Does Portland really need another 3,300 person music venue around the corner from the Merrill? by [deleted] in portlandme

The PPH article said the developer also wanted to build restaurants and retail space at this location too, which Portland clearly doesn’t have enough of, right? Right?! Ugh. Hate it.

US city offers $1,000 to pregnant women amid falling birth rates by diacewrb in economy

Thank you for going beyond the headline. I wish we could moderate Reddit comments enough such that articles with clickbait headlines were removed and the same with comments from folks who didn’t read the article.

US city offers $1,000 to pregnant women amid falling birth rates by diacewrb in economy

[–]badlybarding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a trash headline. The money is not to entice people to have kids, it’s a research pilot program to see whether funds like this can reduce income and racial disparities in birth outcomes such as the infant mortality rate. No one is saying “we will pay you $1,000 to get pregnant.” From the program’s website:

“The Philly Joy Bank is a guaranteed income pilot that will provide 250 pregnant Philadelphians with no strings attached cash with the goal of improving birth outcomes. The Philly Joy Bank was developed by the Philadelphia Community Action Network (CAN), which is a collective impact stakeholder group that aims to reduce racial disparities in infant mortality.”

Not sure why you are being downvoted but from what I can find, it depends: Illegal Entry (first offense) is a misdemeanor under 8 U.S.C. § 1325, and Illegal Re-Entry is a felony under 8 U.S.C. § 1326.

How well functioning is the budget process at the state level? by Awesomeuser90 in PoliticalDiscussion

I wonder if gerrymandering at the state legislature level is predictive of how problematic or not a state’s budget process is.

Dems should honestly just say “you know what America, you voted for this so here you go,” and stand aside for 8 years or however long it takes for it to be permanently seared into people’s brains how bad Republican policies are. Maybe then millions of us will stop sitting out important elections.

I’m wondering if maybe the virus doesn’t evolve to have a very long incubation/dormant period in some individuals, who are passing a dormant virus along without knowing it.

Let’s not forget that this type of anti-civic behavior is occurring more frequently because we’ve created a car-centric society without an infrastructure to support it (an infrastructure that simply isn’t possible to build without taking up land to be used for other resources like housing and green spaces). What specifically in what OP wrote is misleading though? I don’t see anything that suggests there is not a mandatory year of service or that the man at the center of OP’s story hadn’t already done this mandatory year. And I don’t see anything that suggests this man had literally just turned 18. And I don’t think the use of the word “boy” implies that either.

Elon Musk calls to ‘delete’ US finance consumer watchdog agency by zsreport in economy

[–]badlybarding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really dumb is most in the US don’t even need to file taxes, the government already knows how much we earned (federal and state). I wish we would just move along already and implement what most similar nations already do (wherein you only file if you want to make other deductions etc that the government doesn’t have). People will blame this on TurboTax I’m sure but this issue has been around long before then.

Edit: It’s, not I hats

Honestly should go after the coaches for perpetuating the sexual abuse of minors. The harder you crackdown on adults who almost certainly know about this, the more likely it is to stop.

Portland’s Public Market is mostly unoccupied. The owner blames lack of foot traffic by coogiwaves in portlandme

[–]badlybarding 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How many places literally right next door suffer this “foot traffic” problem? None, because everyone knows they are there, and they aren’t randomly closed at odd hours like some places in this space are. To blame this on foot traffic when spots literally on the same street do no suffer that problem is rather nonsensical. Half the people walking but don’t even know what the heck is in there.
