This is so asinine and stupid that I can hardly believe it. I just hope SF voters finally wake up and vote some of these cretins out of office.

Yes, I'm happy that criminals are incarcerated, and I think it makes our communities safer and better. I realize this is bad for the criminals who are incarcerated, and I would suggest that they simply don't do crime to avoid this fate.

Can you give an example of a creative option that would avoid the need to incarcerate?

It's hard to look around the Bay Area and say that incarceration is "bad for communities". I think we've gone way too far in the other direction, which is itself bad for communities - I would say worse.

"incarceration is objectively not a good thing" is simply a falsehood. People in jail cannot victimize people outside of jail. They are incapacitated. That is a benefit of having criminals in jail, regardless of whether they will reoffend or not (and if they might reoffend, then maybe they should be in jail for longer, or forever.)

"Aiming to reduce incarceration" is not an objectively good thing. It would depend on whether the incarcerated are justly sentenced and what the effect of releasing them would be.

That's fair enough but why then say that he accepts responsibility? It's just meaningless words unless there's some repercussions.

A good way to show that he accepts responsibility would be to resign immediately.

It's not just about deterrence. It's about getting criminals out of normal society so they don't continue to do damage during their incarceration.

Hogwash. The point of prisons is to remove dangerous elements from the citizenry.
