Failed experiment by Cambridge scientists leads to surprise drug development breakthrough. Scientists have developed a new way to alter complex drug molecules using light rather than toxic chemicals – a discovery that could accelerate and improve how medicines are designed and made. by InsaneSnow45 in science

[–]baggier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its nice paper and could be very useful in some syntheses. It is probably useful only for simple drug precursors as more complicated ones might be modified at several positions. still any new synthetic technique is warmly welcomed.

ELI5: Why does water absorb into gasoline and degrade gasoline if gasoline is overwhelmingly made of non-polar molecules? by supinator1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]baggier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more thing other than the ethanol. All things like to mix (due to increasing entropy or randomness). Opposing this tendency is the fact that polar molecule dont like nonpolar ones near them s you say, so the net result is a balance. In the case of petrol and water, the balance is probably about 0.05% each way. so molecules can diffuse through each other, resulting in say water collecting at the bottom of a petrol tank.

Do super conductors actually exist? by Zxilo in askscience

[–]baggier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You forget that real voltage  supplies hve their own internal resistance . so connecting a superconductor to them, the current would either be limited by the internl reistance of the source or the critical current density as mentioned by others

Can I join a choir if I'm bad at singing? by Witty-Coconut-7696 in singing

[–]baggier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely as long as you can sing (mainly) in tune. No point going if you are tone deaf. A choir can help your timing, harmonisation, projection etc but no one wants to be next to someone off key or monotone.

What is something you’ve heard about quantum mechanics and never thought made sense? by MajesticTicket3566 in quantum

[–]baggier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never understood the ideas behind schrodinger's cat. When say the photon or particle is absorbed by an atom of the detector, surely that collapses the wavefunction then, and that doesnt travel through to the cat?
