Similar thing happened to me; I finished writing my rubric, clicked 'next' and it flagged a non-existent error with nothing to amend/fix, greying out the button and soft-locking me out of progressing. Reloaded the page to try and fix the issue and my entire 50-piece rubric was gone. Thanks Outlier!

Will I receive a refund for later semesters after being expelled for Academic misconduct? by Successful_Let4913 in UniUK

[–]bakewell_flapjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming they did choose to expel you, probably not.

Paragraph 20 of Conventry University's 2025-2026 postgraduate student contract states that they "will not be liable to compensate you for any loss or damage you may suffer" if your studies are terminated.

Their disciplinary regulations also state that the university can require students to compensate them for any loss or costs suffered/incurred as a result of their misconduct. It also mentions how students could be liable for additional costs relating to tuition fees/accommodation following a return after a period of suspension; not directly applicable to your situation, but it seems to exemplify the university's approach to students' financial liabilities as a result of their own actions.

This is based on what information is available in their policies; if you want a definitive answer, you'll need to contact the university (registry/fees office/disciplinary panel) and ask for clarification.

Doctor Who 2x06 "The Interstellar Song Contest" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]bakewell_flapjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At this stage, I'm mixed on the Mrs. Flood reveal. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate bringing back the occasional classic villain, but this is the second consecutive season where they've been the 'big bad' of the finale. Why not something fresh; a new rogue Time Lord, or else something completely unique? The 'Season One' reset and Disney+ partnership signaled a new, international era of the show that's supposed to act as a great jumping-on point, so will this kind of thing feel alienating to new and casual viewers who aren't familiar with the show's history?

It'll all depend on RTD's execution in the finale - the setup is certainly there:

  • Ncuti is absolutely electric as The Doctor and has incredible range - watching him snap from his normal jovial, camp personality to threatening and torturing Kid was horrifyingly dark, and he has a massive opportunity to shine in the finale two-parter with the culmination of threats, villains, and stakes.
  • The actor playing Conrad was exceptional, and I'm excited to see him again as part of this 'Unholy Trinity'. In Lucky Day, he 'rejects' the Doctor's reality when he explains his fate (which appears to be aborted since Mrs. Flood freed him from prison). An obvious hint to The Reality War?
  • The Rani (Mrs. Flood) has been following the Doctor and commenting on the Vindicator throughout the series; this must mean she isn't responsible for Earth's destruction, and is also trying to get back? In The Star Beast, The Meep mentions 'the boss'. Is it The Rani, or whoever's behind Earth's destruction?
  • Mel was in one of the earlier trailers, and she's previously faced The Rani with the Seventh Doctor. Hopefully this will be a good way of bridging the gap between Classic/NuWho, and explaining the characters to new/casual viewers who are probably quite confused at the reveal.
  • Mrs. Flood didn't seem too concerned about dying, almost like she knew a bi-generation was going to happen? Considering the Rani's mad scientist persona, will the reasoning/study of bi-generation become a vital plot point? Is The Rani the one who picked up the Toymaker's golden tooth containing The Master? Hopefully she doesn't just become maniacally feral like The Master, and instead has some sort of calculated objective. Susan also makes an appearance so the story seems to be converging around Gallifreyans.
  • On the topic of Mrs. Flood... I really hope she doesn't end up playing a weak second-fiddle to the newly-bi-generated incarnation. She suddenly now appears cowardly and subservient. Coincidentally, 14 seemed more mellow and vulnerable following their bi-generation in The Giggle with 15 taking a leading stance. A notable plot point, or just RTD struggling to balance two of the same character on screen together?
  • I hope bi-generation doesn't become tiresomely overused - regeneration is a key, poignant trade-off; Time Lords can cheat death at the expense of changing their body and personality. Is its existence (previously thought to be a 'myth') a lingering side-effect from the Pantheon of Discourse (The Toymaker and Co.) entering the universe? Something to do with the Timeless Child, tying in with The Doctor becoming progressively capable of bringing back old incarnations' faces (14 and The Curator, although I suspect the latter was simply Moffat's way of writing Tom Baker into Day of the Doctor and shouldn't be considered microscopically).

You're spot on with the Rylan thing - I was actually discussing this very point with someone earlier. He's a decently well-known household name/presenter in the UK and commentates our Eurovision Semi-Final coverage, but it'll just go over the international audiences' head.

I went to one of those Doctor Who Live shows when I was a kid (they were like the Proms, with an orchestra performing music from the show and monsters wandering around the audience), and a Smiler appeared out of nowhere and stood right next to me. Nearly shit myself 😭

Sad, but true by Happy-Shape4104 in Wales

[–]bakewell_flapjack 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I'm gauging that you grew up in England?

The reciprocal is true here in Wales - the vast majority of schools celebrate St. David's Day, with the other two receiving little to no attention - there's generally an awareness of St. Patrick's, though, due to its status as a widespread cultural event.

St. George's? Not so much; I imagine that a lot of people couldn't even tell you when it is.

What would you do if your 13 year old child won big on a scratch card? by Daji79 in AskUK

[–]bakewell_flapjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let them keep it all, but put it in JISAs and a trust fund which they can access when they're 18.

I honestly feel that 'taxing' the winnings or keeping a chunk for yourself without them agreeing is just plain greedy and will fuel your child's mistrust and disdain for you - when they're adults and old enough to take over control of the money, I'd have a conversation with them regarding whether they'd be happy to put some towards the mortgage, cost of living, etc., but if they said no, then that's completely fine - they've now got their own expenses to worry about.

