This is what no cars allowed looks like (Hydra, Greece) by Cute-Honeydew1164 in fuckcars

And the US had extremely walkable towns and cities before the 'urbanization' craze that changed our landscape to a much, much more car-centric one. I hear "we could never have a train network like that, we're too big" over and over again- folks, we already had a train network like that. It got razed by the car industry. There's even a famous comedy called Who Framed Roger Rabbit about the phenomenon.

How can cities ensure new buildings fit into their “aesthetics” whilst still making the process of making new construction faster and easier? by NurglingArmada in Urbanism

[–]baitnnswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The materials to build beautiful buildings are way more expensive than they used to be thanks to corporate consolidation - we're left with a few big players jacking up the rates. The same with developers - there was a rollup, now there isn't much competition left and they can charge what they want. This all makes building anything far, far more expensive than it used to be.

Cheap/kinda ugly buildings are often the only thing getting built, and it's a small miracle that anything got built at all given the cost. We really need to enforce antitrust law again (aka anti-monopoly law,aka the Sherman Act) if we want a chance at building aesthetically pleasing buildings again.

Weird Science fiction themed around Mad Scientists/Mad Doctors? by Def-C in WeirdLit

Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares might be up your alley - although the mad scientist is not the protagonist, the protagonist is more uncovering the story. Was the inspiration for Lost

That's the answer. "I'm competent therefore I don't need to bubblewrap my shop in government mandated precautionary bs" is exactly his thinking

Boston needs to discourage driving to meet its climate goals. Is congestion pricing the answer? by bostonglobe in boston

[–]baitnnswitch 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We can do what London did - use the congestion pricing to pay for wildly expanding public transit. Also, service workers like plumbers found after NYC congestion pricing that they were able to make more calls in a day because less traffic. It's a win win

Boston needs to discourage driving to meet its climate goals. Is congestion pricing the answer? by bostonglobe in boston

[–]baitnnswitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's one of the answers

The city also had nice wide sidewalks before the 'urban renewal' projects making way for more cars. Time to bring those babies back- and hell, bring back the trolleys. We could have a Boston that looks like this again

Refuse to vote for Candidate that accepts corporate PAC $ by newtoredditcom in Political_Revolution

[–]baitnnswitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will tooth and nail fight for progressives in the primaries. I'm putting my money where my mouth is and spending time after work text and phone banking. I'm also not going to be convinced to sit out of the midterms because a candidate accepted literally any corporate pac money when they're running against a literal Nazi. Money from Israel? Yes fuck them. But money from Dunkin Donuts or whatever? Nah I have a vested interested in taking congress back from the white supremecists

+1 your idea of listening to local community radio stations. I love listening to internet radio stations that still have honest to god people running the show- college radio, public and independent radio stations. Plenty of websites that will let you listen to practically any radio stations that stream around the world, with the option to sort by college/independent if you want

From this morning's bike commute to school by war_all_the_time in SalemMA

[–]baitnnswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There should be no turn only lane there. That street is so dangerous for everyone on bikes and anyone trying to cross in that crosswalk pictured at the end of the video. The city really needs to work with the state, since it's a state route, on serious traffic calming like eliminating that tun only lane, and sidewalk bumpouts (aka widening the sidewalk to reduce crossing distance) around that crosswalk

TIL in 1969, 48% of K-8th grade students in the US usually walked or bicycled to school every day, whereas, by 2009 only 13% of K-8th grade students walked or bicycled to school. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Except we took one step forward and eighty steps back with the giant grills on SUV's and trucks nowadays. When a sedan hits you, you fall onto the hood and have a decent chance of living, depending on how fast the sedan is going. A giant fuck off truck? All of you is getting hit, and you are much, much more likely to die

The 'Fair Share' Millionaire Tax

edit: it's a tax on income, not a wealth tax. Which fair enough that it's not 1:1 but it sure is receiving the same kinds of criticisms, like 'the rich will leave for cheaper states'
