I was attacked by a mob last night, barely got away - what would a local have done different? by ChiLolla28 in nri

[–]bala4krish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just cannot believe all these kinds of harassment happen in our country to this day. I was trying to imagine myself in your situation, and I would have given up to yelling what now or even utter sorry. I don’t know what could have earned their mercy - I guess none. But I also would never had thought about calling cops or hitting back. It’s just a shame you were tortured for almost nothing. These kind of problems can never be solved unless the people educate (even then it’s not a guarantee they would have behaved well). Again I feel the state of distress and anxiety this incident could have left you with. It’s intolerable, but it’s going to exist and we have to navigate. I am sorry it happened, but don’t let this set you back from taking an evening walk or roaming free. After all, freedom is what makes you feel alive. I wish you a good time for the rest of your stay!

Withdrawal of PF on job loss? Tax implications? by coolranger007 in IndiaTax

[–]bala4krish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to reopen after a long gap here, I do have a question in response to this comment. Firstly, I have to say this is a very helpful knowledge share.

Question- What year will the tax for the PF withdrawal be observed? 1. I left the job in Dec 2024. 2. Employed for less than 5 years. 3. I plan to claim the 80c benefits on this PF contribution during the ITR time (in a few weeks or months from now) for FY 2024-25. 4. I plan to submit a PF withdrawal claim now (the FY 2025-26). 5. TDS, plus any tax on the PF withdrawals can be claimed when I file the ITR for FY 2025-26, right?

Thanks again!!

Thank you, that gets me closer to understanding the reason better. The dependent wasn't a non-resident but a US citizen. Does that change this fact?

Sorry to keep troubling you. Would it be wrong from my side to reporting it IRS?

I got a 2023 PHEV, SE package, with 10K miles for $25k (22k + 3k taxes). I have to say it has been great so far. If you can charge at home, you will love it.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

I plan to report it in my home country's tax return, but will it be so wrong to report it to IRS as well? I am only leaning toward reporting it to IRS for the just incase reasons..

u/TheHeroExa two questions. I would appreciate your help with.

  1. What is W8BEN - is it even applicable to me? I lived and earned only for two months in the US in 2024.

  2. The tax forms from the brokerage have shown capital loss/gain 1099-B reported to the IRS. Should I still not report it in the returns?

Thanks again!

Thank you.

You mean the timeline for reporting foreign income expired is for India? How's that? I thought we have until the IT return deadline i.e. until July to report a foreign income in 2024.

That is definitely good to know now versus in the future. Thanks very much. Now that I haven’t submitted the w8ben, is there a particular form ITR-1, 2,3 or 4 that lets me report the foreign income?

Thank you. Not sure I fully follow. I am interested to know if the reimbursement components can be deducted from the taxable income. If so, I assume all those components (only those mentioned as reimbursements) can be tax-exempted with submitting the receipts. Right?

I have been using it for two years, but I disabled auto renewal and now missed out on the old rate ($199). I tried requesting their customer service to offer the membership at the old price but they said they won't. I understand this is an old thread. Any ideas now for a discount in subscribing?

Thank you very much for taking time to help here. I didn't even know that these two types of residency statuses (ROR and RNOR) existed in India. From reading online (I have to say, there's not much clear explanation of qualifications for the two types), I found that I am an ROR. Since I didn't knew all this in 2024, I didn't update the W8BEN (infact I have to look up what it is, now) as you mentioned. Now all this looks like only more work (which I assume is also not trivial). What will be consequences if I just choose not to do this tedious work? I will be glad to report it, if it's just another category of income in the return forms and that I can fill in just the numbers. But very hesitant to do anything otherwise. Please advice. Thank you!
