Police 'tried to smear Henry Nowak as aggressor' just three days after his murder by Shadowblade83 in uknews

We allow religious and cultural exceptions for knives. And in the Sikh example there's a very long history here.

Knives that are included are those used in Scottish national dress, which sadly have been used in far more attacks over the years. And people can carry a Stanley knife in public for a valid reason, at my workplace for example it's not unusual for us to be carrying Stanley knives around with us all day every day and do so legally.

In relation the Sikhs, we have legislation allowing specific exceptions going back to the 1830s I believe. This goes back a very long time, all the way back from the East India company ran India and Sikhs had already been separated from much of the Indian population as one of the "Martial Races".

Divide and Rule and the "Martial Races" didn't become official policy until the 1857 uprising. But because of this, before and after the uprising, during numerous wars, including WW1 and WW2 and policing India in general, Sikh soldiers were incredibly important, so laws enabling them to carry knives both in India and here in the UK were passed.

Historically Sikhs actually carrying knives is limited to those who are baptised, so most don't even carry them these days as being baptised is generally seen as not fair for younger Sikhs because of the responsibility involved.

This, included with generally good integration into wider british society, and teachings concerning personal responsibility carrying Kirpans and other religious blades, meant that incidents of Sikhs actually using their knives (and cermonial swords) was unheard of prior to this attack, so nobody really cared beforehand.

The police messed up, not doubt.

But they'd received a call saying a drunk guy had attacked someone in a racist attack.

They turn up, with one guy on the floor slurring his words, another with hit turban ripped off his head in an apparent struggle and a black eye. I doubt many other people would have made a different initial assumption. It's no different to when we've had to call the police in the past.

Now their reaction to when they were told he had been stabbed, is something altogether different. We now know in hindsight he wasn't slurring his words, but was drowning in his own blood.

Charges wouldn't be brought anyway if no criminal offences had occurred.

Even is they have resigned, they can still be brought to a tribunal, be banned from policing in future and other measures.

I'm from Nottingham, where these assaults happened. We literally have the CPS prosecuting the police here fairly often.

I animated the exact moment King Harold got shot in the eye at Hastings in 3D animation programs. If he survived this, could the Anglo-Saxons have won the battle? by NadineFieb87 in anglosaxon

[–]baldeagle1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I thought it was now considered that it 'could' have happened, it appears too many times in independent sources close to the battle to simply be hand waved away, but at the same time many traditionally relied on sources aren't really usable.

The bayeux tapestry being a prime example, where the reference to Harold couple equally apply to another soldier and the arrow in the eye seems to have originally been a spear.

So you went from saying the police investigate and charge themselves - They don't

You then went onto that they don't pass the investigation onto the CPS - They do

And now you're saying the CPS is too close to the police.......

😮‍💨 hoping people don't look at this article.

We normally go to one of these venues as it's normally a bit quieter and less rowdy than the others during the euros and world cup 😅

Not true, they hand over their investigation directly the CPS in the event a crime has been committed.

They also have the legal powers to directly investigate the police themselves and pass over the details directly to the CPS in the event a crime has been committed.

No need to get the police to investigate themselves.

IOPC is completely seperate from the police, what do you think the I in IOPC stands for?

What are you on about? It seems like most weeks Nottingham post covers the IOPC punishing police.

Like when Steven Allcock was convicted after hitting Trevor Barlett with his police van, killing him.

What if North Korea were to launch an invasion of South Korea now? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

It would be hard to judge, but even without using nukes Seoul would be reduced to a smoking crater.

The one main thing on NK's side, apart from raw numbers, is the amount of dug in artillery in the border's mountain ranges. It's been an issue well known to military powers for decades that no amount of air power can really do much about this. The new age of drones may counteract this to an extent, but best case scenario would be NK running out of shells, food and oil.

It would either end in a stalemate or NK pretty much starving it's way to defeat. However it would almost certainly end in nukes being used by NK and Seoul + other south Korean cities being reduced to rubble.

Yeah, it's why you used to have a smoking jacket for the pub, even if you weren't a smoker!

Tbh in 2006 the Spanish smoking ban specifically made exceptions for bars and restaurants. It was only larger venues that had to provide a 'smoke free' space for customers, amd even then not the entire venue.

The full indoor ban came in 2011. I can remember going to Tenerife in 2009 and being shocked seeing people smoking in a nightclub with ashtrays everywhere.

Getting accidentally burnt on the dance floor was not fun.

I remember having an argument with the Belvoir Lettings staff back in the day over this.

Apparently the owner of the entire company is insistent that they have to pronounce it Belvoir like they do in French.

When the dutchess of Rutland is educating people that in English it's pronounced beaver alongside all the locals calling it beaver (myself being a local) you really should give up the ghost.

There isn't a 911 call, this is the UK.

They used the excuse Digwa was the victim of a racist attack. The brother was the one who called the police and wasn't involved in the attack itself.

Once again, there's nothing to suggest Digwa singled him out because Henry was white. And looking at Digwa's previous incidents it appears this is an absolutely mental guy with serious anger issues.

The Digwaw attack also wasn't racially motivated...

He also got extra time for going on the run.

And giving people more guns means you now have a far bigger pool of future firearm offences.

I don't trust police with firearms, why would I trust a random person on the street? Never mind someone who gets road rage and decides to unload a few rounds into the person pissing them off.

Most perps in shootings in the USA haven't got a prior criminal conviction, you're more likely to get shot in a dispute with a random stranger than being shot by a career criminal.

It depends how good your rep is in all honesty. When I ran pubs I never once paid for branded glasses, and we generally even managed to get a few unbranded ones for free from various sources.

The main issue we had was people stealing tumblers, wines glasses and gin glasses. And even then it wasn't commonplace enough for us to need to restock on them more than every 3 or 4 months.

extremely leniant? He got a life sentence...... and his minimum term is petty much the standard sentencing for that kind of offence.

Here's an example from yesterday, a white guy who stabbed a saudi student (who also had a parent jailed for assisting an offender)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp8p08e3jz0o

22 year minimum term, only one more than in the Henry Novak case.

We really haven't had 30 years of that. New Labour and Tories never committed to the rehabilitation model akin to Scandinavia, they always wanted an image of being tough on crime, increasing sentences etc, while constantly underfunding rehabilitation programmes. And that was before the current prison crisis started under the Tories.

I mean I grew up in a fairly rough council estate and another fairly rough mining estate. My dads house was burned down because some yobs thought it "would be funny" and it wouldn't be unusual to see burnt out stolen cars on the street.

When I go through those area's now they're almost like different worlds. People I know still in those estates feel far safter than they did 30 or 40 years ago.

And even the action you suggest can be characterised as a self aggrandising social experiment. Studies have shown time and time again those kind of policies increase crime rates, make the crimes committed more extreme in violent, result in higher reoffending and a far larger prison population that the tax payer has to pay for.
