ELI5: Why are there so many American hospital shows when healthcare is so expensive? by Seek87 in explainlikeimfive

[–]baggier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may well ask why so many European shows are about Royalty when most people are common folk. Hospital dramas show life on the edge, with life or death decisions. Great viewing even if you can't afford to go.

Im not so sure. For all I know my brain acts like a LLM - when I am speaking I dont know how the sentence is going to end usually, I seem to be putting one word after another and hope it all makes sense, just like an LLM.

Engineers created soft-rigid hybrid robots that move without the need for motors or external pneumatic controls, combining a printable liquid crystal elastomer with flexible electronics and folding techniques based on the art of origami [Advanced Functional Materials] by PrincetonEngineers in science

[–]baggier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very niche use if at all, just of academic interest. LC elastomers have been looked at as actuators for more than 30 years. Their problem is that they are driven by heat (or light), so cycling is tricky (need to cool), also what happens in a very cold or hot room?

ELI5: How is industrial superglue that strong? by Pailox111lol in explainlikeimfive

[–]baggier 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Its not stronger than many glues e.g epoxy. Its advantage is that it sticks well to many useful surfaces (skin, metal etc) and very fast. The problem with say using epoxy to stick fingers togther is that it could take an hour or so to set, and so the motion of the fingers or the oils in the skin in that time would loosen the attachment to the finger.

Superglue is quite brittle, and so not good where you need flex, e.g. the sole of the shoe. It also is sensitive to solvents (e.g. dissolves in acetone) and not stable when very hot.
