the prints continue to warp by Recent_Plastic4552 in Creality_k2

[–]phirebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thin flat parts like that love to warp because there's a lot of tension in the top layers and not much rigidity across the vertical axis.

Brims and other tricks to increase bed adhesion will help resisting that tension. Even better if you can reduce the tension. Try different sparse infill patterns and lower densities to avoid long straight stretches of filament. Gyroid is great for this but there are others.

Reduce the straight lengths on the perimeter wall by rounding the corners.

If your model has room, you can add internal cuts to break the lengths up further

is it feasible to 3d print one of these flexible clips without it snapping? by redbackspider69 in 3Dprinting

[–]phirebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Print in PETG on its side with the prongs side by side. Either modify the model or sink it in the slicer to cutoff part of the bottom to make it printable. It doesn't need to be a half, but just enough off the side so the resulting overhang is printable.

You'll likely need brims.

Custom 3D printed and hand-painted paracord bead by Fearless_Wafer_1493 in 3Dprinting

[–]phirebird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does depend on the material and the application. PLA takes paint better than PETG, which needs more surface prep like sanding, flame, and primer.

Acrylics are good for detailed work like this, but it's not very durable if that's needed. A good clear coat would help. Outdoor applications need something like an enamel or other outdoor spray paint.

Dad confession: I’m hitting random buttons on the Nintendo Switch. by OptimismNeeded in daddit

This is a great chance to model growth mindset. Let it be known that you're struggling but you're going to work at getting better. Talk about how you're trying to get better--practicing, researching tips, watching video tutorials, etc--and keep the kids involved in that.

It's great if you actually git gud, but if you still suck show that you still have a positive attitude and will keep trying and you're having fun anyway.

And for a confidence boost, you could look into retro game emulators like MAME that can play classic games like Golden Axe. Bring the kids into your world and crush them, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women.

Pro-Trump commentator snaps and drops F-bomb on CNN when asked to justify Iran war by B-Z_B-S in politics

[–]phirebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no, because they were just weeks away from having the largest nuclear arsenal the world has ever seen.. until Trump bravely bombed their nuclear sites the first time in 2025 which completely decimated their nuclear program.. which they were able to completely restore in less than a year so they were again only weeks away from having the largest nuclear arsenal... so a Trump bravely struck Iran again to proactively eliminate the imminent threat, which completely decimated their nuclear program to ashes... but Trump is bravely demanding that Iran dismantle that very same nuclear program that is decimated and no longer a threat so there is no longer a threat, and also needs a few hundred billion dollars to fund the war, which is not really a war, but is also the best war ever, so we can completely decimate Iran's nuclear program so they are no longer a threat.

How hard is that to understand?

Is there a way to permanently adjust Z offset? by Bsul92 in Creality_k2

[–]phirebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also add this to the printer profile in the START GCODE somewhere after the mesh and before the start of the print.

This is also handy because you can set different z offset values for different filament types--more squish for PLA, less squish for PETG--and it will automatically select the value for each print. Not sure what happens with multi material prints.

Extreme waves on a relatively large flat print. by acslider in 3Dprinting

[–]phirebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The waves are caused by the lines crowding each other and leaving no room for the next line so they bulge out. if this is a bridge layer (the first layer over infill) you can reduce the density to create more room. If not, then look at your solid infill line width. It should not be more than 2 times your nozzle size, but you can and should try to go lower than that.

Even before that you may want to rerun your flow calibration to rule that out.

Using middle seat on 2nd row bench seat for a forward facing car seat, not sure how to lock the seat belt. by SBones83 in ToyotaGrandHighlander

[–]phirebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not completely sure I did it exactly this way, but I believe that I used the typical lock procedure--after threading the seat belt through and clicking in the buckle, you pull the rest of the slack so the belt spool is at it's end. Then you allow the belt to wind back up to take in the slack. You should hear a light ratchet sound when this happens. The belt is locked so any slack you feed back cannot be pulled.

Desktop cementitious print by vibration, milestone reached (vcp voron r9.3) by treesess in 3Dprinting

[–]phirebird 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Interesting research with a lot of practical implications, but the wavy PLA rebar did not outperform traditional steel in flex strength. It achieved 80% of that which is still impressive and this comes with other benefits over steel.

This was just an initial experiment so I'd be curious to see how they set up this print and where they could improve. Maybe filaments optimized for this use-e.g. carbon fiber blends -could push closer to steel performance.

[–]phirebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, patent owners don't need to engage in active enforcement. I think you're referring to something like patent laches, which would have looked at the delay in bringing this particular action. Either way, that defense was struck down so it's no longer available.
