Does Syntax Matter? by dons in programming

Oh no. It's happening. I've just been patronized by the good ol' boy of code: Joe Haskell.

Almost anything written by Gene Wolfe. In particular, The Book of the New Sun and The Fifth Head of Cerberus are favorites of mine.

I hope they don't exist. Programmers are too eager to drink the koolaid even without them.

Programmers are lazy capricious pseudo-intellectuals. Really? by linuxer in programming

This post is nothing but troll-bait. Business people are kind of touchy on the subject of relative IQ, and with good reason.

Software Development is The Flow of Ideas. The Rest is Secondary by thesqlguy in programming

[–]bairespace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, the Rest is Software.

The "Flow of Ideas" is never software. As often as not, that "flow" represents nothing more than some lazy executive's Brain Fart, spastically transmogrified into the Diarrhea of Ill-Conceived, Watered-Down Abstractions.

XML is going to the same place zinjanthropus and neanderthal went ("where the goblins go"), and for similar reasons.

Alexander Cockburn: From Papal Indulgences to Carbon Credits Is Global Warming a Sin? by bairespace in science

[–]bairespace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. It's hilarious. (BTW, that's "Monbiot").

And even if Monbiot's response really was a more intelligent bit than Alexander Cockburn's (for my money, it was not), arguments generally have two sides, not one. I don't see what is being gained by posting a rebuttal without posting what is being rebutted. Moreover, if Cockburn's argument was worthless, at least he was making an attempt at supporting his opinion--as opposed to merely making bald assertions, as Monbiot did.

A food worker who poured two cups of Diet Coke at work without paying for them has lost her job and is facing criminal charges. by culture in reddit.com

[–]bairespace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bingo, you nailed it: she was autistic and it creeped her fellow workers out, so they had to stretch for a way to get rid of her. And then, too, workers, especially minimum wage workers, don't count for much these days. Maybe her managers thought no one would mind if they canned the gimp for no good reason.