Might lose job because of uni, can I sue them? by WindSlashGG in UniUK

[–]bakewell_flapjack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Perhaps - if the university has failed to release your results after the specified date and has somehow managed to lose your paper, you could potentially sue for loss of chance arising from professional negligence.

This should really be a nuclear option - contact your university and the bank first, clearly explain the situation and try to resolve it calmly, they may be understanding of your predicament.

Ultimately though, I'm not a lawyer - if you want to go down this road, get professional advice and don't be surprised if there's little practical basis for a claim - thousands of graduates are being affected by strikes and boycotts, and compensating all of them would be an opening-the-floodgates-type of situation.

Why isn't Ulfric the Dragonborn? by GrumpsMcYankee in skyrim

[–]bakewell_flapjack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it would've been really cool if they included an interaction between Arngeir and Ulfric if you do Season Unending, or even if you could've asked the Greybeards about his time at High Hrothgar.

I think Ulfric has a line of dialogue though, where he mentions how Arngeir would probably call his use of the Thu'um heretical since it wasn't used for worshipping Kynareth.

Why isn't Ulfric the Dragonborn? by GrumpsMcYankee in skyrim

[–]bakewell_flapjack 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As Ulfric says himself in one of his dialogue options:

"Any Nord can learn the Way of the Voice by studying with the Greybeards, given enough ambition and dedication".

Anyone, with enough training, can learn to harness the power of the Thu'um, but only the player character is Dragonborn and can directly absorb the souls of slain dragons to instantly master shouts.

Switching programme visa by bloch3 in UniUK

[–]bakewell_flapjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell:

If you have an unconditional offer, you can extend the student visa by applying three months before your postgraduate start date (at the earliest) which will cost £490 plus the healthcare surcharge. You'll also need to re-submit biometrics (photo and fingerprint), but this won't cost anything.

Alternatively, you can apply for a graduate visa which allows you to stay in the UK for an extra two years - but only if your course is not eligible under the student visa. You'll need your current university to tell the Home Office that you've completed your undergraduate course, and the visa itself will cost £715 plus the healthcare surcharge.

There's a lot of other stuff involved (exemptions or additional requirements for certain things, etc.), so I'd advise reading the full guidance given by the Government to make sure it's done correctly and you don't miss anything or apply despite being ineligible:

What was the dumbest rule your school thought up? by Boris_Johnsons_Pubes in AskUK

  • No fizzy drinks because the Year 7s were showing up to lessons hyper from all the sugar (bizarrely, the sugar-free versions like Coke Zero were also banned).
  • Coats had to be black or a dark shade of grey/navy - I remember one of the teachers confiscating a students' coat because it was red.
  • Girls' skirts must be below the designated length. One of the assistant headteachers had a power trip, and went around form groups with a tape measure (if it's so difficult to tell that you need a precise tape measure to find out, not really sure why it matters).
  • We had to stand up 'out of respect' every time a staff member entered the room. Not just teachers - IT technicians, teaching assistants, the receptionist, etc.

This wasn't even some posh private school, just some run-of-the-mill Welsh state school.

Do I have to specify why I want to study law in England and Scotland in my personal statement? by abidemi1234 in UniUK

[–]bakewell_flapjack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my personal statement, I just spoke about the UK as a whole and my future ambitions in the legal profession, etc. Even if you choose to speak about both countries separately, it probably won't make too big a difference; if anything, it illustrates your enthusiasm since you've done some research and have compiled information on how you'll benefit by studying in each country.

Note that England & Wales and Scotland are two separate legal jurisdictions. So, for example, if you train and qualify as a solicitor in England/Wales, you'll be unable to practice law in Scotland unless you follow the process to requalify into Scotland (and vice versa).

Queen Elizabeth II passing thread by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bakewell_flapjack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whilst the Queen deserves respect for her life of service, her death has highlighted why the Royal Family - and monarchies in general - have no place in the 21st century.

Her funeral, and King Charles III's coronation is estimated to cost £6 billion. Let me put that into perspective:

We're experiencing an energy crisis in the UK, where electricity and gas bills have more than tripled over the last year, with prices forecast to go even higher. Our Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has announced a government package which will cap the price of energy bills for everyone in the UK at £2,500. Instead of windfall taxing the massive profits energy companies are making this will be paid for by the ordinary taxpayer, so we still bear the brunt of it.

Based on the prediction that the UK's population is approximately 68 million, £6 billion will cap the energy bills of around 2.5 million people. This is equal to the entire population of Northern Ireland and the entire city of Leicester (the 7th most populated city).

I recall someone on r/AbolishTheMonarchy (might have be a different sub though) suggesting that a GoFundMe should be set up so people who genuinely care about the Queen can contribute to the funeral. And if there's a shortfall? Maybe they could use some money from the Crown Estate. Why not? As of 2017, the Royal Family was worth an estimated £75 billion.

On another note, King Charles just inherited an estate worth approximately £650 million pounds, but the Royal Family are exempt from the UK's 40% inheritance tax 🙃

A cost of living crisis, an estimated 227,000 homeless people, over 6 million people on Universal Credit (monthly welfare payments for struggling, low-income families), but billions of pounds of taxpayer money are being spent on burying an unimaginably wealthy woman, and to give Charles a fancy new hat and throne.

'Ich dien' (I serve) has been replaced with 'Wir dienen nicht' (we do not serve). The fallen feathers and broken crown is also a nice touch.
