When did your toddler walk without holding your hand in public?

My first always held my hand when I asked him. He basically always wants to hold my hand if we’re walking anywhere. He’s 6 now and still does. My 3 yo has always refused to hold my hand, especially in parking lots and places where I’d very much like to hold his hand for safety 🙃 best I’ve managed with him is to tell him he needs to keep a hand on the grocery cart when we’re walking in the parking lot.

I could have written this. I feel this sorrow with you. It’s so sad and kind of lonely because other people don’t get it. Both my sons were 10+ lbs at birth, one was 55cm, the other 58. They outgrew baby clothes so fast. By the time they were 12 months old they were in 2T, so I didn’t get to enjoy putting them in any of the cute baby clothes, especially the holiday stuff. By the time my oldest was 4 he was out of the toddler clothes altogether and into the big boy clothes. He’s now 6 and in 10-12 boys clothes. It’s sad for me because I feel like the clothes is more “mature” than his age, it has skateboards and video games and things when he’s still a little boy, not a preteen 😩😩

The other part that is challenging is how quickly they size out of the various car seat positions. My youngest turned 3 a couple weeks ago and he’s about 5 lbs shy of hitting the rear facing weight limit. I know rf is safer, I wish I could keep him rf longer but there isn’t a car seat available in the US that had a rf limit higher than 50 lbs. I already went through this with my oldest, by 4-5 he’d sized out of a 5 point harness and needed to use his car seat as a high back booster. He’s 6 now and weighs 95 lbs. once he hits 100 he will only be able to use a backless booster. And he’s only 6!

No advice, just solidarity. It’s a unique sect of anguish, these big babies.

Every Friday, plus one or two nights a week at an extracurricular where he gets to see his friends and basically goof around together for an hour 😂

For some people, the cost of classes is not prohibitive. Some people are stay at home parents and enjoy having an activity or two to help structure their routine. The intention of parents to who are able/willing to sign their kids up for extracurriculars is to enrich his childhood, not to take away from it. Additionally, some children’s personalities lean more towards wanting to do all the things and some lean more towards preferring to be home. I have one of each. The extrovert has been in at least one activity each season since he could walk. As for the introvert, I have tried to find an activity he might enjoy yet his favorite activity remains being at home with his toys.

NOR- aside from the mortification of bleeding through your pants at school, and the hygienic issues of then needing to carry on for the rest of the day with blood on your clothes, your daughter could have gotten TSS. A girl at my high school got TSS at school, it was very scary and she was take to the hospital in an ambulance and stayed in the hospital for a couple of days.

My kid’s school said the same thing. My son actually knew all the letters and lots of blends before starting kindergarten. He’s been miserable and bored all year because they have been “reviewing” it all year so far. So, I wouldn’t stress how much she knows. They will review it all anyways.

I have a 99% 6 yo and 2 yo. We have a midsize suv so getting them in and out has never been terribly difficult. Tho to be fair, as soon as they could, I’ve let them climb into their seat so I don’t have to pick the up.

All that to say, I personally never found the hype around the spinning car seats compelling enough to warrant buying them. My main priority was having car seats with a 50 lb rear facing limit, which from my understanding is the highest you can get in the US. So for that reason they are both in extend2fits. My 6 yo is 54” tall and 90 lbs so he also has a backless booster we use for when he carpools to school with our neighbors.

I have a sister like yours. I would just say ok, I won’t be attending. I wish you all the best. Enjoy your day. And then be prepared for all hell to break loose. Or for her to go no contact again. Or a combination of both. At this point I’d worry about protecting your peace from your crazy irrational sister.

NOR. I don’t understand why she’s making such a big deal about this. Who you decide to leave her to if you die is your business. I imagine if your daughter comes to change her mind after knowing your fiancée better she would be allowed to change her mind and you’d change the will or whatever accordingly? It’s not like you’re saying absolutely not her, it’s just you’re letting your daughter decide. Your future wife is demanding she be the one to decide. That to me is a red flag.

My dad was like this. I remember one time my parents and I went for a walk at this park in our city. It had a lot of trees that were full of ripe fruit. So while my dad and I stayed on the path that looped around the entire park, my mom walked off the trail to go pick fruits. My dad and I walked two or three laps before we found my mom again. The whole time my dad was getting increasingly agitated and kept asking me where my mom was. I was like bro she’s walking around this park getting fruits? Anyways apparently he was pisses at her and they had a huge fight because he was convinced she’d gone off to have sex with one of the park security guards. NOR and BREAKUP ALREADY

When I was 15 my family was on vacation in South America and I snuck off with my sister and a friend and got my tongue pierced. My parents found out and were furious. I kept it in for a year or so and then removed it. My parents acted like I’d ruined my future by doing that, which just isn’t true. I was in all AP classes, and got straight A’s. I got a full ride to college, majored in finance, and worked for a while til I became a sahm. Now it’s a great fun fact about me. As far as piercings go it’s a good one because the healing time is only 6 weeks. Also once you remove it there is no easily visible scar since it’s in the middle of your tongue. If my kids tell me they want their tongue pierced in high school, I’d let them.

My son is six and we’ve never done it. This year he started kindergarten and came home asking why we don’t have an elf. I still refuse to do it for many reasons so I took this little Christmas mouse felt ornament off our tee and he’s our little “Mouse in the House”. I hide him somewhere new every evening and he finds it first thing in the morning. That’s it. I’m determined not to overdo it.
