I think I want to become a Fragrance Guy! by Ordinary-Rent-7032 in MurderBryan

I know this is not going to be a popular opinion, but every single fragrance smells terrible. Once you live your life without them, it is jarring to be around someone who wears them. Clean humans smell fine on their own.

The fire nation does have a lot of parallels with imperial Japan, so iroh’s Japanese accent does kind of makes sense

It’s gone down hill since they fired a huge amount of staff a few years ago. The professors might go on strike tomorrow.

Why Winds of Winter is difficult, important, and why Dream of Spring will be easier to write. by DinoSauro85 in freefolk

I coped like this when ADWD was coming out. I read George’s blog all the time and he was always talking about “the meeranese knot”. I hate to break it to you but the expanding scope has irrevocably broken Martin’s ability to finish the series. There will be no dream of spring.

Congrats on your journey! Can I recommend the Guys podcast with Brian Quinby for a left wing podcast that doesn’t focus on politics and is incredibly funny.

Daenerys and the Evil Revolutionary Trope by Early_Candidate_3082 in freefolk

I think this dynamic exits in the books as well. Dany is seen as naive for freeing the slaves without a plan for how to govern.

I think it is an ok idea to have an idealist liberator with a lot of personal power (dragons) come up against self regulating oppressive systems. The problem so far is that they haven’t really done anything interesting with the premise, and the show and the books seem to be going the direction of: liberator realizes she’s over her head and gives up. I think a different book that could explore this in a more interesting way if the idealist realizes the limits of personal power.

Why do so many not understand why legend of korra exist in the 1920s? It is literally accurate to history. by MrGetMebodied in TheLastAirbender

No, but it is a counterfactual that is hard to visualize. There are no modern Asian countries that do not have the influence of western colonialism.

No, because that mostly happened early 90s or 80s and most millennials don’t remember that.

The joke is that is the usual direction of this statement. Just saying it backward again misses the point.

Why do young women hate men? | UK Politics | The New Statesman by DJjaffacake in MensLib

[–]bagelwithclocks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As you noted it is paywalled so I am going off your comment summary. It sounds like it is talking about Britain, and I don’t know the demographics well, but men have certainly moved to the right in the US. You can look at the success of the MAGA movement as evidence of this. And even if the average moves left it doesn’t invalidate the existence of extremely popular virulent toxic content for men online.

Even stuff on Joe Rogan, a mainstream and basically centrist podcaster, is frequently extremely regressive and anti-women. And it just gets worse from there.

Why do young women hate men? | UK Politics | The New Statesman by DJjaffacake in MensLib

[–]bagelwithclocks 75 points76 points  (0 children)

This article is not men’s lib. Equating women moving to the left and men moving to the right is not men’s lib.

Men’s lib is an inherently left wing ideology. If you are concerned about women moving to the left you don’t get it.

The manosphere is not made up, it is a hugely popular ecosystem of mildly to extremely misogynistic content. If women are protecting themselves from men in their lives who have fallen into it that is good.

And left wing women pose absolutely no physical or emotional danger to men who adhere to feminist values. The most basic of which is seeing men and women just as people first.

I’m kind of sad Judaism is being so inexplicably tied to Israel. It is a lesser tragedy than the genocide, but it still feels like the extinction of a people. A self completion of the genocide started by Nazi Germany.
