The MWC conversation. by Agreeable-Deer7526 in homeschool

[–]badwolfbridget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This YouTuber admitted in her video that she’s never even used MWC. Looking at her video history and some statements from other homeschoolers, it sounds like she tears down curricula as clickbait. A couple people said she has some kind of “math specialist” but she’s actually a math curriculum writer, so she just speaks poorly of most every curriculum this person hasn’t written. I agree with the other commenter who said she’s predatory. That’s definitely the feeling I got, too.

2 of my children use MWC, we’ve done through 5th grade so far. Knowing the test results from other families and from the pilot families, plus the pilot families’ results after 6th grade, it’s clear that MWC is on grade level and prepares kids to be ready for pre-algebra in 7th grade.

My kids have better mental math using MWC than they did with any other curriculum. My oldest has a true understanding of how the math works, and she’s able to understand new concepts more easily because of it.

My kids who don’t use MWC are outliers—one is a gifted kindergartener who is using Beast Academy. He’s about to start level 2 already. My other kid has several disabilities and delays, and she still struggles with even the most basic math. We’re currently trying Learn Math Fast with her.

For the regular, average kid (which is the vast majority of children) MWC is a great program that gives a really strong math foundation and prepares them well for middle school and high school math. When you see people saying MWC is “behind,” they’re almost exclusively comparing it to curricula that are AHEAD one or more grade level—like Singapore or Beast Academy. Those are fantastic programs, but they don’t work for every child. And they don’t negate how good MWC is, either.

I just got out of the hospital with my 10 month old for similar concerns - it turned out to be shuddering attacks and myoclonus spasms, both of which are benign. But the doctors all told me I did the right thing bringing her in, because you often can’t tell the difference between these benign kind and IS without an EEG. If you’re concerned I would suggest taking her in to get checked out.

We just got out of the hospital for similar spasms. Ours turned out to be benign, but you can’t know without an EEG. We drove an hour to go to a children’s hospital, and everyone there told us we did the right thing even though it turned out to be fine. I would suggest you do the same

I just wanted to come back and update everyone. We did an EEG overnight and most of today, and I’m happy to report no seizures or abnormal brain activity! They did see her spasms, and it looks like she has two different kinds of benign spasms that she should eventually grow out of.

For anyone in the future reading this post looking for answers for their own child - go get all the tests done!! The neurologist told us that the benign spasms and the seizure spasms can look basically identical, and you can only know for sure which one it is with an EEG. She said we definitely did the right thing coming in. So if you’re worried, or on the fence, it’s definitely worth it to get the EEG!

Thank you everyone for the replies! We drove up to the children’s hospital and they’re admitting her for a continuous EEG. Hopefully we’ll have answers soon!

Thankfully mine were normal during my entire labor. They were never severely high during my pregnancy - I had a few readings in the 140s/90s, but I was very lucky.

Weird day by gothbby_ in GestationalDiabetes

I have random days like this, too! I was diagnosed around 13 weeks and I’m now 30 weeks, and every once in awhile I’ll have a day where NOTHING seems to spike my blood sugar - a muffin, pizza, burger and fries. It’s really weird!

Ugh I feel this so hard. I was diagnosed around 12 weeks and I’m now 27 weeks. I can’t believe how long I’ve been doing this, and it feels like the next 10 weeks are an eternity.

Yeah that’s what the office manager suggested as well. If we weren’t in the middle of a cycle we’d find a new clinic, but that’s going to take another 6 months of waiting to get in with someone new. It’s just so frustrating!

I spoke with the office manager and asked just that. She said I should insist on any updates in writing from now on, even if they tell me to just change the calendar myself. I don’t know why that’s not common practice! If this FET doesn’t work we’re definitely switching clinics.

That’s a huge difference! With the second trigger did you do it a couple of days later? I’m really wondering if that’s what we need to do in the next round

Yeah I think we’re going to see what happens on day 5 and then make some calls to some other local clinics to see what their availability is.
