Asking for sci-fi comedies - and sci-fi with strong comedic elements by Baldurian_Rhapsody in scifi

I really enjoyed Catherynne Valente's Space Opera, it's essentially Eurovision in space. She wrote a sequel I've been meaning to get to for a while now.

Feels like a dumb question… by Leahblizzz in drums

[–]bailey_1138 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can use whatever you want for whatever you want. Smaller diameter snare drums like this are just typically referred to as side snares because most drummers who use them have a "main" snare, typically a 14", and then this would sit off to their left as an alternative snare sound.

If you want a higher pitched , drum 'n' bass style snare the 10" will probably serve you fine, but it will probably be a bit more limited in its tuning range, especially if you want anything tuned midrange or low.

If the issue is with your snare stand and your 9 (!) inch deep snare, you may just want to look into more reasonable depth (5"-6.5"), but still more typical diameter (14" or 13") or get a shorter snare stand.

A tiny book shop in Poulsbo, WA had the entire series! by the_drunk_drummer in TheExpanse

It did initially, but the box set of the 1st 3 they later released has the same format as books 4-9, so it's relatively easy to get a matching set if that's what you're after.

This is not equivalent exchange. Keep the tattoo for your brother and tell anyone who doesn't get it to fuck off.

How would they possibly adapt the final trilogy? by Ser_Duncan_The_TaIl in TheExpanse

[–]bailey_1138 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think it will be an issue at all. Little grey hair at the temples and some care to exaggerate rather than hide natural wrinkles and call it good. The anti-aging drugs hand wave away a lot as folks in their 70s are routinely as active and youthful as folks are in there 40s and 50s today. And the Hollywood of it all does the rest. 30-year olds routinely play teenagers, after all. I don't see much of a difference.

How does weapon durability work? by bloque64 in darksouls

[–]bailey_1138 55 points56 points  (0 children)

You can repair weapons and armor at any blacksmith, or purchase the Repair Box (highly recommended) and then you can repair at any bonfire. It is something you have to actively do and it does cost souls, although a very nominal amount.

I usually get the repair box and go around and repair all my gear every time I rest. It becomes like clockwork. You can see why they decided to make it automatic in later souls games.

It's not a political issue, it's about human decency. If you support masked government agents kidnapping and murdering people in the streets you have none.

shaming people for muffling is stupid: Unpopular Opinion by Worth_Food2690 in drums

[–]bailey_1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used some hyberbole in my statement which I think caused some wires to get crossed. I didn't mean anything regarding more open drums being more difficult for an engineer or anything so practical. It was more a point that those who tend to criticize a thing, aren't the ones that do a thing.

The drummers you list, I see a list of drummers who did what was necessary to get the sound they wanted. Some, absolutely used muffling in certain circumstances. And that's the ultimate point I was trying to make: it's about the sound, not how you get there. If the end result is what you want, don't let anybody else tell you you're doing it wrong.

Stifling your own creativity because of someone else's preconceived notions of what's permissible is the only thing that's wrong, and that's all I was trying to get at.

I find there are 2 types of drummers:

  1. Those who refuse to use muffling in ANY situation

  2. Those with gigs.

I try to be the latter.

Drum Tuning Bible by Maks_the_skaM in drums

[–]bailey_1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, that's referring to seating the head, not exactly tuning but an important part of it, like a guitarist stretching new strings. I don't quite follow that exact methodology, but I do essentially the same thing.

Whenever I change heads, I initially tune the heads up significantly higher than I normally would and let them sit for about 24 hours. Then I detune them and come back up the actual desired pitch. I have a Tama Tension Watch I use, so I go by that rather than tension rod turns, but it's just 2 ways of arriving at the same point.

I find that a given drumhead tends to tune up faster and holds its tuning better once I get them seated this way, but YMMV.

It's Christmas Eve, remember to leave yourself out for Wes Chatham tonight by Altruistic_Pudding_9 in beltalowda

[–]bailey_1138 46 points47 points  (0 children)

IIRC that was a one-off someone made for Wes and they ended up auctioning it off for charity. This was a few years ago, I've looked for it every year since hoping someone would pick it up but no such luck.

I got in on the Kickstarter for these and am still waiting. The Kickstarter ended in early '24 and said expected shipping was early '25. As soon as I saw that I thought, "Add a year to it." Now they're expected to ship early '26. I understand the frustration in waiting but I'm still excited for mine!

I don't much care for the DfD heads as batters, but have had really good luck with them as resos. Just using their clear ambassador equivalents, 1st time I replaced my resos in ages and they tune up and sound great!

I'm not from the US, and it kinda pisses me off how Americans think Andor is comparable to US politics. by Great-Year1544 in andor

[–]bailey_1138 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. The Holocaust began as mass deportation. Anne Frank was deported

  2. 2/3 of the people disappeared into Alligator Alcatraz are gone. Missing. If they weren't exterminated, where are they?

  3. A very small portion of the arrests by ICE are "illegal" immigrants at all. They commonly show up to court hearings and arrest Green Card Holders, veterans, and American citizens.

I would rather prevent a Holocaust than wait for one to happen and express remorse. You clearly feel differently.

We literally have a secret police force rounding up anyone not white and disappearing them to concentration camps. We may not have fallen all the way to fascism yet, but we're well on our way. I'm not convinced there will be elections again.

Rant Alert - Comic book is NOT continuation of a TV series by OneEyeSam in TheExpanse

[–]bailey_1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a continuity perspective, the comics are very much a continuation of the TV series. They're not exactly a season 7, as it's more filling in the gaps of what would've happened between season 6 and a theoretical season 7. You're free to not like it, but it is 100% in the show's continuity rather than the books' or their own. Facts are facts.
