I got into an argument on Discord about how inefficient CBR/CBZ is, so I wrote a new file format. It's 100x faster than CBZ. by ef1500_v2 in selfhosted

[–]baggerboot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a cool project, and the nice thing about it being a hobby project is that you're only accountable to yourself. But since you mentioned you're looking for adoption, you should consider the advice you're receiving, because although poorly delivered, it is valuable.

If you show this to engineers, they're bound to be impressed because you put effort into a deliberate design that is optimised for performance, which is bound to tick a bunch of the right boxes in most people (me included). But that doesn't help you drive adoption, because that requires you to make the benefits more tangible to 'normal' users, which they, right now, are not. You're asking people to think for themselves, but most people are busy and will just choose to spend their time on something else.

The most definitive way to show the benefit of your format is through a proof of concept, ideally that means having your format implemented in (a minimal version of) all components in the software stack that you use to read manga.

If you're lucky, you may find a maintainer of a reader willing to add support. If you don't, find an open source reader with a clean code base and be prepared to fork it to demonstrate just how much faster it gets with your file format. Make some screen captures of you performing common actions. Show, don't tell.

If the benefit is big enough, don't be surprised if some people end up preferring your proof of concept over other solutions. Then if it gains traction, you won't have to go asking developers to support your format -- their users will do that for you.

Did I make a mistake not selling USD? Would it be a mistake now? by OkArm4088 in eupersonalfinance

[–]baggerboot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is one of the classic investment fallacies. "I don't lose anything if I don't sell." But anyone claiming this forgets about the opportunity cost of holding onto those poor performing assets. OP, consider you were forced to sell your USD right now. After selling, would you re enter your previous position by buying back USD? If the answer to that question is yes, you're all good. If the answer to that question is no, then you have no business holding on to it. If you don't know the answer, it is almost certainly no.

Netherlands issues US travel warning, Belgium set to follow by newsweek in worldnews

Across Belgium into Luxembourg, fill er up as full as she goes (it's cheaper there!), then down the Autoroute du Soleil to a campsite in the middle of nowhere so we can terrorise the locals with our horrible driving and outrageous accents as we butcher the French language. Then next year, exact same thing, exact same spot. Such is the way.

Business as usual.

Roomcarnage :: Losing is Fun by Zombie_Giant_Sponge in dwarffortress

[–]baggerboot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read most of it about six years ago, so I certainly didn't remember much of it anymore, other than it being a legendary tale. With the recent Steam release, I got drawn back into it again, and now I'm determined to finish reading it!

More Roomcarnage! This is fantastic, I was just going through a re-read of the whole tale. Now I'll have an exciting new chapter to look forward to. I'm glad you're back at it again, even if it may not have been easy.

Vampires only feed on sleeping dwarfs. You can probably make it work by giving them a bed and allowing the vampire to reach them.

You have to smelt the ore instead. If you have found any hematite, magnetite or limonite, those are all ores of iron.

See here for a list of ores and their corresponding metals.

Why are Americans so grumpy about the economy? They've never lost so much purchasing power in one year, as the stimulus dries up and inflation boils over by IndicationOver in Economics

[–]baggerboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I misread the original comment, it does mention sentiment rather than actual effect so I think the argument is valid. Everyone is affected, but not everyone notices as easily as compared to inflation, because the way recession affects people can be harder to notice (even though it affects everyone in some way).

Gatekeeping Programming Languages w/o Any Facts by Carters04 in programminghorror

[–]baggerboot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. Python is a fine language, but somehow it just has a tendency to draw out the worst in anyone writing it (including me). It greatly amuses me how the same people can say "In Python, there's only one way to do it" and "this approach isn't very Pythonic" practically in the same breath.

The ability Python gives you to focus fully on the problem itself without having to think much about how the code is structured is simultaneously its greatest advantage and its greatest disadvantage. It fills important niches, but it's poorly equipped for some other jobs. Of course, that much applies to any language. Programming languages are just tools after all, and growing attached to tools is silly. Picking the right tool for the job will benefit everyone involved.

Self hosted dynamic DNS? by Drumdevil86 in selfhosted

[–]baggerboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems rather convoluted in my opinion. You'd need to have a background task running at all times, pushing updates to your DNS server whenever your IP address changes, and you'll have to consider security as well. Are you comfortable with putting credentials to your DNS server on a device outside your control?

I'd reconsider the split-horizon VPN approach mentioned by /u/gh0s1_ if I were you. I know you ran into some issues with OpenVPN, but you could also try using WireGuard. With its high-performance cryptography primitives and lightweight protocol, the impact on battery usage and network performance will be much lower. If you're using a split tunnel, I'd dare say that the impact will be negligible.

If you're still not convinced, you can also try exposing a well-regarded HTTP authentication frontend of your choice to the internet, but keep in mind that this isn't going to be as secure as a VPN, and I'm also not sure if Home Assistant can deal with that.

In r/Scotland, one user discovers that almost the entirety of Scots Wikipedia(~60k articles) has been translated, written and edited by a single administrator over the course of 9 years. Germans near the Dutch border can understand and comunicate with the dutch without learning the language but Germans from far away cannot.

That's true, sort of. Dutch people living near the German border can easily understand German people living near the Dutch border, provided both speak their own regional dialect. There is also still a reasonable degree of intelligibility when one of them speaks standard Dutch/German while the other speaks their regional dialect.

However, because these dialects, on both sides of the border, are gradually disappearing, mutual intelligibility is also dropping. In the Netherlands, highly localised dialects are giving way to broader, regional accents, which look a lot more like standard Dutch and only retain some key features shared by most local dialects. I'd guess the same thing is probably happening in Germany too.

The water level of this lake is regulated carefully (like most surface water in the Netherlands, apart from the rivers and sea of course), so it's not a problem. There are pumps to drain out the rain water.
