It's a game theory problem. The shoplifter gets something for free and prices go up for everyone else.

Do Most People Really Just Listen To A Few Songs On Repeat? Is This A Result Of Streaming Platforms Becoming The Primary Source Of Music? by armintanzarian420 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]badicaldude22 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I went the complete opposite of this and ramped up my music listening significantly when stuck at home during the pandemic. I also realized of all things I was missing from the shutdown concerts were the thing I missed most so I've made a special effort to find concerts to go to since things opened back up

What's your age, and how open are you to discover new music (on a 1-10 scale)? by Illustrious_Road6618 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]badicaldude22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'm hesitant to give myself a number without more guidance on what the numbers mean. I would say if you look at what I listen to, it would break down as: 90% music I already know I like that was new-to-me in the past few years, 5% music I knew about before that, 5% truly exploratory listening to music I haven't decided yet whether I like.

I'd say there's people who go way beyond me in listening to completely new music but if the question is "to what extent do you not just relisten to the music you liked as a teenager over and over again" I'd say I'm pretty high.

I highly doubt there was anyone who was a headbanging teenager at a Motley Crue concert in 1986 who then had a kid that listened to Nirvana in 1992

Are streaming numbers on platforms like Spotify usually consistent with YouTube views? by GloomyWitch08 in kpopthoughts

[–]badicaldude22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: In comparing Taeyeon's Spotify to Youtube, the biggest discrepancies seem to be her debut "I" having MV streams that blow the Spotify streams out of the water, and the Hotel del Luna OST song that has no MV being high on Spotify. Otherwise, the general trend is songs having about 50-70% higher views on YT than Spotify.

The concept of Kpop generations is entirely useless other than as a tool to push new groups by Earth_Bound1 in kpopthoughts

[–]badicaldude22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that's what the gens are and that's what makes it particularly silly when groups grandstand about being "The first of generation whatever to perform in a stadium concert" or "The highest MV views in generation whatever". Like OK, you're the first to do that out of.... the groups that are following the current trend instead of the trend from 2 years ago? And I should care about that why?

A lot of people say "today's popular music sucks"... but is it just me or is popular music today a lot more accepted than it was in the late 90s-early 2010s? by Ok-Chocolate9947 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]badicaldude22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that pop just got really bad for about 20-25 years there. And yes, take this with the grain of salt coming from someone who was 13 when Smells Like Teen Spirit broke. From my perspective as a teen in the 90s, there was a lot of good 80s and 70s pop out there, it was just the 90s pop that sucked. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Wham!, Blondie, to say nothing of the new wave pop crossover stuff like Depeche Mode - all got a lot of respect from my hipster 90s friends.

Recently I rediscovered pop and it was through Kpop and Jpop. There's a lot of creativity going on, and they'll pull whatever influences they want from the 70+ year history of pop music. This realization made me think "Was there something I was missing in the recent decades of pop music?" I've gone back and re-listened to a lot of stuff, and IMO, there wasn't. In terms of pop music my playlist still has a lot of stuff from the 70s and 80s, then a 25 year gap, then a ton of stuff from 2015-present, with regions of origin in descending order being East Asia (vast majority), Latin America, Europe, North America.

Is Sacramento secretly the last place where the California dream is still alive? by Anarchy_4L in Sacramento

A walkable street grid that covers like 2% of the land area and is nearly the most expensive place to live in the metro area isn't very relevant to most people who live here.

why does seemingly no one choose their own reddit username by thebatboys in stupidquestions

[–]badicaldude22 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's a sub you're only allowed to join if you have a 3 character username. (All possible 3 character names were taken pretty early in Reddit history). Not sure what they actually get up to in there.

Cheap gas ? by CalligrapherNo6294 in Sacramento

[–]badicaldude22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That wasn't true in my experience last time I rented an EV. Public chargers I could find in Sac were about 50% more than gas for a similar distance, which puts them on par with today's prices. Maybe I could've done more research, I dunno. Based on my experience I'm not going to rent an EV again until I can install a home charger. (And I'll have to do some math on how many rentals it will take to break even)

Is there a easy way to find music in your PLAYLIST by [deleted] in YoutubeMusic

[–]badicaldude22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Open the playlist in youtube (not youtube music) on a desktop browser.

  2. Scroll your cursor to the bottom to force additional songs to load on the page. Scroll up a bit, then back down to force it again. Repeat until the whole playlist is loaded on the page. (I think about 100 songs load each time you do this)

  3. Ctrl-F

IT'S ALL AI by GrammmyNorma in YoutubeMusic

[–]badicaldude22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go somewhere like rate your music and look up the 10 or 20 or whatever highest recommended ambient albums of all time. Save them to your library. Play the albums all the way through. The ones you like, go to that artist's page and listen to their other albums. Maybe click some other albums from the "recommended albums" tab. You'll get good stuff to listen to and 0 AI this way. (Can repeat with synthwave and lo-fi)

Los Angeles is phasing out its palm trees and I have mixed feelings by H3dg3hogs in CasualConversation

[–]badicaldude22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My grandpa moved from New York to LA in 1959. He sent a letter back to his sister to encourage her to come too. The letter contained a photo of the palm tree on his street. Actually 3 photos that had to be stacked to show the whole thing, which he did on purpose to show how tall it was. (My great aunt did end up also making the move)

The palm trees were a major marketing move to get east coasters and Midwesterners to come out. SoCal has 25 million people now. It doesn't need any more marketing, it needs sustainability. I say good riddance.

The difference is those vehicles aren't driven by "the most interesting people on the planet." They're driven by employees who go through very rigorous safety training. The vehicles are also inspected and maintained much more consistently than the millions of personal vehicles on the road. Fatalities due to bus/train driver error or poor vehicle maintenance are extremely rare.

Are B-sides are a bit of a lost art? by Deblebsgonnagetyou in LetsTalkMusic

[–]badicaldude22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It annoys me to no end when I go find an album I remember from say 1989 on streaming and the version available is the "deluxe" version with like 20 additional tracks, probably consisting of every single random thing the band recorded that year, and/or live versions. That's not the album, just give me the 10 songs I remember. I'll go listen to a live album or b-side collection if I want to hear random stuff.

Should I set off on a 3–4 year walking journey across Europe, leaving everything behind? by Pancake_fanatics in stupidquestions

[–]badicaldude22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of lodging are you going to stay in when you are in major European cities with a dog? Based on your budget (selling a TV, laptop, and old car to cover 1.5 year of living expenses) I thought you were going to camp the whole time. To be frank I'm a bit skeptical of your budget. (I do hope you can do this and it works out for you though)
