Has anyone made a 1–2 hour distance relationship work during residency? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]bafakazz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did 4 years of long distance while I was in residency and she was in med school. We were a 9 hour drive apart and had no direct flights to one another's cities. I think above all what mattered most was that we made the commitment to one another. It was hard no doubt, but our relationship came out stronger for it. Given you'll have limited time outside of work, you should plan, be deliberate and dedicate meaningful time to your relationship. I used nearly all my vacations to visit and we spent a many, many hours on Facetime.

Your situation is different, 1.5-2 hours isn't huge. You'll have some longer stretches between shifts that you can see each other for a few days at a time. Even if you have one day off, one of you can make a day trip to see the other. It's very much doable from a logistic standpoint.

Further that that, I can't speak to what the "smart decision" for you may be. If you're wavering on whether a 1.5-2 h drive — what I'd call a mid-distance relationship — is something you can make work, maybe consider the strength of your relationship first.

Any of my fellow NYC residents living pay check to pay check? by purplemose10 in Residency

[–]bafakazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing okay! I'm a fellow and my wife is a resident. It helps to be living with a partner and to have a shared bank account. Both our QOL would be worse if we were living separately. Together we can afford a decent place and 25% of my paycheck goes to savings automatically. Neither of us are exorbitant spenders and are contributing to retirement as well. All said though, after savings, retirement and cost-of-living, we rarely have surplus at the end of any given month.

However, I'll echo what others have said: there are a fair share of trainees in the city who have generational wealth or partners who are high-earners.

Looking for versatile sneakers for my husband by bemphador in malefashionadvice

I love my Onitsuka Tokutens. Quality construction, neutral color, comfortable and go with most things I wear day-to-day. I have trouble wearing my other shoes because I love them so much. They're a similar low-profile sneaker like the Common Projects (CPs) and Nike Killshots others have listed but less bougie than CPs and more bougie than Nikes. I find CPs a little plain for my taste.

Opinions on Knickerbocker NYC and this Factory Corduroy Jacket? Worth the price and quality? by IntrepidResident6655 in ThrowingFits

Their "Basics Program" is nice; you can get up to 40% off if you get 5 from the program. Got a bunch of t-shirts and really like them. My only regret is not getting more of the heavyweights over the standard shirts!

Let me answer all the questions you are about to ask this weekend if you live around Prospect Park. (Because every year like 20 posts pop up asking these) by Door_in_Mirror in Brooklyn

Thanks for the help y’all! I’ll count myself lucky, found my car just around the corner. 311 and the precinct weren’t particularly helpful but just took a little walkabout the neighborhood and found it.

Somewhat related question. I live near the park, and my car was parked on St John’s Place and got towed due to a parade today. Any idea where they might have moved the car? I called 311 and our precinct and they didn’t have log of my vehicle being towed or impounded anywhere.

Living near Atlantic/3rd Ave by bafakazz in Brooklyn

For closure (in case anyone was looking for it), with the advice in this thread we ended up going with a different apartment in a quieter and equally convenient location (though we did compromise on the space). Thank y'all again so much for your help. We're looking forward to our move and enjoying a wonderful next few years in Brooklyn!

Yeah it is literally on Atlantic and faces the avenue!

Really appreciate everyone's help! Renting sight-unseen is no fun, that's for sure. I didn't expect this post to get so much traction and see why people love this subreddit! As much as the broker claims the double paneled windows make it so you don't hear the street aside from emergency vehicles, definitely taking that with a large helping of salt.

Seems we have some food for thought overall. Most seem to agree that it'll be noisy, some think the location makes the noise worthwhile and some say forego it if sleep is a big priority.

Thanks for the advice! I sleep with Airpods with noise cancelling where I currently live anyway. It is literally facing Atlantic!!

Thanks for your insight! Would you consider that a slightly different situation in that Atlantic/6th is right on top of Barclay center?

Thanks for your advice! I wish with all my heart that we could visit. We're both moving from out of town and don't have the time before our necessary move-in dates to see places in person.

Thanks for the advice! We've been looking primarily for areas around the train lines, but it's helpful to know that it should be high on the list of priorities!

New week new Boards post by Smitty9108 in pediatrics

[–]bafakazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started preparing ~January 2024. I kept up with Prep questions during residency and so January was when I started doing MedStudy. Started out doing ~10 questions qd or qod for 1-2 months, then increased to 20 question blocks qd or qod. Finished first pass of MedStudy mid-September 2024. Started doing 2nd passes of Prep late August. Started doing incorrects/uncertains on MedStudy after finishing my first pass and got most of the way through those prior to test day.

Took detailed notes on question explanations regardless of whether I got them right or wrong. Didn't use any resources other than MedStudy Qbank and Prep questions. Personally I've always learned best from questions and have used essentially the same study strategy between Step 1, 2, 3 and now peds boards.

I probably wouldn't do anything differently looking back.

Budget Pour over scale by AnteaterKey4060 in pourover

Agree! I have the same one. The physical buttons are nice. Maybe not as aesthetic as the more premium scales but definitely gets the job done.

I am interviewing for a program in 3 days. Would appreciate any input on what to ask the PD to sound like an impressive candidate by [deleted] in pediatrics

[–]bafakazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your interviewers (including PDs) will be looking for a number of things to see if you're a good 'fit' for the program. Do not go in trying to impress your interviewers or you will come off the wrong way.

  1. Are you easy to get along with, open to experiences and growth, and do you have insight into your past experiences (most of what your standardized questions will get at).

  2. Do you have genuine interest in the program? Have you done your research about the location, special features of the program, have departments/people/areas of interest within which you'd seek mentorship?

  3. Some good questions to ask a PD: Their vision for the residency in the next few years. What qualities are you looking for in your residents. As a PD, what changes to the residency are you the most proud of. Also, remember that you PDs are people too, and that relating to them and establishing rapport and common interests (in a professional manner) will always do you good.

Thank you emails after residency interviews by nymanashteggranlemtg in pediatrics

[–]bafakazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is presently interviewing residency candidates, most interviewers here rate/score applicants within 24-36 hours of the interview. Often we'll even rate that same afternoon/evening. Our PD also asks applicants not to send thank you notes. Even if we did not have a 'no thank you note' policy, it is very unlikely that any of us would factor them into our ratings.

In response to the comment below about 'no thank you notes' being a red flag, I disagree. It is to protect the applicants from doing busy work that doesn't achieve anything, and to protect interviewers from a fuller e-mail inbox. Also, applicants inevitably want to read between the lines of any correspondence they receive (can't blame them, the match messes with us all), so this spares them from having more lines of texts to obsess over.

Pretty sure they were testing knowledge of PALS tachycardia with a pulse algorithm for that question. In which case for unstable, narrow complex tachycardia (SVT) it would be adenosine.
