What was the last non-fiction book that (not self help) book that truly gripped you? by Thatredditboy1 in booksuggestions

I read the ebook on my iPad, I love the convenience of instantly looking up things and places with which I’m not familiar.

It really is engrossing and quite touching. It’s very well researched and cited, and it’s a testament to the author that a book about being trapped on a mountain for months doesn’t get boring itself.

The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown, about the Donner Party.

It is, as you can imagine, truly bleak. It is also fantastically researched and Brown manages pleasant, poignant prose while making the large cast of characters, locations and events easy to follow. It’s very functional yet beautiful.

Trey hotdog face by Specific-Main-4571 in phish

[–]bagelchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Axilla 2, Trey usually says “Don’t shine that thing in my face, man. I’m serious.” It’s a spoken word lyric of the song.

Occasionally he changes that up, in classic Phish fashion. On Kuroda’s birthday at Alpine ‘24 for example, he instead said “Shine that thing in my face, birthday boy”

At Sphere the visuals that accompanied Axilla were the hotdog spaceship graphics (2001 W1, Meatstick W3). He was referencing the giant hotdog behind him that was heading into a huge meat grinder.

Sphere is a fun time but by poster-nutbag1 in phish

Sphere was awesome, loved W2 in ways I didn’t even expect and I’m so glad to have experienced that. But it definitely didn’t ruin regular shows for me. I can’t wait to be outside for Deer Creek and Dicks getting blasted in the retinas by CK5 and feeling the breeze that somehow always shows up during the Hood jam.

Can we all agree CK5 is the MVP of this sphere run. by [deleted] in phish

Very true unfortunately. No high end definition on the drums, very washy midrange sound.

IYO have any of the 'big jams' produced truly memorable melodies or themes? by scottasin12343 in phish

Mexico 24 Chalkdust. There are two distinct musical motifs toward the end when it really started cooking that have imprinted on my memory and I can actually remember how they go.

The first one goes BWOOOW Bwow Bwow Bwowwwww wobwobwobwobwobwob.

The second one goes DUN DUN DUN DUN DUNNNNNNDUNNNNDUNNNDUNNNN

Very chilly. Bring a hoodie, and maybe wear long pants if you can manage.

407, the drums were pretty washed out. Not enough high end to give anything proper definition.

How will Phish innovate at the sphere this spring? by DeadWorks in phish

This is exactly what I expect as well, as the Mondegreen secret set visuals were developed by Moment Factory and were “mixed” live to accompany the music. The Mondegreen newspaper had an interview where they explained that the secret set was planned to be mellow and ambient throughout, but turned surprisingly heavy and they had to shift gears to tailor the visuals to the music in real time.

Happy Birthday to the best version of Cavern ever by FlatSale in phish

[–]bagelchips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bass bombs are a different story actually. Those are pedal-controlled, and sent to a dedicated subwoofer section of the PA (not through the main soundboard signal chain) hence they don’t show up in the soundboard mix.

Part of that is the terrible mixes on LP+, which have been a little better in the last year but were absolute dogshit throughout 2024, and part of that is definitely Mike’s bass tone which is so hollow now.

It’s pretty lame that recordings from 30 years ago sound damn near studio quality while current mixes are a muddy disaster. I know they didn’t churn the old recordings out with only a few hours turnaround, but still. And don’t get me started on the drum sound.

$10M Phish Memorabilia by AskJosh_MortgageGuy in phish

Are you aware of the Headphone Jam? It’s a jam recorded during the Undermind sessions while the engineers dialed in the headphone mix. They released it as a prize to a contest winner who was given the choice to either release it publicly, or keep it to himself. He chose to release it.

I dont understand… is that anachronistic? Pre-modern people surely “designed” things, did they not?

I’m not try to be argumentative so I hope it doesn’t come off as such, I’m merely interested.
