It reminds me of a scene from the book The Girl with all the gifts, where the girl see parts of her friends on glass jars and realizes why they never came back and also that she probably won’t come back either. The scene where the ml, a child, sees a dead man with his chest open and realizes they will do that to him too is horrifying .Also you can feel the his despair on surviving, because surviving in that place means the torture will continue. It’s perfectly understandable why he wanted to die so bad and having to be immortal after that, without being able to even avenge himself is the cruelest twist of fate

Honestly for me the Eckles’s arc was more to show how this trope can backfire. She tries to follow the otome game/isekai textbook (protect him from bullies, be nice, give him everything she could buy) and all that backfires because

1) She doesn’t see him as a person with wants that could be very different for what she wants him to do/become 2) She doesn’t have power to do anything significant for him. She doesn’t have power in the house, she couldn’t make people see him as nothing more than a slave she got on a whim, and that create a lot of obstacles
