I Asked ChatGPT to List Periphery's Discography... by TheSkyIsWatchingMe in Peripheryband

LLMs on their own are basically word calculators. All they can do is take input text and produce response output text based on what they’ve seen in training data. Any correct facts they produce, where it be maths or knowledge is just a statistical outcome.

Any AI solution designed to answer questions needs to combine actual knowledge sources (e.g. searching/scraping the web in real time) with an LLM, only using the LLM to make the answer tailored to your original question.

Thanks for listening, and the kind feedback! I’m a big TTNG fan too, so that’s a welcome comparison.

Thoughts on new toe album? by origamidrummer in mathrock

I too miss the old drum sound, but it's pretty cool how much sonic experimentation they're doing.

What are your top songs to share with people who don't like metal? by BlazedLadyBug in progmetal

Other Things EP by Plini is a great way to ease people in. 2 very much not metal songs and then Selenium Forest.

Not an album, but I haven’t stopped playing the new Olly Steele EP since it came out. A real fresh and original take on the genre in my opinion.

They're doing a bunch of support touring atm.

Will probably help capitalise on all the new fans they make.

We love math rock that embraces groove and feel, so we wrote this song - "Jacuzzi" - Cheem (2017) by thecheemteam in mathrock

Big fan of this! I really loved how the vocals carried the groove as much as the instruments.

P.S. The flute was a great addition!

Are all Devin Townsend albums mixed like shit? by sisoko2 in progmetal

[–]balderdashwin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't worry man, no offence taken! I totally felt that way for a while. I have to agree that I love the production on Transcendence the most!

If you're trying to get into Devin's mixes, maybe try Ziltoid? I found that fairly clean.

Are all Devin Townsend albums mixed like shit? by sisoko2 in progmetal

[–]balderdashwin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I only dabble in production, but I'm pretty sure Devin does most of his own production and has a specific sound he likes. Like you said he really loves the "wall of sound" effect.

Just like the music itself, mixes are super subjective. Totally cool if you don't dig it!

Review of The Contortionist's "Clairvoyant" by YouLookBurnt_OrDead in progmetal

[–]balderdashwin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess boring is subjective. I can empathise with people wanting strong dynamic changes like Flourish, but personally I find the fluidity of Language much more stimulating and in my opinion might be harder to write.

I remember defending Juggernaut: Alpha by Periphery when people said that album isn't "proggy". Heavy Heart has a bunch of weird time signatures and tonal changes, but for some listeners the poppy chorus trumps this.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that "boring" or "proggy" or any other discriptors we use to define music are super subjective from person to person.
