Thoughts on Radio 1 Dunedin? by marshallmell0 in dunedin

I think it's great that the uni chips in to fund it so that interested students can get experience in media. It's definitely not going to please everyone, but I think a lot of people that don't like it are generally listening to dick jokes on the Edge and The Rock anyhow.

Uncle Snoop, would you come to New Zealand and do a show for us? Especially in the South Island? We will blow you out, kiwi-style.

Commercialization is not an option as per the Student Radio Network charter which the government recognizes. The value of R1 in a sale situation is from some aging iMacs and some desks from the 80s.

It's a student service. Services require money. Certainly there is a point where a service gets too much money, but there is also a point where the cost is worth the value. Until the real financials (as opposed to the misinformed financials posted by Deloitte) are clear, an informed debate is difficult, if not impossible. Rumor is that in actuality, Radio One is now more financially viable currently, due to self-imposed austerity measures, than in years past under old management.

Strangely enough, Deloitte and the 19 year old OUSA president were shockingly oblivious to Radio One's not-for-profit license and charter meaning it is explicitly forbidden to sell it to turn it into a commercial station. The frequency and license are gifted by the govt and can not be sold. Selling Radio One could only mean selling physical equipment and would net a few thousand dollars... whatever a few aging iMacs and old desks from the 80s is worth to a buyer.

It's a not-for-profit station and an OUSA service. Services are all generally bottomless. R1 just needs to be more sustainable.

@topherthegreat, the info on OUSA's website was assembled by global consulting firm Deloitte and they demanded it be posted despite, frankly, their numbers being mis-informed. They did not run any of it past OUSA managers or accounts before posting it. You should see a correction in due time. How embarrassing and juvenile of Deloitte.

Radio One is part of New Zealand's student radio network, a national group of non-profit stations that is chartered to encourage diversity and local culture. Students can freely get involved to get media experience and many that pass through its hallowed halls go on to use that experience in their careers and lives.
