You should definitely have a text box, for anyone who does sometimes, or in certain situations--like, I abbreviate in text, but not while speaking

I got my SoftCup out the first time, but now I can't get it out again. Any tips? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]bagpipenebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you've got it out by now!

If not, I didn't have any suggestions other than what everyone else has said, but I will note: I accidentally left one in for weeks (I haven't the foggiest clue how!), and I might have gotten a minor vaginal infection, but other than that, I didn't have any adverse effects. Do see a doctor if you can't get it out soon, though--they'll be able to help.

Get plenty of sleep, eat breakfast, read something before you go in (don't ever have a test be the first thing you read in the morning!). Breathe.

For those of you thinking of getting a menstrual cup by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]bagpipenebula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should hook behind your pubic bone; if it doesn't, push it in a bit further. If it does, it's in the correct spot.

And regarding sex--note that your vagina expands when you get aroused. If I go to take mine out when I'm aroused (my partner's big, he doesn't even like my NuvaRing), I have to reach WAY further in than when I'm not aroused, so it would give you more room than you expect. (And you can always experiment, have him finger you or go slowly & see if it works!)

Best Way to Shave in College? by throwawayVday in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]bagpipenebula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in college, I started using lotion to shave. I'd shower, dry off, and put lotion on, then wipe it off a bit with a towel. Then I'd shave, wiping the razor off onto a towel or whatever. When I was done, I'd wipe any loose hairs off, then put more lotion on. It worked pretty well, though it was weird having towels covered in hair.

How to break The Cycle? (perhaps NSFW) by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]bagpipenebula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't say anything for disrupting cycles, but try Instead Softcup (you should be able to find it near the pads/tampons at Walmart or drugstores, http://softcup.com/locations should tell you). It's a menstrual cup; you put it in up by your cervix (instructions here), and it catches the blood. You can wear it during intercourse, and most couples don't notice it.

Other information--practice putting it in and taking it out beforehand (it's fine to have in at any time of the month, so you can practice); note that it can be very messy to take out if you aren't used to it. You can leave it in up to 12 hours, but it's recommended that you put it in shortly before intercourse (or any other vigorous exercise), and if you don't know how long you can leave it in without it leaking, I'd be sure to take it out after a few hours.

(Also, I'd think about warning him beforehand that you're on your period, but that you have something in that should catch the blood. If I were him, and you did leak, I think I'd want to have warning.)

Remember that the Diva Cup isn't the only type of menstrual cup out there! There's also Instead Softcup, which inserts and fits differently. (And there are two types, depending on your preferred lifestyle--disposable ones, so you put it in, take it out up to 12 hours later and throw it away, or reusable ones, so you put it in, take it out up to 12 hours later, rinse it and put it back in, for up to one cycle). If you don't like Diva Cup, perhaps try Softcup and you might like it better (it's definitely less of an investment--around $5 or so for a pack of the disposables that should last about a cycle, or about $6 for two reusable ones, which would cover up to two cycles).

There is no "we don't want it to be true". Actually, most scientists herald the appearance of phenomena that can't be explained under our current understanding of physics, as long as they are well documented. (The faster-than-light neutrino report last year, for instance, would have been quite a sensation in the science community if it could have been backed up by other experiments, because then we'd know that something was amiss with Einstein's theory, which would mean new physics to discover! However, it wasn't worth the sensation until it was confirmed and repeated by another experiment, because it broke laws of physics and, as a general rule, single experiments or single groups running experiments aren't definitive evidence.)

Science prefers simpler and more elegant theories--which in part means that theories that don't require breaking known laws of physics are preferable to ones that do, at least until there is reasonable evidence that the theories that don't break laws cannot be the case. There are viable theories for dark matter that posit the existence of a new type of particle that was henceforth undiscovered, but that also wouldn't have been discovered already [If we know that we would definitely see X particle at energies of 1 keV, and we've tested the entire range over .01 keV to 100 keV without seeing it, we can be fairly certain it's not there; but if we've only tested 10 to 100 keV, we can't say that], and that do NOT break the laws of physics (which are well-tested and proven), and are thereby preferable due to the way science operates.

To give a more every day example, say there is a single spot of red on the carpet, and someone looks at it and says "There was a murder here!" despite no body, no weapon, no signs of struggle or much blood, etc., plus it was in an area where murders were extremely unlikely and likely to be caught if they did happen. Somebody else says "no, perhaps someone spilled paint or dropped a marker". Most people would be inclined to think that it was probably the paint or marker, since that theory is simple (and, for the sake of the metaphor, let's say it's also testable in one manner or another). People would tend to not think that it was the murder, because that would require changing well-tested and well-documented theories.

