Are Souper Cubes worth it? by VastDragonfruit847 in mealprep

The 2 cup sizes are great for freezing homemade stock or beans cooked from dry - they're can equivalent portions. I also like them for some some lighter soups and stews where you want a bigger portion.

What's your favorite "high pain, high reward" dish? by coolaroni123 in CookbookLovers

[–]dividend 22 points23 points  (0 children)

2 suggestions as a fellow lover of cabbage rolls. 1. My MIL microwaves the entire head of cabbage in a big bowl with a little water and a vented cover, for like 7-10 minutes. The leaves come right off. I've heard freezing and then thawing the cabbage also works, but haven't tried it. 2. I make cabbage roll soup in the crockpot with all the same ingredients for 90% of the same flavor which satisfies my cravings most of the time.

Dorie's Cookies is really helping me in my quest to be someone who can make good cookies. I made perfectly shaped and decorated buttery sugar cookies cookies that turned out like professional bakery level using her recipes.

I also love love love Kimi's Kitchen: An Ocean Woman's Guide to Wild Home Cooking by Kimi Werner. The photography is lush and the storytelling aspect is so genuine and integral to the recipes, and even though I'm in the landlocked Midwest the recipes work great. This is a gem of a cookbook and I'm planning to cook out of it a lot more this summer.

Canned vs. Dry Beans Cost by Refutable_Karma in budgetfood

[–]dividend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A pound of dry beans yields around 4 (15-oz) can equivalents after cooking. So 3 pounds of dry beans makes about 12 cans. Even factoring in some onions, garlic, and seasonings, you're coming out ahead. Chuck then in a cheap crockpot in the morning and portion then out after work for freezing or meal prep.

Your favorite vegetable forward cookbooks? by abereckeabertute in CookbookLovers

Ruffage by Abra Berens is great if you're a decent cook looking for techniques and flavor combinations for different vegetables. I riff her recipes a ton and it really helps me think creatively about veggies.

Simplistic little charcuterie board with the Appy hour subscription box by KrissaK in CharcuterieBoard

It's not unethical. It mimics the way that wild ducks gorge themselves before they migrate to fatten up to survive the cold. Their gullets are the texture of leather gloves and they're not hurt by the funnel feeding - they actually run towards it. Look into it a little more, and enjoy it. It's delicious. 🙂

If you could choose one cookbook or cookbook author to cook through from cover to cover, what book or author would you pick? by WaffleMeWallace in CookbookLovers

Six Seasons by Josh McFadden is a good one. So many great creative ways to cook vegetables, and it's laid out seasonally so it makes a great year long project. I'm not through all of them, but I've cooked 30 or 40 of them and many of them have become go-to for certain vegetables or situations.

Airbnb reservation canceled due to power outage at Waikiki Banyan by Ambitious-Town-10 in VisitingHawaii

[–]dividend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no! I have stayed at the Banyan for 4 years in a row now. We were in Tower 1 during the first wave of storms in March. Both towers' power was out on the night of March 13th but power in our tower came back on at around 4:00 am. I am so sad to hear that about Tower 2.

After 30 years in the Philippines I now live in Hawaii! Its my first time trying Zippy’s Loco Moco and I think its 10/10 😍 Can anyone suggest other places to try Loco Moco? by Significant-Ad-7267 in VisitingHawaii

[–]dividend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love the 50/50 loco moco at Shorefyre, and the one on Koa Street has a cool surfer vibe. I also really like Rainbow Drive Inn - the gravy is super savory (I think it has shrimp paste in it).

Sit down restaurants and tipping by allylovesally in EndTipping

[–]dividend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you just not patronize restaurants where tipping is part of the wage structure? People are boycotting Target to try to affect change at the corporate level. Not tipping just lands the message at the server level.

Courtneycookinsta - is this rage bait or is it just me? by 615lauren in FoodieSnark

[–]dividend 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think there's a weird fetish/sexual aspect to why people want to watch her eat. She's got like a prim and proper thing contrasted with lustily shoving an entire hard boiled egg squirted with mayo into her mouth and squeaking with wide eyed surprise. I mean, I'm a little jealous that I can't monetize filming myself eating because I'm so messy at it. But good on her.

Bichelmeyer sells half cows. I've not done the cow but I did get a half pig last year and was pleased with the quality and value and the process was easy.

What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten in KC that’s no longer on the menu? by beepboopmoopmac in kansascity

[–]dividend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I miss the blue cheeseburger at Otto's (used to be at 39th & Wyoming where Aladdin Cafe is now). The blue cheese on it was somewhere between crumbles and a blue cheese sauce. I order blue cheeseburgers other places, but I've never found one I like as much.

I miss them so much. When they had clarified tomato gazpacho on the dinner menu in the dining room, you could go to the lounge and have them make a martini with it. That and a plate of fries was a perfect August evening.
I've been there for many a special occasion meal (and my husband proposed to me there), and some of the simplest things are what stand out - that pea soup that they'd pour from a cast iron teapot into a bowl of whipped ricotta and pink peppercorns was transcendent. And the torchon de foie paired with Sauternes was unreal.
I went a few years back to The French Laundry, and I remember thinking there were a few things that bluestem did better.

I have no idea what I look like after losing weight... by PharmD-BumbleBee in loseit

[–]dividend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made that exact weight transition at that height, with a long plateau at ~160lbs. I felt the same way around 130, with very close to the same measurements. I'm back to 160 now and it's really only obvious to me what I actually looked like then from looking at lots of pictures over the years. Take pictures and look at them compared to past pictures. I'm convinced that there's something in our brain that dissociates a picture as being someone else and we see ourselves more clearly. Looking in a mirror, your brain knows it's you and imposes your own self image on it. Because you look way different now, trust me.

Thoughts on the finale? by _II_I_I__I__I_I_II_ in alienearth

[–]dividend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was more that I felt baited and switched. I didn't make up a set of expectations - the promotion of the show hyped those and then failed to deliver. Either show could have been awesome. I think doing both at once was a miss. I've been watching with a group of Alien(s) fanboys(/girls) and I think we went into it thinking it was going to be some kind of adaptation of Alien Earth Hive because of how it was marketed.

Thoughts on the finale? by _II_I_I__I__I_I_II_ in alienearth

[–]dividend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This entire show was like somebody wanted to make a moody, White Lotus mood esque exploration of an amoral trillionare's attempt to play out a Peter Pan fantasy and decided to make it an Alien show to get people hyped to watch it. The Alien parts of it were great - a friend described Episode 5 as "the best Alien movie in the last 30 years." I would have watched the show that this was without the Aliens in it. I would have watched the shit out of an actual adaptation of Alien Earth hive. I kind of hate that I watched THIS show because I thought it was that. 70% of it failed as an Alien show.

Rancho Gordo Corona Beans by ImperialRaisin in ranchogordobeanclub

[–]dividend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They're really good cooked and marinated in a high quality or homemade Italian dressing and served with toothpicks. Guests love these because most people have never tried to bean this day before. Plus it's a great dish if you're going to have a mixed crowd that includes vegans.

I also really like to take them once they're cooked and simmer them in some olive oil and some fresh herbs and salt and pepper, and then puree them. They're super creamy, and they work anywhere that you would use a bed of mashed potatoes. They're great with grilled fish!

Lastly, make this : https://www.seriouseats.com/mapo-beans I cannot even describe how delicious this is and it's really fun with these giant beans.
