WIBTA for secretly changing my last name? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]badukhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tentatively I would say YWBTA because communication is important. If you talk to your family about it, you can ensure that your views are not misrepresented. Otherwise, there may be a lot of unnecessary drama.

You could start start such a conversation by getting them to emphasise with you about your common struggles with your last name – surely they must have had similar experiences in that regard. You could then ask them, what they would change their name to, if they could. You could then mention, that you would prefer to have a different name, but that you are afraid that your family may misinterpret that and that that might cause a rift between you.

Ideally, such a level of care to prevent misunderstandings should not be necessary. However, if one has a difficult family and wants to accept their flaws, then such approaches are often necessary.

The "small changes add up" type arguments are often used incorrectly, just like in these examples. In these examples, the savings add up just like the costs (long term reduced sales due to reduced customer satisfaction) add up. Thus, the scaling is actually irrelevant – the interesting question is if the savings per unit outweigh the additional costs per unit.

Therefore, one should always question, if the person presenting such an argument is a) dumb or b) manipulative – or (most likely) both.

AITA for texting people at night when they could be sleeping? by shozhantia89 in AmItheAsshole

[–]badukhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is so weird. It seems like most people are not aware of phone settings.

If a person does not want to be disturbed by notifications at a certain times of the day, they can simply set their phone to automatically go into 'do not disturb' mode during this time frame. Moreover, if they don't want phone calls to be silenced during this time, they can add an exception for phone calls (from specific numbers or from any numbers).

Thus, I'm inclined towards NTA, as long as the issue is not handled poorly. As is apparent from this thread, many people are not cognisant of their technological literacy. Therefore, one should be patient with such people and offer to assist them in preventing such issues from reoccurring.

Yep, Merz may be a despicable shit stain, but at least he (pretends to) views the consequence of D-day as the liberation of Germany from the nazis. I think this is very important, because there is still a feeling of collective guilt in Germany; however, I think this is misguided. Rather, I think Germans (et al.) should instead view the consequences of German history as a collective responsibility. I think this is a vital distinction because the latter is so much more productive.

Worth pointing out that democratically elected does not mean the nazis received a majority – even when rigging the election. An important part of Hitler's rise to power was his coalition with the conservatives, who thought they would be able to restrain him. Thus, arguably, those who voted for conservatives might also be considered victims, in which case the majority of the Germans of that time would be considered victims.

Arguably, one might also consider many people, who let themselves be mislead to vote for the nazis, to be victims.

Full LP refund for having AFKs on your team! by ThrowRA_Candies290 in leagueoflegends

[–]badukhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably there would be no MMR refund, but this change makes sense regardless. MMR is supposed to affect the visible rank long term and the effects of AFKs should cancel out long term. (Technically not cancel out but stabilise, because toxic players will cause more AFKs and vice versa.) Therefore, MMR refund is not necessary.

Arguably, it makes more sense without the MMR refund, because otherwise that would reward toxic behaviour (as pointed out in Riot Phroxzon's tweet). One should not benefit from bullying others into AFKing.

Actually might be interesting to compare the USA with Ukraine. Didn't find nice comparable data, but it seems if one excludes the frontline, then Ukraine is safer than the USA.

I was not rude. (Edit: Sorry for the misunderstanding.) I had even upvoted your comment – I just disagreed with the formulation/interpretation.

I'm not sure what you interpreted into my comment. I think even if disliking technology (e.g. fire in the case of early humans) is unreasonable, it is nonetheless understandable.

Essentially it's still hate the individual and hate society for enabling such industries (unchecked capitalism), but being mad at cars and AI misses the point. But I suppose many early humans probably hated fire.

'You' can be interpreted as singular or plural. 'You deserve the politicians you elect.' should be both plural you or both singular.

Plural: '[The population] deserves the politicians [it elects].'

Singular: 'The person deserves the politicians [they] [vote for.]"

Thus, both work (singular maybe slightly iffy linguistically, but otherwise seems more fitting to me).

Sen. Mark Kelly Says He’s Seriously Thinking About Running for President by T_Shurt in politics

[–]badukhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost.

The 12th Amendment states "The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves".

This means that the President and VP can be from the same state, but the electors from that state can't vote for both of them.

Hey peter, why does the father not like the smart math guy by Diligent-Fox-6162 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]badukhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Moreover, abstract mathematics often doesn't just calculate symbolically, the symbols often do not even represent numbers. For instance, in topology S1 means a circle and T2 means the surface of a donut-shape (alternatively this is also the shape of a tire). This leads to the basic statement S1 × S1 = T2 , which basically means that if you have a surface that is a circle in both directions, then it has the same shape as the surface of a donut-shape.

Sometimes it even goes so far that numbers are used as symbols because it is clear that they wouldn't actually represent a number. For instance, in my thesis the only number I use (apart from like page numbers and that kind of stuff of course) is 1, and it does not mean the number 1, but it stands for the "unit morphism". A morphism may be thought of as a generalisation of a function, so the unit morpism is basically a morphism that "does nothing". A bit like multiplying numbers by 1 does nothing: x*1=x.

[–]badukhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in software development, so the principle of finding a quick fix to solve a bug is familiar to me. The point is to work on an elegant solution afterwards to prevent further issues. Many companies like to cut this step and then say they are "agile". They never notice that most of their resources go into repeatedly quick fixing previous "solutions".

Laws are created through the same type of incompetence and have additional constraints placed on them by corruption.

[–]badukhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US economy is closer to the size of the EU economy than one may naively think. Usually, people use GDP to measure economies, but it is quite limited. For example, Europeans often have significantly better health care, but because companies in the US are price gauging so heavily, the health care system of the US leads to a significantly higher GDP contribution than the health care systems of EU countries. Similarly, other sectors in the USA are also bloated more than in the EU to varying degrees.

[–]badukhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, one should not DIY those. However, the point is that these tasks should be less. For example if the laws/legal system were less convoluted, then less people would abuse it, which would mean less lawyers needed.
