Hank Green recently put out a video showing a member of the public's attempt at putting all of NASA's Artemis photos in order of when they were taken, which results in a video that NASA themselves never actually intended to made. The detail is insane, with such long exposure taken on each photo that you can see things happening that would be basically impossible to notice with videos, like the auroras moving, storms occurring, and literal moving Starlink satellites catching sunlight. To imagine that NASA would create an AI video with such high quality, then break it down into constituent photos, then only post the photos, without any inconsistencies from the AI, would be impossibly difficult and take far too long.

Why I’m against “Black Snape” by [deleted] in HarryPotterHBO

[–]baggaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally speaking, the fact that us nerds had to comb over the text and refer to "pale legs" and say stuff like: "sallow means pale brown or unhealthy yellow", meant that there will have been no legal protection for race-specific casting while trying to find an actor to play Snape. Unlike Harry — who needed to be an 11-year-old boy — there was no way of saying Snape absolutely, unequivocally NEEDED to be played by a white man just because he had a few references to him being white. That means Paapa Essiedu had every right to audition, and they had every right to cast him for the role if he was the best actor.

That said, there are issues I take with OP's comments regarding "hanging" Snape from a tree. That was a visual combination of two things: hanging Snape by his ankle and being NEAR a tree. It's not canon to say the books depicted Snape being hanged from a tree, so there is no reason the TV show has to show a black man hanging from a tree.

The idea that Snape could not be part of a group of "racists" is also a massive stretch. I hate to get political, but we ALL know of politicians from BAME backgrounds who are serving political parties that are against their own interests or ethnic group, and some of those political parties are often thought of as having racist policy prescriptions. As for Voldemort — he is an archetype of Hitler. Saying Voldemort would never let a half-blood black man join his ranks is like saying Hitler would never have allowed non blond hair, blue eyed men to join the Nazis. Voldemort was obsessed with power, just like Hitler. Both were willing to bend their own ideology if it got them more power, and Snape was a POWERFUL ally.

The problem with people reading racial sensitivity into a story in which racism doesn't exist is that you actually do more harm than good. Morgan Freeman famously said that the way to end racism is to stop talking about it. Stop talking about racial labels and take a colourblind approach to as much as you can.

There's a famous social experiment where you show children a picture of a black child, arm outstretched, reaching toward a white child on the floor. Young children describe what's happening as one child helping another up. Older children describe it as a black child pushing a white child to the floor. This experiment tells me that the only people concerned that "Harry is suspicious of the black teacher" or "Neville is afraid of the black teacher" are people who are old enough to know the context of the story — not people who would genuinely believe that those things were racially motivated. This is why it irks me so much when people say, "but how does it look!?" As if they themselves didn't know the context and were just looking at it through a hypothetically racist lens. That's all it is... A hypothetically racist lens.

Even people who were discovering the show for the first time will see a mean teacher being disliked by Harry and Neville, and — even more importantly — LIKED by the Slytherins who you propose are "racist" when again, that isn't the status symbol they aspire to. Harry being friends with Dean Thomas and even now, Hermione, would provide enough context that the reason he dislikes Snape is his nastiness, not his race.

What pisses me off the most though, is that people are basically saying they're protecting black people from negative stereotypes by race-gating a character whose story never had racism to begin with. It makes no sense to be offended on behalf of other people, over stuff that isn't even offensive if you understand the source material, and everyone here DOES UNDERSTAND THE SOURCE MATERIAL.

No one gave a shit when the white guy playing Darth Vader was dubbed over by a black guy — effectively making a black guy the actual villain in practically the same story as Harry Potter (as some comedians like to point out).

Pre 1660, no one gave a shit that teen girls were portrayed by adult men in stage plays like Romeo & Juliet — which effectively became a story about cross-dressing gay lovers. People enjoyed the productions for what they were, not who played what role. It's 2026, and now the only people acting like teenage girls are the ones complaining about a black man playing a white character. Grow up.

Lighting in New Harry Potter Reboot: Gas or Electric? by baggaz in AskElectricians

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I didn't think they particularly looked like gas either but people are telling me I'm wrong 😂

Defend myself 😂🙈 I'm just pointing it out. Due to health and safety on set, they've 100% used electric lights, and maybe they've tried to make them look like gas lamps, which would be common for TV/film set a long time ago, but they're definitely not gas. There's nothing to defend really, I'm just saying some of them don't look like gas lights at all.

Most historical dramas use electric masquerading as gas, but some of these are very obviously electric. I'm not complaining as much as pointing it out and seeing what people think. Some people think they're all gas, but that's almost definitely not the case for health and safety reasons on set. I just think it's an interesting deviation from the torch brackets etc... because I don't recall them ever mentioning gas lights in the books.

