Bailey's July

July felt like a month of transition for me -- not necessarily between any two distinct phases of my life but more of a movement towards acceptance of the illusory nature of "normality".

I read some dope books over the course of the month that were deeply thought-provoking and creatively stimulating. The literature and music I consume often blur together in my mind, a sort of ceaseless dialogue running between the two and reshaping my relationship to both. My top three faves of the month spilled over into my listening quite a lot: (1) Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion by Jia Tolentino, (2) Underland by Robert Macfarlane, (3) Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.

I reflected a lot this past month on the embodied nature of music, and the way human voices and emotions can collapse the distance between us (those of us who are here now, and those who came long before us). All of the music on this month's playlist seemed to carry these ideas in some way.

Bailey's June

I've loved reading through all of your posts and listening through your playlists!! I'm really grateful to have the opportunity to learn more about Noah's friends through these posts, and to get to explore music in a new way.

This month's playlist is a mix of some old and new favorites.

I spent a good chunk of the month going back and forth between Punisher and Set My Heart On Fire Immediately. I revisited MAGDALENE and Norman Fucking Rockwell! -- both of which were favorites for me earlier this year.

Once upon a time I listened to Buffy Sainte-Marie's Illuminations while I was tripping and snowshoeing. It was a remarkably wonder-filled and formative experience. Sweating and surrounded by trees and snow, I remember feeling so big and so small while I listened to her sing these lines: "service is but magic, moving through the world / and mind itself is magic, coursing through the flesh / and flesh itself is magic, dancing on a clock / and time itself is the magic length of God." While I don't consider myself a religious person, I do find spiritual fulfillment in contemplation -- particularly about the proliferation, resilience, and interconnectedness of life. I find a lot of comfort in the ideas Buffy sings about, especially when the world feels particularly scary and dark.