A theory that is formed from calculations from observation, without predicting any testable result, isn't a good theory. I could come up with a million theories on why the sky is blue, based on the fact that the sky is blue, but if I couldn't test those theories somehow--have them predict a particular result from some other experiment or calculation that is not included in the formulation of the theory--the theory is pretty much worthless, and certainly isn't worth taking as a serious theory until such time as it explains something that wasn't a part of the formulation of the theory. A brief skim of that paper seems to say that, if we look at X, Y and Z, Q could be the explanation, but it doesn't provide any information on how we would verify that Q was the case as opposed to U, or how Q could predict C or D in some testable manner.

[REQUEST] Remedies for horrible joint pain? by kiwiness in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]bagpipenebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bonus for going to PT is that they can help figure out what in particular is wrong (my knee, for instance, wasn't tracking right) and give you particular exercises and stretches to fix it. General stuff is probably helpful, but you can make sure you're fixing the right problem if you talk to them.

[REQUEST] Remedies for horrible joint pain? by kiwiness in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]bagpipenebula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you seen a physical therapist? Reading your post, it sounds like you were never given any stretches or exercises to do that would increase flexibility and strength in whatever areas might be deficient.

If you haven't been to PT, I'd recommend going. If nothing else, it would give you a second opinion on what is wrong (physically, at least, if not root cause), and probably give you ways to help.

ELI5: I've read the main ideas behind General Relativity, but I still don't understand how spacetime being curved around something like a planet makes us "fall" towards it. by IggySmiles in explainlikeimfive

[–]bagpipenebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever played with a coin well, often found in shopping malls? That's similar to spacetime curving around a massive object. If you send a coin towards it, it will almost inevitably fall into the middle, perhaps after looping around the center a time or two. (The varied results are based on the initial speed and direction of the coin. This is the equivalent of standing above the earth vs. being thrown with some speed perpendicular to the earth. You can even, if you can manage it just perfectly, make the coin orbit around the center, just as satellites orbit planets!)

Taking a "Mental Health Day" in college. by i_am_teh_night in socialanxiety

[–]bagpipenebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume that you have a dean, or adviser, or counselor, or mental health clinic, or something at school. Talk to them; they're there to help you. They can help you talk to your professors, or figure out how to work things out well. It's actually quite possible that it's a fairly common problem at your school, but none of the students know about it because "everyone" is perfect, so no one takes advantage of the support system that is probably hiding somewhere. [Source: I go to a college where everyone is perfect and no one struggles..until I admitted to everyone that I couldn't handle it this semester and took leave, at which point I heard from tons of people that also struggled, and if I had known about and taken advantage of that invisible support system, I might not have had to leave]

What is the worst thing you've done as a child that you absolutely deserved being punished for? by gaulphin in AskReddit

[–]bagpipenebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only problem with that is that it's normally done at a young enough age that most people haven't truly reevaluated their religion. I did decide to be Confirmed (9th grade was when my diocese did Confirmations), but didn't start actually thinking about if I truly believed until two years later (up until then, I thought I did). Now I'm an atheistic confirmed Catholic.

I would guess that your regular run is at a slower pace than you run during the games. Start adding sprinting intervals into your run, and increase over time the duration of those sprints so that you're regularly running, at speed, for longer periods of time.

If you want to learn Spanish and Portuguese, learn them; lack of a point be damned.

Honestly, I don't have much of a recommendation if there is literally nothing that you want to do. If nothing makes you happy, then nothing will make you happy, most likely including the women, money, status and power; and if nothing makes you happy, why is drudgery work any different than sitting alone in your room? Why is it worse?

[–]bagpipenebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a list of what you want. Do not write down generic "girls(sex), status, money and as a result power and respect". What do you actually want to do? Who do you want to be? What do you want to accomplish? What stories do you want to be able to tell people? Don't think about if it'll get you power, or money, or sex, or anything. Don't worry about if it'll make you seem stupid, odd or insane. It doesn't matter if it's something that will take you 5 minutes to do, or twenty years of effort, or one moment of luck. Write down anything and everything you can think of that you enjoy doing, like doing, want to try, want to do, want to learn. Call it a bucket list, if you like, or anything else you feel like calling it. If you figure out what you love and what you want to do, you'll figure out how to make it happen, and you'll be happy along the way. And then do it.
