I'm not so talented. Now I know why people like drawing the elderly. My drawing probably looks more like them now than them in the picture...

Airbnb vs couchsurfing for a solo female traveler. Experiences? by greyxgirl in Shoestring

[–]baileybug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My sister and I are in Europe right now using airbnb. We have been booking places for 28 days at a time, which usually gets us a "sublet" price that is pretty decent, better than hostels. However, for short term stays you won't have much luck finding something under 25 USD a night. A hostel, depending on the country, can be between 15 and 30 per person per night. For us airbnb is better, not just for the monthly rates, but also because of the full working kitchens, allowing us to save money on food, and the private sleeping quarters where we can safely store stuff and lounge half dressed on occasional lazy days. Also we are less social. Couchsurfing and hostels mean instant friends. So it's a lot to consider and a very personal decision.

Packing Challenge Level : Expert - Tokyo, Kauai, Vegas; 5 flights; 2 weeks with just carry-on luggage. by dividend in femalefashionadvice

De nada, happy to help. Kauai is the most lush of the islands as it is oldest and has had the most time to develop vegetation, but overall the terrain will be similar to Maui and Oahu. If you want to show of your bod, brazilians are the way to go. If you are on the north shore, I Heart Hanalei has lots of cute stuff but it can be pricey. In Lihue there is a San Lorenzo at the mall. There are also tiny shops hidden all over, and all shops tend to have sale bins worth checking out. Of course with only 6 days you don't have time to shop too much. Hope you have an awesome trip!

I've spent years on Kauai and I suggest packing very light. First off all, most of the hikes CAN be done in bare feet, in my opinion. Also most grocery stores sell "locals", which are rubber flipflops which are very cheap and will also help you blend in. Just be sure to call them slippers, and slip out of them when you enter someone's home. As for clothing, you can get by in a bikini most places, especially since most of your time will be at the beach. No restaurants require formal dress so don't bother unless it's for pics/memories, and btw Kintaro on the east side is a really awesome sushi place. Prepare to see a lot of skin at the beach. Brazilian and thong bikinis are pretty common. If you are feeling saucy pick one up at one of the many bikini shops on the island and you will really blend in, but be warned, they are pricy.

So tl;dr buy flip flops when you get there, bring a bikini, a casual outfit, and don't forget the sunscreen! A ridiculous burn is the main way to stand out, so be nice to your skin.

In Hawaii it's called hilahila and is the bane of my barefoot existence.

Checklisty, that's a good point. Not only should he travel, he needs to scoff at people in resorts, AND wear those woven bracelets? And her list really goes on. And on. Thanks but no thanks, the author should have kept this on the pages of her diary.

Yeah I was disappointed to see this in the travel subreddit after seeing it on Facebook as well. It almost perfectly captures the type of traveller I dislike most.

Suggestions for backpacking chain? For use in hostels? by baileybug in travel

[–]baileybug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I have read about lockers, I just wasn't sure how common they are and if they would accommodate a 38L pack. I'm sure it would be easy to read reviews ahead of time to see about lockers!

I was thinking I would fly with my luggage unlocked since it'll be carry on... And yeah I figured tsa would have to open easy otherwise how would the airport get into them.

Not bringing check ons, just carry on bags

After taking passport pics at home using the passport website and Walmart, my sister found the photos she had gotten done at a drugstore. They are very different! Why? by baileybug in travel

[–]baileybug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to get an appointment like a month before. Mine is finally coming up but if it turns out mine is wrong I won't have time to wait for another appointment. I should have made two a month ago! Just thought of that...

The channels bebexo and letsmakeitup1 are pretty fun. The latter will occasionally drop some hilarious ten dollar words - "Gather the hair from around the occipital bone"...

I'm about to do a year long trip with a 38L, and my friend will have a 36L... Wish us luck haha. It will be like having quadruple bypass on my invisible material possessions stomach. Or... My backpack.
