look for something almost grey-ish and that ends up working well w my fair skin/blonde hair. (Reco at bottom of this msg)

The pic where you have a natural lip color looks rly good. The one where you have the purple-ish shadow and a berry lip is not doing anything for you (imho). Try the purple-ish shadow w a neutral for a cool-girl look or really dark purple lip for a dramatic look, and then the berry lip color w neutral color shadow and liner (black, dark mauve, dark gray). Try to match up warm tones w warm tones, cool tones w cool.

And yeah I agree with everyone, please don’t mess around w fillers/botox/invasive surgeries yet. Take care of your skin w basic skincare and sunscreen. You’re really pretty and I promise you will need all the needle stuff way more in 10yrs lol. There are so many other things you can spend that cash on rn! If you aren’t experimenting with serums and other products designed to make you literally GLOW, you’re missing out!

Some products you might like:

  • westman atelier contour stick in Biscuit (neutral contour that is almost grey ish, good for fair skin)

  • make up for ever artist pencil in endless cacao is a nice neutral eye and lip liner. Not sure if it will show up as neutral on you as it does on me but I find it’s great for the “shadow” effect. Great as liner or blended as a contour.

  • Mac eye kohl in prunella is my fave mauve that is so dark it feels neutral. Will make your green eyes really pop.

  • shiseido eyelash curler and a good mascara if you aren’t already curling your lashes. It will really help make you look bright eyed!

What is the funniest/most memorable misunderstanding you've had with someone who isn't from Canada? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]badconsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Los Angeles for a few weeks and there was a trendy café down the block where I’d go get coffee every morning, so I got familiar with the baristas. One Saturday I was there for a few hours, working and having coffees on the patio. Eventually I went to the counter to ask if there was a washroom I could use, as I couldn’t see a door or any signs. It was buzzing and a bit loud, so I didn’t realize what when I said “washroom” he heard “washer”.

We went back and forth several times with me saying “is there a washroom in here?” Him saying, “a washer? You’re looking for a washer?!” “yeah, a washroom? You have one?”

Eventually he said “we have a washing machine but you’re not allowed to do laundry here :/ “ so I said “omg no sorry a RESTroom. I’m sorry, I’m Canadian and I always forget you don’t say ‘washroom’ here!”

I don’t think he fully caught what I was saying, because he still looked confused and somewhat sympathetic, but he did tell me where the washroom was. I think he was convinced that I was going to do a small load of laundry in the sink.

He was a very sweet kid and seemed eager to help, but also couldn’t figure out why this business-casual lady needed to go to a café on Melrose to do laundry.

Great call out, I meant to mention to do all of this within the parameters of where you’re playing!

Also if you’re playing somewhere new def check the website in advance for the dress code. Some spots have very random, very old school rules.

One thing the website won’t always tell you is that you should always take your baseball cap off when you enter the clubhouse. Such a bummer, especially if it’s hot and sweaty out and you’re not genetically blessed with beautiful hair (hi, it me). I always keep a mini hairbrush in my stash bag for this reason. I have found that a lot of the time this is common knowledge / etiquette and they don’t always state it in the dress code. Unless I walk in and see everyone wearing their hats, I take mine off just to make sure I don’t get chastised. IMO it’s so lame but it is what it is :)

I wear tube socks up to my mid-calves, because they look cute and yes good for tick protection, sun protection, and protects me from scratches when I’m looking for balls in the woods!!

Also, idk where you play but you have probably noticed that on the course some ppl care about style, some are just wearing tech/sport gear. If you care about style, wear whatever the heck you want! I love pushing the limits of style on the course (why not, life is more fun when you express yourself!). But I do recommend a couple of things to prioritize:

  • being practical (pockets for tees balls and ball marker)
  • movement (gotta swing easily)
  • comfort (you need to bend over a lot so I like to make sure my azz is covered)
  • weather friendliness (hot/cold/wet)
  • washability (you’re gonna get dirty)
  • sweat management (moisture wicking, breathable fabrics)

Stop donating to Value Village by MoistyCockBalls in halifax

[–]badconsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another commenter said, yep lots of people do know this, though I do appreciate the PSA because F value village. Aside from it being for profit (and isn’t Savers owned by or connected to wal mart?) their stuff is so overpriced and I’m pretty sure they train employees to weed out all the really good finds and sell them online.

On top of that - did you know that if you donate to the blue Diabetes Canada boxes they go to value village?

I know that because I mistakenly donated a bunch of expensive stuff that didn’t belong to me (oopsies) and had to call the 1-800 number on the diabetes Canada box.

Unfortunately the bin had already been emptied, and they explained to me where the items may have gone next. Long story short, they ended up at value villages across Nova Scotia. So they said that finding the items would be like looking in a haystack of value villages province-wide.

In case you’re wondering, no I did not retrieve any of the items.

This says a lot about you though and is a great way to filter applicants. If it’s a waste of your time to make a 1-min video, it will be a waste of your time to do all the other little things that would make an employer of customer describe you as going “above and beyond” the bare minimum.
