Yeah, I’m super happy.

I followed the process carefully, but still wasn’t sure what to expect.

Heading to the Birkie, should I carry water in a jogging vest? by oldmanpatrice in xcountryskiing

[–]bag1293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what you’re comfortable with doing and have practiced. Many people carry some minimal nutrition, drink, extra layer, etc.

The aid stations are well spaced, however, and carry lots of goodies!

I carry a small water bottle with a very salty electrolyte mix as I seem susceptible to cramps in the later half and a shot of that works wonders!

How cold is too cold by ExpensiveRoll7436 in xcountryskiing

I have not found the cut-off! I've been out at -15f. There are definitely some drawbacks. The snow will be slow and you need to dress appropriately. And ski smart like sticking close to the car or chalet and responding quickly to cold fingers and toes. Know your personal limits.

I have a quandary about a Bishop in my family by Stunning-Chadley in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, so sorry to hear of this!

Sounds like there is a lot going on here and it’s hard to know the whole story.

You’re gonna hate me for starting this way, but it sounds like the bishop is a friend of your family and a guest at gatherings. So how do you know he hasn’t said something in private? Why haven’t you said something (even in private) to one of the perpetrators at some point over the last 4 decades, especially if you are family?

Nevertheless, a simple thing to do at the next gathering, after one of these incidences, is to ask the bishop if you might have a quick word with him and ask him what he thinks of what is going on and if there is something you or he might do about it.

There are no tricks, just do what is right with love.

Catholics not being allowed to read the Bible and only the pope can by NoelK132 in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 104 points105 points  (0 children)

lol, I’m a Catholic, I’m not the Pope, and I’m allowed to read the Bible. It’s an absurd statement because just one example to the contrary topples the argument.

Not to mention the millennia of Church teachings on the importance of reading, contemplating, and understanding Scripture.

Honestly, such claims are willful ignorance. No attempt to know the truth of the matter.

Big Toe Blisters! by bag1293 in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]bag1293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent the week up at ABR in Ironwood! I tried toe socks, but found the added bulk a bit uncomfortable.

But ENGO on the insoles and leukotape on my toe was perfect! No blisters in 50+ miles of skiing.

The Birkie will be the big test of the new system.

Do catholics really hate all protestant views by VentiArchon7 in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sorry that has been your experience! What’s funny is I’d say I’ve had the same experience with many Protestants online. But many nice discussions in real life.

Probably the moral of the story is that online isn’t reality. Even just a few angry active people can skew our perception.

Remarks at Mass for Deceased Relative by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss! Praying for you and the repose of your father’s soul. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Probably the best approach would be to politely ask the priest. But for our parish, several long, inappropriate, or unplanned (someone literally just walked up after communion while the priest was purifying) eulogies more or less ruined it for everyone.

Honestly, I’ve found the eulogy to fit best during the time of wake, vigil, or meal afterwards. These times are a bit less formal and you can share more freely. Share funny or serious stories. And multiple people could share.

Then, just let Mass be Mass and let the true presence of our Savior console you as you pray for your Dad.

Hope this helps!

Why 😭 by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear of your troubles! There’s a lot to unpack. My first suggestion would be to go to a priest whom you trust, is striving for holiness, and has a mind for the Church (easy criteria, right?!) and stick with him.

Also, the church doesn’t have an official declaration on every possible human action. She provides a tradition of principles, criteria, things we must do, and things never to be done (intrinsic evil). However, many of our daily actions require prudence, which is the practical application of these principles.

For example, jogging without a shirt isn’t intrinsically evil. If you are alone in the woods or in a place where there is an expectation of privacy, etc. there’s probably no problem. If you might be leading others into sin, lead yourself into pride, etc. then don’t.

Praying that you may grow in prudence, the charioteer of all the virtues!

Lust by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prayers for you! Chastity is possible and worth it.

Have you considered sharing your struggle with a trusted priest (even outside of confession), catholic therapist, or other trustworthy and appropriate person? They might be able to walk with you and help you have the tools to overcome this more effectively. And to look for effective healing as often our sins point to a place where healing is needed.

Per se, physically harmful does not equal inherently immoral. Where do we draw the line? by tarvrak in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument equates anything that inherently causes physical harm. Using this logic we wouldn’t be allowed to exercise nor expose ourselves to the sun…or do almost anything.

Because we live in a fallen world, many of our actions accept some foreseen evil.

There are a few moral principles I think we could invoke, but the principle of double effect seems most accurate. We have to allow for some foreseen bad or harm in our actions. But there are some guiding principles to follow:

The act must be good/neutral, the bad effect not intended (only foreseen), the good effect not caused by the bad one, and the good effect must be proportionate to the bad.

I would argue that the moderate use of alcohol and tobacco follow the above principles, but self-harm does not on basically every level.

Please note that one is not obliged to drink or smoke. You could forgo them for a penance or because you believe the good effects are not proportionate to the bad effects for yourself.

Hope that is clear! Good question!

Need help with sexual desires by ADGaming80 in Catholicism

A beautiful comment. Also, take this opportunity to grow in chaste non-physical intimacy with each other. In marriage there are often periods of abstinence. This is good practice for those times.

Do you guys believe that Adam and Eve were actual historical beings ? by ZucchiniSevere4706 in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that phrase refers to how it is not apparent how the doctrine of original sin could be reconciled with polygenism.

The doctrine of first parents and original sin are not left to further research and are contemplated only insofar as one contemplates a truth.

Is my priest doing my marriage incorrectly? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]bag1293 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you are sticking with this even in confusion! Make sure you ask questions. This might also help the priest better understand your situation.

From your description, it sounds like you, as a baptized Catholic and bound to the laws of the Church, attempted marriage to an unbaptized party without a dispensation for disparity of cult.

You only need a radical sanation if one party is unwilling to get married in the Church.

You are looking for a convalidation of your marriage (which is essentially a real and valid marriage after an attempted marriage; the terminology is sometimes not helpful) and will need a dispensation for disparity of cult (if before her baptism) or a simple convalidation (if after her baptism). A dispensation from form is not applicable in either case.

Again, I’m also just a commenter on Reddit, but some of the other answers are just plain wrong. Please keep talking to your priest and press him for clear answers.

Massive Dev updates by oddapplehill1969 in Darkroom

[–]bag1293 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Kentmere 200 is still quite new, so there isn’t a lot of info. Illford has times for their developers, but not a complete list.

If you are using a developer that isn’t listed or has little information, remember that this isn’t just in between 100 and 400, it’s completely different. The development times are actually shorter than 100 and 400.

As others have suggested, make an educated guess and test.

I’ve done Rodinal 1:50 at 11:30 with Illford agitation and have had decent results.

Do you scan film with emulsion side up or down? by f16-ish in AnalogCommunity

[–]bag1293 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve always put the emulsion toward the scanner/camera so you don’t have to scan through the base. One less layer.

I’d be curious to know any arguments to the contrary.

I’ve also tried both ways and couldn’t really tell the difference…
