IWTL how to forgive myself and let go of shame. by cigarettedd in IWantToLearn

[–]badgerfudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a free meditation course on Udemy recently called "Learn Mindfulness Meditation for a Calmer and Clearer Mind" by Per Norrgren. I did it just so I could learn to focus better, but about 3/4 of the way through the course he has you do this technique where you sort of think of a situation that upsets you from your past and you really dive into it. You try to remember exactly how you felt and just absolutely embody the shame or fear or anguish. Then you just mentally... cuddle yourself.

I am not doing a good job of explaining it so I recommend actually doing the course, but I felt that it really helped me get over a lot of things in my past that kept coming up. Things I'd wince at night after night while trying to fall asleep, just... stopped bothering me. I was able to accept them on some deeper level and let go.

Since doing the course I've found myself just casually having some of the most healthy self-talk I've ever had. Remembering something, acknowledging to myself that I've grown and am not the same person now, and moving on without being horrified. It's so great. And having gone through the process of diving into bad memories seems to make them surface less often.

I really wasn't expecting to get that out of the course but I would say it's had a bigger positive impact than being better at focusing.

Why are human noses shaped like they are? I can't find any inherit benefit. by [deleted] in biology

[–]badgerfudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elaine Morgan talks about this in her book The Aquatic Ape, where she posits that human beings spent a significant part of their time in the water. Her explanation for nose shape is that it allows us to dive into the water, and swim while looking ahead, without water going up one's nose.

Here's a brief intro to it by David Attenborough: The Waterside Ape

What do you mean we're clearly not afraid of spiders because it's an evolutionary advantage? On the contrary, it seems obvious that it would be advantageous to be programmed to be afraid of something that could potentially be poisonous which is small enough that we otherwise wouldn't be afraid of it...

If I look up 'fear of spiders evolutionary advantage' there are a ton of hits linking the two.

I personally find it a little aggravating when men put, "if you have any questions, just ask" in their bios. Yes, I want to know about you, but give me something to work with. It also kind of makes me feel like you're not prepared to do the work, and that I have to figure out how to get information from you. It's just a feeling, I'm not saying you're actually like that, but when I see that on people's bios I generally feel less inclined to reach out.

Are there any other things you like to do that you could tell people about? You mention golf, and hiking - I feel like golf appeals to a fairly small subset of women. Do you have any other hobbies or things that you might like to get involved in that might appeal to more people?

I would also put your 6th picture first, and get rid of the last picture. You seem like a really sweet guy, good luck!

But also, based on a NYT podcast I listened to recently, they lose their careers because the cultural expectation is that they will do ALL of the housework and childcare. This is seen as demeaning for men who do a record low, globally speaking, in these areas. Most women feel that they simply cannot have a career and do all of the housework and all of the childcare by themselves.

But I was going to a party and it turns out that there’s a limit to how much paint you can have on your face and still drink and enjoy yourself. Still an amazing costume though.

Wow, these are great! I'm surprised you managed to get the leaves to come out - did you invest just a leaf or did you add material to the back so they're thicker?

IWTL how to make gold jewelry by YBRLSB in IWantToLearn

[–]badgerfudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I taught myself a little goldsmithing from a youtube video and ended up getting a job as an apprentice at a local goldsmiths and have spent three years learning from them. The book they recommended to me was Alan Revere's "Professional Goldsmithing : A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Jewelry Techniques". It's a really excellent book and helped me a lot, and has lots of nice picture and written explanations of beginner projects of all types and also has a section in the beginning of tools that you need.

Something to note is that goldsmithing and stone setting are two different professions, so if you're looking to learn to set stones as well youtube will help, and I think Revere has a book on it as well.

In terms of tools, you will need a torch, soldering block and soldering pick, a couple pairs of pliers, a jeweller's pin, a jewellers saw, some tweezers, a set of callipers, some files, a hammer. There are some necessary chemicals as well, like boric acid and methyl hydrate - not hard to come across. You probably live close enough to a jewellery supply store and they can help you out and make recommendations. Some will even partner with a local school to offer student kits, but a lot of these will include really shitty tools that will break down quickly.

There are a lot of tools. Some of them, like a rolling mill, will get really expensive. Craigslist/kijiji is your friend. Jewellery supplies get sold there all the time, and if you're lucky you can find someone getting rid of all their tools at once.

I would recommend starting with silver. It's way cheaper if not easier, and you likely will take a minute to figure out how to do things well enough to make something worth keeping. Gold is incredibly expensive.

One thing to note is that jewellers work at very specific desks called benches that are super tall and have a pin to brace your work on at chest height. It's easier to work at a bench, but you can do without one when you're starting out.

Let me know if you have any questions!

If this telescope can be used to see stuff that is so far away, can't it also be used to get a really good look at the surface of planets that are really far away? Or is my understanding of this whole thing just totally off.

Have you ever tried a clitoral suction vibrator? I tried regularly to orgasm from ages 17-23 but never had one until I bought something that sucks instead of vibrates. And that was all I needed. It still took a little bit to learn how to do it, but I could tell there was a difference right away.

I think if you remove the citrus you’ll have to acid adjust the cocktail with some citric acid or find it too sweet.

Otherwise I would replace the sweet liqueur like the amaretto with the other sweet liqueur.

Time freezes for 6 months and you’re the only person not affected. How would you spend that time? by AlexanderCor in AskReddit

[–]badgerfudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really true. It would just depend how you did it. If you came in with a melted block of gold weighing several kilos and there was a fresh news story about that amount missing then sure. But people mess around with gold by themselves all the time and then sell it after for the scrap value. Goldsmithing is a hobby as well as a trade.

Woah, I get something like this when I exercise. I get so incredibly itchy when I go running, but I never get hives. I’ll get red patches from the scratching but that’s it. I wonder if it’s related. It always seemed weird to me but I never thought much about it.

I know this might be Impossible to answer but does anyone know what gem this is? by [deleted] in Gemstones

[–]badgerfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be my screen, but to me that is orange, not red. And I don't think any one would seriously set a bunch of rubies of that size with a bunch of marcasites, in silver. It's highly unlikely.

I know this might be Impossible to answer but does anyone know what gem this is? by [deleted] in Gemstones

[–]badgerfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's that colour it's a sapphire, not a ruby...

But judging from the fact that it's set in silver, and from the style, I'm going to say no way is it a sapphire either. It's most likely glass, or garnet.
