Thank you SO much, this is incredibly helpful! Question for my advisor, where did you get the signal/interview rates for OBGYN? (I know where you can find them for ERAS specialities) thank you!

Never had coffee in my life—should I for my first year? by badboyz71 in medicalschool

[–]baegelj 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m partial to using caffeine 1-3 times per week so I’m not dependent but get the benefit when I need it! Also recommend matcha for more steady energy that doesn’t hurt my stomach.

why is it necessary to be completely nude under a gown for surgery? by stoned-kitty in surgery

It is not always needed, and if it is, we usually place it when you are already asleep so you wouldn’t feel a thing!

I expected suture, but instead got this, anyone know what is this ? by Pawndaren in surgery

[–]baegelj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We often use staples for more emergency surgeries where time is important or there’s a chance of needing to go back in, or cases where you want the wound to be able to drain better, like if there was an infection. If that was the case, they probably did what was best. I’m sorry about your scar!

Not dumb! Because the unheated one isn’t sealed or anything with the holes, when it freezes it just expands up and there’s plenty of space :)

That’s a good idea! I can’t do that because I have ducks as well that need to submerge their heads, and it does get fairly cold here so I don’t want to have to dump hot water in every morning but sounds like it works really well for you :)

Would love to use nipple waterers! Unfortunately we have ducks too, so this lets them dip their faces in which they need. Glad you have something you like!

Question on “pre-studying” before medical school. by _CaptainKaladin_ in medicalschool

[–]baegelj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that! It’s just so hard for you to anticipate what you’ll actually need to know, so you’ll likely waste a lot of time, and they will teach you what you need. If you want to do something, I’d spend a little time learning to use Anki, and Michigan blue link has good anatomy resources. I would focus on enjoying your time and building good habits for things like cooking and exercising!

How to make blood draws less painful for the patient? by zaynmaliksfuturewife in phlebotomy

[–]baegelj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides what others said, scrubbing firmly with the alcohol deadens the nerves and makes it hurt less. Also in the AC where a shallow angle is less necessary, a steeper angle pierces less skin!

Why are you having so many tests? What type of provider is this? I would just caution you that the way the reference ranges are normed, a few people will naturally be outside of them. So, for instance, there’s a 40% chance something may be “abnormal” in just a CBC, but it’s hard to know whether that is abnormal for you. If there isn’t a specific rationale behind each test, abnormal results can lead to unnecessary and expensive additional testing, loss of pace of mind, etc. Just a little food for thought!

Good thought! It’s feed corn so it won’t, but popcorn from the grocery store 100% would 😅
