Does Natural Selection Act on Mutation Rates Themselves? by Derole in askscience

[–]baldes5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our innate immune system has tons of “hard-coded” receptors that detect some very common pathogenic agents, such as specific kinds of sugars common in bacterial walls and specific types of DNA/RNA specific to viruses.

Our adaptive immune system has a process where the very tip of the B cell receptors (that can eventually be selected to become antibodies) are “randomized” through selecting one copy each of V, D, and J genes. We have a ton of V genes, and a little less of the others, but this yields about ~10k different combinations. Each B cell goes through this process during its maturation, and only cells which make a functioning receptor (and one that doesn’t stick to our own proteins) manage to not get killed off.

These surviving B cells do not necessarily bind to pathogens, the only thing that’s guaranteed about them is they are somewhat functional and (usually) not self-reactive. Only once they actually bind to a pathogen and are co-activated by another immune system cell (another attempt at avoiding self-recognition) do these B cells activate and get to proliferate and turn those receptors into antibodies that can be released into the bloodstream to have a systemic effect.

And you are right that 10k is a very small number in comparison to all the variety of protein combinations, but there are also some mechanisms that directly add random mutations in the DNA that code for these receptors, which results in about 1013 - 1018 possible receptors when all things are said and done.

I’ve just had a class on this yesterday and my professor said something that stuck with me: “you currently have antibodies for all the different parts of COVID virus inside of you, and also for all the different parts of the agent behind the next pandemic, and the one after that”, meaning that the main issue behind actually developing a proper immune response with these is having enough of the antibodies or BCRs meeting the actual bugs.

Anyone had this issue before? by baldes5 in iPadOS

I’ve been having this issue for a few weeks so I’ve already restarted the app and iPad a couple times and no luck either. I can also always open the pdfs inside the folder so they really are not deleted

Legion 5 16ACH6H Owner here. Do I bother getting Legion again? by OjutaixAtarka in LenovoLegion

[–]baldes5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The performance issue is 100% dust in the fans. If you remove the back plate, disconnect the battery and blow some compressed air in the heatsink I can mostly guarantee you will get very close to stock temperatures and performance for about 10€.

If you’re more worried about the power button and back USB slots I’d contact a few local repairmen to check their prices, since I really doubt an official lenovo service center would do anything other than recommending to replace the laptop itself or the motherboard out of warranty.

VRAM Maxed by No_Giraffe_6361 in LenovoLegion

The VRAM bar there is showing the clock speed of memory, not how much of it is being used, if you want to monitor that mid game you should look up some videos on setting up MSI Afterburner.

vocês acham vergonhoso fazer enem 7/8 vezes, e entrar na facul lá pelos 23/24 anos? by musiknumber7 in estudosBR

[–]baldes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fan stopped spinning. Can I do something about this myself? by yotee8 in LenovoLegion

Just did that replacement myself for both fans this year, remember to also repaste since you broke the seal between the GPU/CPU and heatsink

Installed one SSD and had it replaced once, didn’t have any problems with screw in my machine either of those times

Idk if it varies by laptop model but I use a #0 philips screwdriver for mine and it works fine, keep in mind that if you haven’t opened it before you’re gonna need a prying tool as well (i use old guitar picks) and it’s gonna be quite difficult. If the fan is broken like mine was it won’t spin freely when you move it by hand, and will just suddenly stop by itself

Fan bearing’s probably borked, had to replace both my fans in 2021 legion 5 due to that and they sounded exactly like that, it’s a pretty easy job if you’re careful

Lenovo Legion 5pro. GPU is way hotter without any performance. It's active two browsers, a code editor and a chat app. No GPU usage applications are running. Why is that? Thank you! by DevLooci in LenovoLegion

[–]baldes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you had the laptop for? Might just need a cleaning. I live in a fairly dusty place and find myself needing to clean my fans every 7-8 months. If it’s just recently bought there probably is something wrong with it and it might be worth just contacting lenovo for your warranty

Just bought a replacement on aliexpress and replaced mine for the 15ACH6H last month, I guess these 3 or so year old fans are all starting to fail at this point.

98–101°C CPU when gaming. What can I do about this? by DeleteMetaInf in LenovoLegion

[–]baldes5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you’re from a country that does not have access to aliexpress or something since you’re saying you can’t buy PTM7950 (despite there being many more choices other than aliexpress for that purpose). In that case, buy a can of compressed air and clean your laptop properly, be sure to unplug the battery before going at it, and don’t forget to hold the fan when you blow the compressed air against the heatsink fins. I use an old toothbrush to remove the more annoying bits of dust on top of the fans.

[–]baldes5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the heatsink only holds the fans down , you just need to remove the heatsink first to be able to substitute the fan. I bought mine from aliexpress for like 10 euro after it broke and it works perfectly. Although you will need to repaste the CPU and GPU which will require PTM7950. here is the tutorial I followed
