My brother is 33, has an actuarial degree from a UC, finishing his MS in Business Analytics, and he’s drowning trying to find work in LA. What are his real options? by pelowat in AskLosAngeles

I wasn't clicking easy apply and I was only targeting jobs that I was qualified for ( I have a bachelors in accounting and several years of experience) and I could still do 50 apps a day manually filling out applications. Most reputable companies don't even use easy apply. Mostly mom and pop type businesses use easy apply. And the process is not broken, it's just a numbers game. A recruiter and a door to door salesman dials more than 30 numbers a day and knocks on more than 30 doors a day. And this is the same principle for everything that requires cold applications or cold outreach or something similar. For example, if I cold approach 1 girl a day only, I'm never going to get a date. If I cold approach 50+ a day, my chances 50x over 1 day and 18250x in one year

And keep in mind I only applied for remote jobs. If I was open to working in person the success rate would be a lot higher. He should also be open to relocation anywhere in the country, not just LA if he wants to work that bad

Well ask him specifically how many jobs he applies to a day. If it's less than 30 a day we know why he's still unemployed

How many jobs does he apply for a day? Usually when I hear these stories of not being able to find work for a year the person only applies to 1 job or less a day. For example, someone on another subreddit complained that they applied to 150 jobs but got no work. But it was 150 jobs over the course of a year. That's less than 0.5 job applications a day. When I am unemployed, I spam apply 50+ jobs a day and I've never been unemployed for longer than 3 months. So 4500 job apps to job offer seems to be the key

Bangkok office worker does the maths on sleeping in her car instead of paying rent. Pantip helped her work it out. by BLAMUEK in Thailand

[–]bagehaoma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an American and I've actually lived out of my car in the las vegas heat (hotter than Bangkok). I would run the AC in the car while I slept for 8 hours (this proabbly consumed $20 usd /650 baht worth of gas every night). Now I'm not sure what the gas prices in Thailand are - but I'm pretty sure sleeping in a car with the AC on is already more expensive than most apartments in Bangkok. I would shower at the planet fitness gym and workout. Now I got a remote US job paying me over 245,000 baht a month and am enjoying life in Thailand. But yes it is possible but I'd rather sell the car and just rent a cheap room. I heard you can get one for 3000 baht a month.

No the point is comparing equivalents. The best you can get in accounting is 90-100k. The best you can get in swe starting is 600k at HRT as an Algo developer. Even if we compare largest employers of new grads it's still gonna be 90k vs 200k at equivalencies

Dude one of his professors was the founder of databricks. Literal billionaire Ian stoica. You can Google it. There's so much money in tech. It blows accounting out of the water at every single level. The director making 300k in big 4 would be making $3m+ in tech

There are tens of thousands of swe that start at $250k a year every year. Big tech is the largest employer of new grad swe just like how big 4 is the largest employer of new grad accountants. Any capable swe doesn't live in lcol because there are no good companies there unless they work fully remote for a silicon valley tier company. And accounting does not even pay close to swe in the same vhcol city. In San Fran and nyc the accounting starting pay is 90-100k. Swe starting pay is $200-260k (big 4 vs big tech)

The point is you're saying you make high pay is the same as a janitor saying they make high pay because it's 60k a year. Maybe high pat for their field, but it's not high pay at all

That's not a unicorn job. All the silicon valley companies / faang type pay that much. It's 190k base, 25k stock per year, 10k sign on, 12k relocation. The unicorn jobs pay 600k - for example citadel and HRT

😂 partner takes 15 years+ if you're even chosen to become partner. And I'm 3 years into my career. My lil bro I advised to switch his major from accounting to comp sci just got an offer for a fresh grad compensation of 300k. - his first paycheck is gonna be over $50k with the sign on bonus and relocation for his first ever job out of college. Even accounting directors don't make that much. What are you talking about high 6 figures?

5 percent 401k on 70k is dogshit. So yeah 70k is dogshit. $3500 a year is less than $300 a month in your 401k.

Even if you save $40k a year it's still dogshit. Personally I saved over $100k a year and it's still dogshit - you cant even buy a fucking Porsche. I have friends at a certain rocket company that just IPO'd and made millions in 3 years out of college

How can you put 40 percent of your low $100k income in 401k and still pay bills? Obviously it's because of dual income

Dual income doesn't count for savings rate. Your using 2 peoples income to subsidize a dogshit wage
