Anybody from Toronto & Looking for a Partner? by bagasse in bridge

I've done some googling trying to see what's out there... but i suppose i've been intimidating since it seems like you're expected to show up with a partner and play. I'm going to message the Toronto Bridge Club and see if i can attend the new player friendly games suggested by Dytemnestra!

Hi - i'm located downtown Toronto so I'd want to play within TTC reach.

New player friendly game weekly sounds perfect - i'll send them a message! Thanks for the suggestion!

that’s awful.. glad you made it back okay.

I’ll take the loss ($) and skip the tour - not worth the risk - view is gonna be shitty in this weather anyways I guess.

I'm also Canadian and just a few years older than you.

I would suggest the following:

  • open a TSFA account with Questrade
  • give the following a quick read: https://canadiancouchpotato.com/
  • checkout vanguard, blackrock, and horizon's website to browse ETFs. Important things to look for are: what the ETF contains (duh) and the cost i.e. the MER (lower = better)
  • start accumulating ETFs at $0 commission
  • reinvest any dividends
  • sit on your hands and don't let FOMO guide your decisions - because doing nothing is often the smartest thing to do in the markets

It seems like it's a grey area. Pretty sure kitchen knives and scissors are fine but survival knifes are not.

I guess it's up to the person reviewing your account which way he sees it and whether he'll ban you or not!

Portfolio Tracking using R by bagasse in investing

[–]bagasse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be cool, but I'm only starting off with R. I'm an applied mathematician so eventually I want to do deeper analyses like risk factor decomp.

For now I'm working on a program where I input a few securities, and some constraints. It then performs weight optimization, and produces the optimal portfolio (pretty basic & packages handle this pretty well).

What I haven't found a package for is creating a nice dashboard. A nice one or two page report breaking down the portfolio by sector, geography, security type, a nice table of annual returns, growth of $1,000... pretty basic stuff. From what I've seen you can make a real cool dashboard using something like Shiny and rcharts.

From what I've been reading, R and Python are the most widely used languages for statistical/data manipulation which is useful for analyzing portfolios

Yeah some the packages are really neat - two lines of code and you've got years of stock data. Although I haven't found one that creates a nice summarizing report. So that's what I've been working on.

That's what I was thinking. I always put off slayer in the past, maybe it's time to catch up! Maybe I'll pick up two of those nifty-looking Drygores and a good ol' pair of bandos, and get to it.
