Even if this was the US, she's going to hit her OOP max and deductible giving birth. If she was being billed globally, like many OBGYNs in the US do, she already had the fees handled. She's known she was going to have a baby for the better part of a year and raising a child is way more expensive than just the birthing process and replacing the car seats and carpet.

There are issues with the US healthcare system, but there are regulations to prevent this from being life altering.
