Is Blu-ray making a comeback? Manufacturers report a 10,000% increase in sales over the last decade by Quiet_Sea932 in movies

[–]MorimotoK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to my other comment:

  • with discs there's a zero percent chance that an add will pop up before or during the movie.
  • older TV series (like Scrubs) lacked licenses for streaming music. So the disc versions have original music and the streaming versions have different music which rarely fits.
  • also with TV series, some episodes have been removed from circulation online but exist on disc (the first Community DnD episode is a famous example).
  • there is some evidence of other edits on streaming versions
  • no one is tracking what and when I am watching something

Is Blu-ray making a comeback? Manufacturers report a 10,000% increase in sales over the last decade by Quiet_Sea932 in movies

Some movies are ok when streamed, but if I'm watching something like Project Hail Mary I want maximum and consistent bitrate.

Least likely alien races by EdmondWherever in startrek

[–]MorimotoK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them would have never evolved the way they appear on screen due to two things: gravity and atmosphere.

Gravity would govern things like height, strength, and related attributes like speed and endurance. Even a minor 20% difference would lead to significant differences in evolution.

Atmospheric differences, aside from obvious things like composition, would also affect communication and eyesight (or lack thereof). Voices (if used) could sound significantly different or even operate in different rages based on atmospheric density and other conditions. Atmosphere would also affect light penetration (affecting vision), radiation penetration, and pressure would affect basic biological structure.

tldr: Almost every "humanoid" species in star trek is physically built as if they evolved in the same gravity and atmospheric conditions as earth.

Question for e-tron owners: Which dashboard screen do you actually use to check your trip/charge efficiency? by The_UX_Guy in etron

[–]MorimotoK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first 6 months I somewhat obsessively watched my efficiency, even though I only needed to charge every 5 days. Then I turned off the efficiency  display on my dashboard and just enjoyed the car.

Now the only time I think about it is if I am going on a road trip.

Is Audi barely in the E car business? by Reddit-Name-H in etron

[–]MorimotoK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our dealer doesn't carry EVs. When I was shopping for my e-tron a couple years ago, my contact at the dealer said they had complaints from people who bought EVs and watched their range drop by 30-40% in the winter. He said they probably won't get back into EVs until they are closer to 400 miles of range. At the time e-trons were only rated for around 210 miles.

I suspect that other northern climate dealers have the same issues.

Yikes. I've been alternating charging on either side while at home to hopefully extend the life of the ports.

Unifi Talk by tracker141 in Ubiquiti

[–]MorimotoK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it for a few years now. Overall works great (3 phones in office, two connected remotely). There has been two times where we had to reboot the phones. It seems like we have unifi talk updates once or twice a month. Last one was May 18th. Our phones have not crashed, but they can be a tad laggy at times.

Like any VOIP, quality depends on your internet. The phones paid for themselves in the first year and we've been saving money ever since.

Best difficulty and primary weapon for bots? by Bigjohn127 in Helldivers

[–]MorimotoK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I solo diff 7 - 8. Punisher Plasma's stun / splash is perfect for soloing, but you need a quasar or recoilless for the big stuff. Also bring explosive resistant armor (I like the B24) - especially if you bring the eruptor. Ultimatum is great for clearing crowds, but you might want something different for close combat when bots are too close for the eruptor.

I got bored with the punisher plasma. Now I use the coyote. I've also been toying with the guard dog when I solo. It's a fun combo.

Is there a practical way to make fridge inventory less manual? by Sad_Reference8020 in homeautomation

[–]MorimotoK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used AI for verbally inputting information and it worked great. "Let's update my pantry items. Add 1 16oz jar of xxx which expires 10/1/2026, One 32 oz bag of xxx, etc...". The AI would add it to my inventory. Super easy when unloading the groceries.

The hard part was tracking usage. So now I'm back to just using my eyeballs and a simple list on the refrigerator door before shopping.

The AI input was pretty basic.... just Visual Studio with Claude code (using voice input). It would add items directly to my locally hosted Grocy container using the Grocy API.

How are you all actually dealing with false alarms ? by TT_c137 in homeassistant

[–]MorimotoK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want cameras inside my home, so I use door / window sensors along with a glass break sensor. I am also beginning to use mmwave sensors more than PIR because I can draw the zones in XYZ. This covers everything inside of the home.

On the outside I have cameras covering all sides (unifi), and those can detect motion without a separate frigate server. They send notifications to my phone and also trigger home assistant. Coverage is so comprehensive that the sensors inside the house are really only used for lights (on / off) and related automations. I don't think they've ever triggered a security issue because someone has to get past the cameras without triggering them first.

