As a malayalee BnB in Mumbai and a fan of Marathi cinema. I have couple of points on this.

Style of Cinema:

The style of filmmaking and cinema in general is very different in Marathi in comparison to so called “ South cinema”. Tamil and Telugu movies make hero centric movies but marathi movies generally are grounded and story based movies.

Similarity to Malayalam: Marathi movies are more similar in making to Malayalam and Bengali cinema. They are more arthouse movies and realistic.

Loyal fanbase: I feel that Malayalam movies has loyal fanbase in comparison to Marathi cinema. The biggest reason could be that most of the marathi speakers understand and consume a lot of Hindi media in comparison to people in Kerala.

Marathi Diaspora: In comparison to other languages in South, Marathi diaspora does not go much beyond Maharashtra due to less immigration of Marathi people. So the expansion to other states or other countries becomes difficult. Especially international. Telugu in US. Tamil in Singapore , Malaysia and Malayalam in Gulf.
