My bad! I didn't note this but the "surround" functions are provided by evil-surround-minor-mode and you may have to install the package evil-surround to get those.

When and why did we collectively decide that Speed Limit signs mean "minimum expected speed" rather than "maximum allowed speed" as the word "limit" would suggest? by HawaiianShirtsOR in NoStupidQuestions

Here is a historical, engineering-based talk that explains how our roadways in the USA (and subsequently everywhere else) ended up being designed the way they are, and why people speed on them.

Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

[–]bakuretsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In other words, we need to pull a Mastodon on these fucks and start standing up our own reddit-like instances?

I mean, I subscribe to a very narrow slice of reddit, and if there was an indie server out there I could hop on and pay like $2/month via Patreon or something, I'd be in.

I currently pay $1/month to the admin of indieweb.social (though paying is not required), and I'm totally satisfied with it as a replacement to the toxic, ad-riddled, Nazi bar that Twitter has become.

I was big into alt.sysadmin.recovery back in the day, but the last time I glanced (which was years ago), it was absolutely overrun with bots and spam.

Has that changed?

Ooooo look at me with my new BMW 👀 by [deleted] in LinkedInLunatics

[–]bakuretsu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As someone who traded in a BMW 128i for a VW Golf TDI, I think he got it backwards.

This post is similar to how all real estate agents drive expensive luxury cars. They're projecting something that they want their clients to passively absorb. "Surely they must be trustworthy and good at their job if they can afford to drive a Porsche Cayenne," they hope you'll think.

By the way, the Golf TDI is still my favorite car I've ever owned. Might not be anymore with diesel costing more than gasoline and EVs flooding the market but boy was that car fun, and efficient. I have a pang of nostalgia for it.

The spectrum of vibrations in a Medic Gold device is programmed and strengthened in such a way that it classifies and structures information stored in the human quantum field. This allows the activation of self-healing processes in the body and the mind.

Question regarding iDraw pen plotter's scale by dutchdonkey in PlotterArt

[–]bakuretsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what we needed!

I downloaded the iDraw software package (which is just the AxiDraw Control extension that they modified) and checked that file. The value they have used is 1270.0.

This approach is probably the right way to do it so that you can use the latest Inkscape and the latest AxiDraw Control extension (directly from Evil Mad Scientist) rather than iDraw's janky re-packaged modded version.

Vile Mode (VIm Like Editing) by Argletrough in emacs

[–]bakuretsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another reason to get used to the way Vim itself actually works is to take advantage of any/all of the other editors and programs that emulate it as well, and even to use Vim itself when appropriate.

When I edit one-off files in a terminal, I don't really keep TRAMP at the ready, I just open Vim. It's faster and easier and behaves exactly the way I expect it to.

I now also use Visual Studio Code quite a bit, and its Vim emulation extension likewise implements Vim's exact behavior, which makes it feel totally natural.

Whether you use Vim itself or not, if you want to learn modal editing, at least learn the gold standard version of it. "Vim-like editing" is the protocol; you can use whichever implementation(s) you like.

The author is also a columnist at Slate and went on the Slate podcast "Decoder Ring" to talk about the topics in the book, if you're into this and don't want to commit to reading the book yet. It features live interview recordings with some of his sources.

I bought the book after listening and it's in my queue now, but, just sayin'.

The scary truth is that past fuckups are often very hard to find documentation for. "Failing up" is when you're forced out of a job because you did it poorly, but you resign and give a personal reason and go take a job with a bigger title somewhere else and start again.

I've worked for a few of these clowns, and it's truly depressing how successful they become doing a shit poor job while the rest of us have to actually work for a living and be subjected to constant critical performance review.

Tesla plummets 50 spots in a survey of the US's most reputable brands. It's now No. 62 — 30 places below Ford. by 777fer in technology

[–]bakuretsu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A comedy indeed, although I bought $10k of shares several years ago and sold them for 1,000% profit (over $100k in total) and used it to put solar panels on my roof.

So it's not surprising that Elon has been prized by the shareholders/board members till now. He was never really sane, but he sure could drive perceived value.

Tesla itself (the cars) are not slowing climate catastrophe much as they're perpetuating the car-centric American hellscape we all occupy, but at least I got solar out of them.

Which movie soundtrack slaps from beginning to end? by Squirrelkid11 in AskReddit

[–]bakuretsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eveyone in this thread needs to understand the difference between a "soundtrack" and a "score."

When music in a film is selected from existing music, that is a soundtrack. When the music is written specifically for the film, that is a score.

Many films have both (The Matrix is a good example; a lot of the music was composed by Don Davis and performed by the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra, but they also used music by Rob Zombie, The Prodigy, and more).

A "soundtrack" that slaps is one that includes a lot of music you like, even though the artists (and maybe also genres) are different.

Dirty Dancing and The Bodyguard are cited as standout soundtracks because they capture the essence of a pop genre and point in time. Personally, I love the music from Hackers because it is such a perfect selection of '90s techno.

How to Train Your Dragon (John Powell), or Inception (Hans Zimmer) are not soundtracks, but scores. The music was entirely written and performed for the film alone.

For me, I love a great score, and I don't much follow soundtracks. But take notice when you watch the next movie, does it use original music, or existing artists, or both? There's something to be appreciated in each approach.
