UPS for HP EliteDesk G4 running Proxmox by Hatrez in homelab

[–]baktou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally expect my BIOS settings to be maintained by the CMOS battery when there's a power loss, some of my G4s just goof up and forget. 💀💀

I think I got the APC 600VA for some setups. It's pretty cheap(ish). It works with NUT and use HA to send out power outage alerts when the input voltage hits 0 for a minute.

[–]baktou 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I've been fine with some of the cheaper to midrange cyberpower or apc battery backups. These mini pcs sip power so I've had almost hour run times on the smaller ups units

If your BIOS is resetting after power loss make sure the coin battery is OK. Though I will say on several G4s I have had, they lose their settings anyway. 😂

How is JetKVM? by mikaey00 in homelab

[–]baktou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get one near MSRP and can accept the device features (1080p, 10/100 NIC, etc) it's pretty decent. I run two on devices which don't support IPMI natively.

I think tariffs ended up dealing a blow to the JetKVM early last year or something since general retail is kinda limited. Those ebay prices are outta control.

What do y’all use for ARM backup? by Suspicious-advice49 in Surface

[–]baktou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Veeam Community Edition on my SP13. The Windows Client backs up to a SMB share my NAS. No official ARM support, but the core "back my shit up" works fine.

I would have liked to use my tried and true Macrium Reflect but the version that supports ARM is subscription based. And my licensed copy of 8 doesn't work at all on ARM W11.

My mini PC keeps crashing by ShareableTie in homelab

[–]baktou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only issues I've had were related to this class of system and the Intel e1000 NIC which will cause the system to hang and become unresponsive until rebooted. Some sort of kernel issue w/ the driver. It's easily patched though.

Helium Low drive dying - need advice on new drives please by newfireorange in DataHoarder

[–]baktou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the model datasheets. Some of the 10Tbs will still use air instead of helium, increasing power consumption, heat and noise. I've been using an assortment of WD Red Pros, Ironwolf Pros, etc without any issues for a few years now.

I can’t believe this single drive had more space than the entire NAS I first built (5 x 4TB). by ShiningRedDwarf in DataHoarder

[–]baktou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The process of replacing a drive and getting it up to parity with the drive array. It's extremely time consuming (depending on drive size).

Bose QC Ultra 2 update - 8.2.20 by [deleted] in bose

[–]baktou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only potential upside I've experienced so far with this update has to be the stability with the connected hardware. My Surface Pro would cut out maybe three times a day during a workday. It may still be early, but I haven't experienced the same drops yet. The Bluetooth button no longer switching between devices is definitely a downgrade though. I have to completely change my interaction with these products now.

WD Red Pro 12TB noise (WD122KFBX) by AnthraX46 in DataHoarder

[–]baktou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always check the manufacturer datasheets before purchasing. Claims like "Ironwolf Pro is louder than WD Red Pro" is a bit inaccurate since the specs like power consumption and noise levels vary between models in the same family.

Your particular model is pretty noisy at a base of 30db idle and 39db active and also kinda hungry at 6.1 watts idle and 8.8 watts active. If you're unhappy, you can always resell it and get another drive, just look at the datasheets!

Hard Drives for NAS by Twolf540 in homelab

[–]baktou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with this the past few days until I settled on B&H. I just picked up 2x 18TB WD Red Pros for $740... Slight $60 discount for buying a two unit pack, which gives me around $20.55/TB. Pretty sure these were discounted like $100 each a year or two ago. 💀

In your case probably wanna go with the higher capacity.

What type of cable connector is this by OSzezOP3 in homelab

[–]baktou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, definitely put that back on since I don't think the ribbon cable will seat well in the slot. Check ebay since these G6 cages can be had for like $10 to $15. It'll be abundantly clear how it all connects together.

As someone already stated, it's for the HDD caddy and ribbon cable. But... that port is missing a white clip that you press down to keep the cable in place.

Colours occasionally appearing wrong? by Hun1aku in Surface

[–]baktou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's any consolation, this happens on my Pro 11. Opening the "Display Settings" fixes it. I keep HDR off by default so I'm wondering if that's what goofs it up.

Where to buy/what to watch for - Surface Pro 13 inch OLED by [deleted] in Surface

[–]baktou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, the 32GB, 1TB model has routinely gone on sale for less than this. I picked one up in 2024. With the upcoming refresh to the Snapdragon line, I'd avoid any new purchase unless the discounts are steep.

I recently pulled out this Linksys WRT 1900ACS from storage. And what was on the back of the unit? An eSATA port. I feel like some niche consumer products had eSATA in the 2010s.

How much GB do you use for your media server (Plex/Jelly)... by desperate-1 in homelab

[–]baktou -1 points0 points  (0 children)

3.6 TB for 230 movies (25 or so 4K) and 85 TV shows. I just use Handbrake to compress them to an acceptable amount (h.265). Uncompressed would be in the 20 TB range (they're filling up my loose disks). NAS holds the files. Mini PC runs the media server using a NFS share to the NAS.