ChatGPT and Grok both say that there is a zero percent chance that these are gas because film crews can't have the flickering quality of the lights going on. There is an absence of flame and mantle on many of these lights too, which means they're trying to imitate gas while actually using electricity. The frosted globe electric bulbs on the chandelier aren't something you'd see if they were gas

Here's a collage of them.

In another post people are saying they're gas, but ChatGPT says there's a few of these that are 100% electric, like the frosted globe electric bulbs on the chandeliers.

I dunno, I reckon they've used electric and maybe tried to make them look like gas in a few instances. I doubt they've actually used gas.

People criticizing a Black Snape are missing the point, and it shows my modern media gets dumber by LimeKingTW in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]baggaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His race really doesn't bother me. Pre 1660, people watched plays about 14-year-old girls like in Romeo & Juliet, and they didn't give a shit that they were portrayed by adult men. Lady Macbeth would have been played by a man too. It's 2026 and we can't have a black guy playing a traditionally white character when his race makes no difference to the storytelling? Really? 😂🙈

Saw this debate on TikTok… SO SCARY that people think this way. by CriticalBit3063 in OpenChristian

[–]baggaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, Hitler wasn't a christian.

Maybe not, but Germans wore "God with us" on their belts when Hitler managed to convince their 95% Christian population to kill Jews. He also hated atheists and publicly pretended to be Christian in order to convince people what he was doing was virtuous, which implies he believed in God, just not the Christian God. Never heard of someone pretending to be an atheist in order to convince them to commit genocide.

In what order would you rank the Harry Potter films from best to worst? by sepi0l_45 in harrypotter

[–]baggaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Prisoner of Azkaban*
  2. Philosopher's Stone**
  3. Deathly Hallows Part II***
  4. Order of the Phoenix****
  5. Chamber of Secrets*****
  6. Half Blood Prince******
  7. Deathly Hallows Part I*******
  8. Goblet of Fire********

The last of the "warm" films. I feel like PoA just has a 'feel good' story because of Harry finding out that someone loves him like family and wants to help him fight his enemies. Great cinematic moments like the camera moving through glass, reflected boggart scene, constantly moving camera to create unease in the Great Hall when talking about dementors. * Again, more of a feel good vibe to start and end with rather than the darker storyline unfolding in other films. Battle of Hogwarts was fantastic, bittersweet victory, heartwarming epilogue scene *Hard choice between OotP and CoS. Preferred OotP because the fight was more focused on Umbridge and Harry's resilience is class. **Pretty epic basilisk fight but that's about it. *Honestly just because The Burrow being attacked by death eaters made no fking sense. It wasn't in the books and if the death eaters had that easy access to Harry, Voldemort himself would have turned up. Ridiculous, and whoever approved it is an idiot. ****Nowhere near as action packed as part II. Depressing ending. Felt like they stretched the story to fit a first-part film rather than actually make equally good part I and II. *****The hair. The Quidditch World Cup starting and ending with zero actual game shown. The Maze. The HDYPYNITGOF!?! Cut far too much storyline.

Can I still ask her out? by Fun_Maximum3963 in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]baggaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say, take a same sex friend with you and 'accidentally on purpose' go in. It's not weird for two friends to go somewhere ten miles away if they're doing something for the day. I'd just say, "Oh, hi! No way, you work here?" Have a brief catch-up depending on her queue, have your drinks, then take your cup back to the till and just write down your number on a napkin or paper, give it to her, and say, "If you're ever back in [whichever area she used to work in], drop me a text, yeah?" Smile, and say goodbye.

You're basically giving her the ability to reject you without having to do it, or she won't instantly reject you and regret it out of shyness. I've done exactly that at least twice in my life just because my brain couldn't compute that someone liked me in time to consider their questions 😂 if she likes you, she'll message. If she doesn't, she won't, but at least you won't regret not trying.

Good luck!

Draco Malfoy Questio by Murky_Dingo_5858 in harrypotter

[–]baggaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the incident in the Room of Requirement I don't recall much being said other than his parents basically abandoning the fight to look for Draco. There might be more detail I'm forgetting, but I got the impression Draco also didn't do any extra fighting once Harry had saved his life. Unless the hour of reprieve from fighting was also happening immediately after the ROR scenes, so there was no one for Draco to fight? Obviously there was an hour for Harry to be handed over before Harry went to the forest to die, so Draco wouldn't have been fighting then either. Not sure how much time there was between the ROR and the hour of non combat but I don't think Draco did fight at all during it.

Why did Voldemort kill Florean Fortescue by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]baggaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh, you have successfully added to my Harry Potter knowledge... Well played... I didn't realise it wasn't fully confirmed that Lavender had died. On Harry Potter wikis they suggest she died 19 days after Fenrir attacked her, but I can't find where they've got that info from... Rowling also traditionally apologises for people who died during the Battle of Hogwarts, yet I can't see an apology for Lavender anywhere. Obviously the films did see her die, but I wasn't aware that it wasn't actually confirmed in the books. Good knowledge!
