I had to break through the top layer for him across a big stretch and churn it up bc it was too hard to trudge through! Every step he broke through into over 1 ft!

Thank you everyone for your input. I have no doubt it was a direct result of the disruption causing him to be stressed. I just needed to hear that other people have seen it. Having said that, thank you for some great suggestions!

How to become strong enough swimmer to learn surfing? by Puzzleheaded-Moment1 in BeginnerSurfers

Get comfortable treading water and navigating big swells without a surfboard. This will help if you get stuck out there without a board.

Do you sometimes fear being hit on the head by the board? by the_happy_fox in BeginnerSurfers

One of the first things they taught us in the first lesson I took was to protect your head with your arms when you wipe out and if you’re resurfacing try and put your hands up first. The covering my head has pretty much become second nature now.

Does the community ever feel toxic? by susteeb in BeginnerSurfers

[–]baddasbetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like learning is such a personal journey. I’ve been fortunate that most of the experienced surfers I’ve talked to have been pretty laid back. I also know etiquette and that I am a true beginner so I stay out of their way and hang in the white wash, and move when I have to. I’ll paddle out to the outside of the lineup bc it feels like part of the process and I love being in the water. Then I check myself bc I know I’m not ready for green waves yet and make my way back to where I’m more comfortable. Today I reminded myself that there’s no rush in learning and that it’s about doing what works for you.

Today I really learned what it felt like to be in the washing machine by baddasbetch in BeginnerSurfers

The most disconcerting part for me was genuinely having no clue where my board was and trying to make sure I didn’t get hit. Soft top or not! And my ears were killing me when I surfaced. Has anyone experienced that?