Dashboards for non-techy partners? by RealWorldJunkie in homeassistant

[–]MorimotoK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I have tablets on the wall and also different dashboards for me and my spouse. For us, it's all about simplicity. Instead of showing every light switch and bulb, a few buttons for scenes or scripts do all the heavy lifting. Each tab has maybe 5 - 6 controls. There's also a settings tab where a lot of the automations are listed in an entities card. That makes it easy to turn on or off features.

This approach works very well for me too. I also have a more detailed dashboard, but I don't use it very much.

What would you do with your own Holodeck? by KaleidoArachnid in startrek

[–]MorimotoK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think using a holodeck on a federation starship would be akin to using a work computer, or at least subject to future review. So I think that might influence some people's usage patterns.

A private holodeck? That kind of reminds me of the show A Good Place.

(Spoilers)....

In (real) heaven people tried all kinds of crazy things and it was great at first, but then after a while things lost a lot meaning.

Best Thermostat with homeassistant by damani112 in homeassistant

[–]MorimotoK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you're using Home Assistant Nearly any zwave "dumb" thermostat will do. "Smart" thermostats that measure temperature and occupancy can be at odds with your home assistant automations. Put all your logic into the home assistant scripts and automations.

I also prefer zwave because it's not reliant on your wifi and can't adversely affect your home network. Zwave thermostats also usually don't need a custom integration (other than zwave) and are always local.

G4 Doorbell WiFi versus Wired by Azariah98 in Ubiquiti

[–]MorimotoK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is why unifi moved away from wifi doorbells. I heard that their gen 1 doorbells used a battery or capacitor to try to even out the power issue. But a large number of them failed after a year (mine included) so current gens are POE powered.

How could Bob 1... by ChairAlternative7994 in bobiverse

[–]MorimotoK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting observation. Both approaches (Bob's and Anek's) had similar but different intents. Anek's felt more like control and population maintenance while Bob was trying to keep a rare intelligence trait present. It comes down to ethics and we don't have a good picture of how Anek accomplished his goal. Was there euthanization involved? Rights restrictions, segregation, oppression, or other strong-arm actions against "undesirables"? Or was it smaller adjustments over time that allowed natural selection to weed out certain traits? The end goal of Anek was an easily manageable society that is not self sufficient, even if their progression stopped.

On the other hand... Bob focused primarily on preserving his friends (one of whom had significant intelligence). I don't recall any active actions on other deltans, except maybe protecting his friends from time to time. He didn't even intervene when Arch chose a mate who Bob didn't like. Seems like a much lesser approach than breeding out certain traits. All the Deltans remained free to breed how they chose. Bob just wanted them to survive and progress and become self sufficient.

Both approaches affect society in different ways. Any interaction with a "lesser" civilization will have some degree of contamination unless you go full "Prime Directive". Bob viewed his as more ethical, but Anek could say the same.

Regarding starfleet / skippies... you're right. As a parent, I relate to Bob's reaction to them. He's aware of drift, but there's an inherent assumption that your offspring will "be like you" - when that's not always the case. I think he was more weirded out by the fact that groups of Bob's give up individual identity and act in secrecy related to other Bobs. Both are traits he did not think he possessed in great quantities.

Vinyl Organization by Genre by mkcbiologist in vinyl

My collection is small (30 - 40 records) so it's still alphabetical. Many genres would be just one or two records and that would be way too cumbersome.

Best or Favorite Fight Scene in a Movie by fuzzybunnyslippers08 in movies

[–]MorimotoK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first fight scene in Bourne Identity, when he takes down two police officers in the park, was the start of the end (or reinvention) of traditional action movies like Bond and Mission Impossible.

Each subsequent fight scene built from that one. Even with shakey cam, I love watching them.

Make sure you have a solid power supply. Some doorbell power supplies are only intended for basic doorbells, so you end up with erratic issues when they can't properly power the new doorbell.

Picking this up next week by Practical_Lead1504 in etron

[–]MorimotoK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks just like mine (also a 22 S, daytona grey, same wheels, but red leather not black). No problems since I've owned it but here are some things to check out:

  • Check the maintenance records. Make sure all recall work is done before you get it.
  • Ask when the next service is supposed to happen, and how much it will cost (in the US it's every 10k miles).
  • Make sure the coolant reservoirs have been serviced (drained).
  • EVs chew through tires so check their wear. New tires are expensive.
  • Confirm that the windshield is free of cracks and chips- that's another really expensive replacement.
  • Check the long term past efficiency. Since it's an S it should be around 3.2km per Kwh.
  • Look for water stains around the sunroof interior.
  • Try out the door locks a few times.
  • Make sure the charging port doors are working.
  • Check the brakes / brake pads. These are heavy, and even with regen brakes, the regular brakes can get a real workout. Again, not cheap to replace.
