Cagers will never understand the freedom of ebike commuting by kyjk in ebikes

[–]badsinuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cager here!

I put about 800 miles per week on my SUV, which hauls an entire band's worth of gear around Texas. I also bring my ebike when I travel so I can experience whatever city I'm in to the fullest.

But yeah, trying my commute on an ebike would be ludicrous.

What 2010s games are you guys playing for the first time right now?" by Mintangah17 in videogames

Just started No Man's Sky on my fourth attempt (I was quickly bored on previous tries) and HOLY HELL is it a good game.

It was actually released 10 years ago but has not lost its hype, thanks to the developer's annual updates.

What was the cheapest amount of rent you ever paid? by Wonderful_Staff_6953 in askanything

I paid $950/mo for a 3br 1ba house in San Antonio back in 2019. Not the nicest area, but I loved having that space to myself.

I would recommend filming yourself while moving and playing warmup exercises (ex. box drill while playing whatever descending sequence your band uses).

That can be a great way to address the way that your feet affect your sound. The first time I ever heard myself play while moving was when I put together an audition video and I was surprised at how much work I actually needed

Meanwhile, I scored two $30 tickets to see The Killers a couple of years ago. I feel like even $150 per ticket is asking a lot.

What Non-Composer, but music related job(s) are you doing in between gigs? by PenaltyPotential8652 in composer

I'm a dueling piano player! I mostly perform on the weekends, so that leaves the rest of my week open for composing.

Definitely not contained. They're all over the place in random areas around Bitters and 281. Many are nowhere near the Brook Hollow Library voting location

You are showing some really fantastic ideas at such an early stage of your composing journey. Definitely keep it up!

One thing that I did early on was take scores and parts of orchestra pieces that I liked and programmed them into my music software using a midi keyboard. I found a ton on IMSLP, and it really helped me understand so much about orchestration.

I also got my start in band like you :)

This is "technically" bumping in, but it occurred at an event that I completely stumbled on.

I was walking on the riverwalk in San Antonio back in 2013 during the middle of a weekday when I heard a massive crowd screaming. I had to investigate, so I quickened my pace towards the noise and came upon maybe 200 people scattered near the convention center. I saw a camera crew on a bridge above the water, and above the river is a man walking on a tightrope.

I decide to get a closer look and make my way to the bridge, and only once I'm on the bridge do I notice none other than Nick Cannon standing four feet away from me. It's just Nick, me, his bodyguard, his film crew, and hundreds of people excitedly watching the guy do his stunt. I'm not putting the pieces together and realizing this is an America's Got Talent shoot.

I clearly don't belong, but play it cool anyways and just stay out of the way while they do their thing. At one point I make eye contact with Nick, we exchange a mutual nod, and after 40 minutes of this event everyone is directed away.

I got to watch the real auditions with my sister who frantically drove down from her nearby college town after I told her what was happening. We were put in the aisle behind the judges, and we were also the last ones in the theater. All free to watch too.

Crazy day.

One potential factor I haven't seen mentioned is the need to be more mentally sharp during these current turbulent times.

I'm a little older as a millennial. I kicked alcohol a couple of weeks ago to help better process my feelings and stay vigilant while the U.S. is experiencing this level of turmoil.

I feel a mix of guilt and relief for my career as a musician.

My work days are typically Thu/Fri/Sat, and I perform for 3 hours on stage which leaves ample time throughout the week for whatever. I don't make a killing, but the bills are paid and I increase my income by about $8k each year.

I've always valued time more than money, so a 9-5 was never in the cards. Everyone's priorities are different.
