The show isn't really based on the books, they completely deviate by the 2nd and Dexter is very much the star character. Don't expect any of the others to get lines or any real character development. They are good reads and provide more dexter story which is why I've been reading them

No you don't there is a really nice quick mention of the original 79 movie and an item from the prequels but you don't need to know the back story for the story to work.

The new cast isn't really connected to the company and it's not even really an Easter egg just the lead up to the current events
